Well as we transition from winter to summer, I think this probably warrants a post. Some devastating bush fires on Saturday evening in northwest England. It's like something you would expect to see in Australia or Greece during their summer. I'm now hearing that a cigarette butt may have caused this inferno below near Liverpool! An entire nature reserve lost and 800 people evacuated from their homes. How the actual hell does a 'wetland' catch on fire in March!? This is crazy... The scale of the damage on Sunday morning As if that isn't enough, another fire was absolutely raging i…

8-10 miles from shore in West Palm Beach
by SuburbanGuy- 16 replies

I'm moving from northern Illinois to West Palm Beach next week. I've been looking at every climate zone and hardiness zone map that I can find. As most know, those maps are only a general guideline of what can be grown in any specific area. The maps have been updated, showing a slight warming trend. Some areas of South Florida that were Zone 9A are now shown to be Zone 10. The more recent USDA hardiness zone map have done away with the a/b divisions, which most knowledgeable people feel is a big mistake. Things that can grow at the upper end of Zone 9 do not grow well at the lower end of Zone 9. I also know these maps cannot take into account the microclimat…

Florida Winter 1 2
by gsytch- 42 replies

We have had quite a bit of warmth lately. After a chilly rainfall and 50's on Monday, and a chilly 44F at my house Tues morning - the coldest yet - it warmed to near 80F since then, with near 80-F to the low 80's expected thru Thursday. The week before was very similar except the one night chill was barely 50F. Sunny, breezy, not much rain since Halloween. The warmer it stays the more nervous I get. I have not even covered my one shadehouse with plastic yet. Too warm. It is ready to go up and on in an hour though, just in case! I love it but I do not want all this luscious growth to get zapped! Cold Protection Help
by NBTX11- 37 replies
- 4.2k views
Well, we started out with a low of 27 tonight. Now, weather underground is saying 23-24, which means it could get as low as 20F. Weather.com still says 27, so who knows, maybe it won't get that cold. I wasn't worried until they kept revising the temps, now I am worried about the attached queen palm. Last year it got down to around 23F and it burned about 40-50%, but recovered in spring fairly fast. It is now very established and strong despite how young it is, so I doubt 23-24 will harm it at all, but I am worried about the what if temp of 20. Palm is about 8 ft tall or so. Would you protect this palm, if so how. All my other stuff is hardy and doesn't nee…

Long and Lat 1 2
by wendisplantation- 61 replies

Hello all! I have a question re long and lat. Is it reasonable to expect that if I have a friend that is the same basic distance from prime meridian and equator, but opposite (me in the Northern hem and they in the southern) , that we could grow similar things, altitude being similar as well? I realize there is a lot more to it than just that, but I am curious if one could use long and lat to judge whether or not to TRY a particular species. There are so many plams that I want to try, but I have to pick and choose wisely because my makeshift greenhouse is fills up fast when 'winter' is coming.... Thanks ???

Tropical Cyclone Dorian 1 2 3
by palmsOrl- 89 replies
- 4.2k views
Okay, so it appears that Tropical Storm Dorian will pose a significant threat to peninsular Florida this weekend, Labor Day Weekend. Currently, the storm is forecast to make landfall on the coast of East Central Florida. This is, of course, subject to change, but track forecasts have improved dramatically in recent years. What is more uncertain is the strength of Dorian. While previously believed that the tropical cyclone would pass directly over Hispaniola, the computer model consensus now has Dorian passing between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico or directly over Puerto Rico. This would cause far less disruption to the storm's circulation and would leave the storm m…

Members, Just saw on the news that Hawaii may be hit by a CAT 4 hurricane in the next 5 days or so. I thought that hurricanes never hit Hawaii. To all our palm loving friends over there stay vigilant and don't take any storm lightly whatever the past history. We here in Miami have way too much experience so DO NOT let your guards down. Manny

"I AM NOT TRYING TO HYPE THINGS BUT THE COLD AIR MASS COMING DOWN THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER WILL BE THE COLDEST FOR MANY EVEN INTO THE DEEP SOUTH SINCE THE LATE 80'S. I AM TRYING TO GET THAT POINT ACROSS SO PEOPLE CAN PREPARE FOR JUST HOW COLD IT WILL BE. "

July in California 1 2
by PalmGuyWC- 46 replies

Somebody has to start the Calif. July thread, so hear it is. June in N. Calif. was well below normal in temps. (at least 10 degrees or more) until the very end, then last weekend we had a sizzler with highs around 106 to 109. Temps. have returned to "normal" with nightly lows in the high 50's to low 60's and daytime highs in the upper 80's. I expect there will be more heat waves ahead as July through Sept are our warmest months. Dick

Well, it’s time for a new thread. Calendar spring is here now and it also appears that the real spring is too. Yesterday on Sep 1 we had a 24C day then some small rumblings and a thunderstorm which dropped about 5mm of rain. We are now at the point in time where the weather is gradually on the improve and the weeds are growing like mental. Hopefully a great growing season awaits and the palms flourish.

Why so cold? 1 2
by gsytch- 45 replies

Perhaps someone can shed some light. I've been here long enough to see quick cold snaps, but this year has me confused. There is little snow cover up north, and the land is relatively warm. The Gulf is warmish and yet tonight I am not getting any influence. The AO is not negative, yet this looks as cold as anything we had last year. I knew this arctic air was sitting in Alaska weeks ago, and I always worry when it gets that cold there...but how did this dip occur? It looked cold last week, but not this! I never went above 47F this afternoon and the wind was awful. Anyone chime in? How did this happen? Thanks!

The Ice Age Cometh 1 2
by Ed in Houston- 54 replies

Scientists warn the sun will 'go to sleep' in 2030 and could cause temperatures to plummet "A new study claims to have cracked predicting solar cycles - and says that between 2020 and 2030 solar cycles will cancel each other out." "This, they say, will lead to a phenomenon known as the 'Maunder minimum' - which has previously been known as a mini ice age when it hit between 1646 and 1715, even causing London's River Thames to freeze over. " "During Cycle 26, which covers the decade from 2030-2040, the two waves will become exactly out of synch and this will cause a significant reduction in solar activity." "'Over the cycle, the waves fluctuate between the northe…

Tampa, St. Petersburg, FL weather archives 1 2
by surgeon83- 46 replies

Hello, I am hoping someone can guide me to a source of free weather archives specifically for the Tampa / St. Petersburg, Florida areas. I have the monthly average temperatures and record highs and lows from weather.com, but I was hoping for an archive of daily temperatures dating back to about 1948 (which I think would be the earliest for St. Pete). I have data like this for Galveston, and it is really great to have. Thanks in advance for your help. -Brian

California: Are We Next? 1 2
by happ- 68 replies

There are strong indicators of a major pattern shift starting in about a week. The good news is that significant rainfall may occur. The bad news is that it could be accompanied by an arctic airmass. A combination similar to what has happened in Florida & the South. I am not a weather drama queen waiting for something interesting to finally happen & this "heads up" could easily not pan out either. But who knows? Here are excerpts of discussions among AMS_LA chapter meteorologists [also take a look of Kevin Martin's UJEAS model - the impression is that something wet is about to happen & maybe something "cold" "The strong El Niño (similar to 1992) th…
