Planting time again this time my polyandrococos caudescens growing in a 200mm container the amendments to the soil has been done the usual irrigation treatment and placed in prime viewing position in the garden another 5 years and some loving gardening techniques should see the garden looking a little bit better with the silver underside of the leaves combined with the visual pattern on the new spear will certainly make for a conversation piece

The Azores

Can a Coconut Palm survive and or flourish in the Azores?I have started a collaboration with Michael Ferreira (Palm Guy) of Bermuda to answer this question.Palm Guy has recently posted an incredible group of photographs in the Travel Log section of this Board showing numerous Tropical specimens. We have identified Ponta Delgado,Azores as a likely candidate for this endeavor. The Azores is a group of Islands ranging from latitude of 37 to 39 degrees North.Ponta Delgado is located at 37.7 North. If established, this would constitute the furthest Coconut Palm on Earth from the Equator. Several major factors give reason for optimism. The first is the Azores location in thos…

Clinostigma question
by Kaname-kun- 2 replies
I planted this Clinostigma samoense one or two years ago that had this to me strange appearance at the base. I assume it had been potted too long in too small a pot at the nursery? Anyway, there is a smaller trunk beneath a larger trunk. It's hard to see in the photo, but some adventitious roots are beginning to emerge at ground level. It is very healthy and has grown considerably since planting in the ground. Is it OK as is, or should I heap more soil up to the new larger trunk? I have other Clinostigmas I have grown from seedlings and planted out when they hit five feet or so, and none of them show this feature.

The first time I saw it I thought it was a phoenix. But when I looked closer, it appeared that I wasn't sure. It was found that the branches did not have sharp thorns like the phoenix pusilla. So I'm not sure what kind of palm it is. If anyone knows about the problem, please specify. Thank you.

What do I do now?
by Than- 5 replies

I planted these seeds of various species few weeks back. I put the plastic cups in bleach and the medium in the oven as always.. yet now some of them are covered in these white fungi. I tried a fungicide but didn't do anything. The cups have been covered with plastic film and have been placed on heat mats. Are the seeds damaged? Should I remove, sterilize and repot in new medium? If a seed sprouted, would these fungi damage the seedling?

Help ID This Coconut Pest
by agroventuresperu- 3 replies

Some sort of scale? They are on the undersides of the leaves, and looks like they excrete a black substance that ends up on top of the leaves. Lots of ants, so it appears there's some sort of mutually-beneficial relationship going on. Any organic solutions? It's the only coconut on the whole property I've ever seen with this problem. The coconut is probably the fastest-growing specimen we've ever had. It's in a spot that has access to more fertility. Lots of compost and sawdust has been placed around it during the past couple years. It's also received the same additional inputs as all the other coconuts this past year: ulexite, dolomite, gypsum, and potassi…

I struggled a bit to get my first Bizzy to sprout and only 1 did from this batch which I think was my second or third try. The first pic was taken April 3rd and the second was taken today October 3rd 2021. 6 months of growth from when the first leaf broke the surface give or take a day or two. Maybe a minor achievement to many but I’m kind of proud of this little palm lol. After maybe 3 months of trying it finally worked, Next milestone will be a palmate frond hopefully soon!

C. onilahensis--keep or remove offset?
by Foggy Paul- 1 follower

Hi all. Our C. onilahensis has been in the ground about three years now. It was very slow but is starting to pick up, probably helped by the past two good rain winters. We planted out two, a five and a one gallon if I recall correctly. The five gallon has always been bigger of course, but the one gallon is catching up. My question is about the five gallon. It has four offsets, the smallest of which doesn't seem to be oriented very well in relation to the other three. Would you let it develop or remove it? The one gallon plant has three very solid looking offsets. TIA for all suggestions. The plant overall: The offset in question: Another view: …

Hello! I’m located in Mexico City, which has a mild weather with ultra rainy summers, definitely NOT a cocos nucifera territory. But turns out I was just driving by and ran into the weirdest palm, it looked big, thriving and certainly similar to a COCOS NUCIFERA and i just couldn’t believe my eyes because it was big. I made a small investigation and turns out that palm tree has been there for a long time, since 2016! It was a small baby and it’s been growing ever since, now in 2020 it really got bigger but there’s no street view imagery, i promise I’ll bring current pictures, but here’s some detailed views of the palm tree and how it’s evolved throughout the years, is …

ovobontsira
by mike in kurtistown- 2 replies

This post is a response to a question I received on Facebook, and I am responding in PalmTalk because of the facilities for a more lengthy response. It involves growing a species of Dypsis (now Chrysalidocarpus) identified as ovobontsira in offerings from RPS that I sowed in June 2009 and in September 2013. The only seedling survivor of the 09 seed batch was planted on March 2019 and has grown well. This is what it looks like today (lawn chair for scale): I found another seedling in a seedpot that contained very different palms, obviously misplaced. Looking at my records, I saw that I was raising "orange crush" (now Chrysiladocarpus paucifolius) which the…
