Hey, all, I had a friend of mine who’s been on Palm talk occasionally over the years send me this picture. He’s in the coastal San Diego area, and I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Unfortunately, I’m getting accustomed to the damage that South American palm weevils can cause, as well as other diseases and such. But this one’s new to me. Any thoughts?

Grabbed these two at our annual rare palm auction. Always a risk of pollen contamination of course but they were created by an experienced hybridiser and are possibly showing a little hybrid vigour. Will be fun to watch them progess.

Living in the Azores since 2015 after spending most of my adult life in New England, I've had a chance to explore most of S. Miguel island as a hiking guide. I've also started growing several palms in at quinta minuvida orchard lodge, our business. Most of them are looking pretty good by now. Posting here some images of my palm garden, the neighborhood and the island. I've found that pretty much everything grows since the climate is even, with high humidity and rain. I don't fertilize or water any of my palms or fruit trees. Please feel free to ask questions. The Roystonea on the forefront has been on the ground about three years now from 1 gallon con…

I think it's already safe to say that winter is over. This is my coconut after the multiple cold snaps we had this year in the region. Lost 3 fronds and I just cut them today the spear is green and moving faster everyday. This one is an orange panama tall. How are your coconuts fairing?

What are these?

Can anybody tell me what these spikes are growing out of our palm trees. They eventually open out into white fluffy looking balls then drop all over our garden. I asked a gardener to remove them as when they open they attract wasps and I'm allergic to wasp sting. The garden dr told me that they could not cut them out until they opened as they would just grow more of these spikes. I live near Alicante Spain

A day at the Huntington

It had been 30 years since my last visit to this very special place . My friends and fellow gardeners / palm people invited us to go. We made plans and went down on a Friday , unfortunately during a heat wave . There is plenty of shade there but I didn’t pause for any photos outdoors , just in the glass house . The palm garden is very well stocked with mature specimens and we spent a lot of time touring various gardens , all well marked with nice pathways and easy access to. It is such a large place it would take multiple visits to see it all. I did pause to take some pics inside the glass house . Harry This one is for @happypalms I’ve tried growing these outdoo…

Hello everyone! First of all this is my first time here and wanted to greet everyone, secondly I am just an amateur that started as simply a curious person for palms overall and more specifically coconuts! I have been on Madeira (have a house there and go there 2 or 3 times per year) this summer and took a few pictures of the coconuts located in the marine of Funchal. When I was searching for coconuts one year ago I discovered on this forum that Madeira had some just in front of my nose! It is my belief that this is one if not the northern most region where they survive without extra man care with just the natural conditions (I believe at most maybe watering, don'…

Some nice plantable sized dypsis saintlucei
by happypalms- 6 replies

Some nice 140mm container saintlucei. They will be ready by spring to go in the ground. Not sure if a group planting will suit them or plant them in a row along the driveway. Time will work it out in my little landscaping brain. Either way they grow to perfection in my climate.

Weed barrier nightmare need help!
by Austyyp- 0 replies

Hello, I’m new to posting here but from what I read this is the best place for my questions. I am currently seeing nutritional issues with my palms in my front yard and back yard and is being caused by a 9mil thick heavy plastic weed barrier laid underneath the Decomposed granite that makes up are landscape beds. The roots of all plants have either grown right directly under the plastic searching for oxygen or on top of the plastic underneath the dg which then causes stability issues with many of the plants. All because the previous owner of this house being a local landscaper for whatever reason not thinking long term laid down what looks like a super heavy duty black an…

Palm trunk shrooms - Harmful or Harmless?
by TropicsEnjoyer- 5 replies

So literally like 30 mins ago I was doing a bit of my daily garden inspection and I noticed these white mushrooms growing near the base of my sylvester palm trunk. I know sylvester’s are like ticking time bombs but I love them so i’m just wondering if this is anything to worry about or not. And below is a fuller view of the spot, it’s kinda a covered spot bc I have a mounted staghorn leaning on the trunk.

Hi, I live in Southern California. I have King and Queen palm trees which have sooty mold on the lower fronds. They are too tall to spray. Is there a systemic fungicide that can be applied to the roots? I welcome other suggestions too. Many thanks.

Let's see everyone's Sabal "Lisa"s
by Chester B- 15 replies

I have 6 of these Sabal "Lisa" and after they lingered in a slow state of growth in Oregon. I planted the first one almost a year ago here in Houston. I know people say they are slow but I am not really finding that, I guess they really love the climate here. I got 8 fronds in last years growing season and it's almost pushed its second large frond this year and its at least 4 foot overall height. The spear in the initial photo is the small frond you see on the lower right in the second photo. It laughed at our cold this winter so I ended up planting three more. And yes they originally came from @PalmatierMeg. Before and after photos and I am looking forward to seei…

I recently had a chance to quickly swing by the University of Melbourne where they have a nice palm collection by Melbourne standards largely thanks to a collector and former palmtalker. Hope you enjoy some of these: Trachycarpus fortunei var wagnerianus Trachycarpus martianus (L) and Arenga ‘micrantha’ (R) Becarriophoenix alfredii Livistona decora Trachycarpus martianus Arenga ‘micrantha’ Ceroxylon ventricosum Another Ceroxylon ventricosum. There’s a group of 3 here. Hopefully a seed production factory one day in the distant future. …

And this weeks ocd plant purchase is…..

A nice little batch for the garden starting with, licuala corneri, licuala PNG dwarf, dypsis “CLBS”,Zamia standelyi, anthurium palenquense a rare one, and a anthurium lineolatum that should do until the next fix of growing goodies. And with winter underway it’s time to get the cool tender ones and some of the new ones in a protected environment. There will be some losers but it’s the winners iam more intrested in being a zone pusher , I will find some new cool tolerant plants that one wouldnt have thought about purchasing.

A nice batch of some Bismarckia nobilis
by happypalms- 0 replies

Growing a few Bismarcks for the cold climate land owners. One question I do asked often is what have you got that will take the cold and a lot of sun. Well that answer is the Bismarck palm. Easy to grow and germinate if you have patience. Although a learning curve to work out how to pot them up as seedlings once germinated. Usually a deep community pot in the hothouse with the container inside a plastic bag no bottom heating just left on there own to pop up.

On the potting bench joeys, chamearops humillis
by happypalms- 0 replies

A few more joeys potted up while I had the chance. And some chamearops humillis for a bit of cold tolerance too fill that gap in the market for those who get really cold weather. I don’t mind potting up the tough varieties in the cool weather, I certainly won’t be potting up any tropicals that’s for sure.

The forgotten Australian linospadix monostachya
by happypalms- 12 replies

A fantastic Australian palm that deserves more attention in the garden. Cool tolerant shade loving understory palm, that’s easy to grow. Even i have missed the boat in these ones in the garden with only one mature specimen. Sidetracked by other more tropical exotics from overseas. I do know one thing they look fantastic in a grove in the rainforests. So it might be time I got the shovel out and planted a few dozen in a group. A palm that is native to my area 20 minutes drive away, seeds by the thousands if I want them. Yet a little rare in some country’s, I might have to get a few seeds out there to a few growers I think!

A couple of the specimens of (Butia odorata X Jubaea chilensis) X Syagrus romanzoffiana here at Leu Gardens have started flowering recently. I got a couple photos yesterday in the rainstorm. These were acquired from Tim Hopper in 2010. This one was planted out in April 2012 from a 3gal. pot. I have heard the name X Jubutyagrus everettii applied to this hybrid but I don't thing it has ever been formally described.

Arenga question

Hey all, I was wandering around my neighbors yard and noticed this Arenga. Forgive the picture; it’s in a difficult place and the lighting wasn’t great. But it’s a spectacular palm, with fronds pushing 20’ in length. I’m sure it was originally from Floribunda, so it’s probably a less common one. I know there’s a lot of this genus that are pretty tropical in their needs, but this one seems as happy as a clam. Any thoughts as to the species?
