Chrysalidocarpus hybrids
by Josue Diaz- 7 replies

Got my grubby hands on these two hybrids from Floribunda. Anyone else trying them? Or growing them already? This first one is a prestoniana hybrid of unknown pollen parent. And these are the decipiens F2 hybrids. Jeff says these are from a clustering, smaller palm and that it is fast growing. Lastly, one of my decipiens nearby looking good with a new spear not far from opening

This is one of my little Roystonea's leaves. It only have 4-5 leaves, it is about 4 ft tall, outside in the ground and has seen 28F already, with protection. It is not the newest leaf. I noticed these brown areas recently, is it smth to worry about? The newest leaf looks fine.

I will devote separate topics to damage suffered in our gardens from Hurricane Ian on 9/28/22. Some parts of our yard did surprisingly well, all things considered. What is no surprise is that palms that evolved to survive long term in parts of the world that get violent tropical storms . Those palms include the Sabals, Copernicia, Coccothrinax, Thrinax, Leucothrinax, Hemithrinax, Serenoa, Roystonea and Pseudophoenix. They may take terrible damage but in most cases live to grow again. My Caribbean Garden contains most of those genera as well as interlopers like Kerriodoxa, Hyophorbe and Pritchardia. Caribbean natives sacrifice their leaves and resist falling or even leanin…

Dypsis Decipiens Hybrids 1 2 3

There have been a couple posts regarding Dypsis decipiens hybrids recently. I thought it might be a good idea to create a thread where we could track and compare over time. So @iDesign, @ExperimentalGrower, @Hilo Jason, @Josh-O and anyone else who either know or suspect they may have a DD hybrid, let’s see them & track them here. I have at least two that I recently acquired that undoubtedly are hybrids. Observant palmtalkers and quite frankly my better judgement brought this to my attention. These were brought in to the Ventura Green Thumb nursery by (I’m told) a former manager who is a long time palm collector himself. These were labeled as Dypsis decipiens. To …

Indian Summer

It’s that time of year here in Southern California . Temperatures in the upper 70’s and mid 80’s f. and lows in the low 60’s. We have had quite the week with a follow-up to our incredible wet November and December / early January. The garden , once again thinks it is Spring or Summer. The wonderful weather has a price …..very dry winds . That means MORE TIME IN THE GARDEN!😎. I was out picking up debris once again and took a few pics. All you SoCal folks can join in , I know you’re out there in you gardens , watering , fussing about . Even those of you not in our area , I can sense the gardening bug doesn’t just have me in its grip. Harry ‘The Pritchardia has opened …

Caryota Urens warning!
by Harry’s Palms- 31 replies

I want to put out there that Caryota Urens are very dangerous when they get big. Do not wait for them to flower….cut them down when they get large. I had been warned by @DoomsDave but after posting on here and talking to my tree service , decided to wait for the first inflorescence. DON’T DO IT! We had a nasty Santa Ana wind event following a good amount of rain. That is all it took . This morning I got a text from my neighbor “ your palm fell over! . It was straddling her driveway , her husband had already left for work and his brand new truck would have been crushed! I guided her out of her driveway so she could come and go. My small electric chainsaw won’t help with th…

Palermo Botanical Garden, Sicily (December 2025)

Palermo was a bit of mixed bag. Still pockets of stunning ancient heritage, but unfortunately the city in general does appear to have lost its way. The botanical garden on the other hand was a pleasant surprise, with a fantastic variety of palm species. Also the most comprehensive collection of citrus trees I've ever seen, the majority of which were full of ripe fruit. Well worth a visit. Washingtonia robusta Church of St. Dionisio 14th century ruins Phoenix sylvestris Washingtonia robusta Not 100%, but I think this is Trachycarpus takil. Labelled Trachycarpus fortunei. Rhopalostylis Sapida in Habitat, New Zealand 1 2 3 4

Just had the chance to explore some of the mainland Nikau Habitat on the West Coast of the South Island, and collect some seed. Never spent much time looking into this palm in habitat but it's incredible the variation depending on location, above/below canopy, and distance to the coast. Underneath the canopy they spread very wide, almost like Coconut or bangalows... there was many with green fronds below horizontal. After getting above canopy they turn into the typical shuttlecock shape. Also amazing to see hundreds of seedlings like grass around some really old ones in the forest. Enjoy..

Pyromania in perpetuity with palm pieces parts
by DoomsDave- 11 replies

It’s that time again - in the northern hemisphere! - to sit around a roaring conflagration in the fireplace, maybe tell ghost stories or….? When you edit palms as I’m doing, or have people in your hood doing the same, you’ll end up with palm wood and pieces/parts, some of which pyromaniacs like more than others. Dried dead palm leaves make great kindling, along with equally desiccated petioles, but they can be a challenge to use sometimes. So, share your experiences and thoughts and questions!

I bought this palm at Homedepot back in 2022. I think its a dwarf variety, but I can tell and the labels and pit when I bought it did not say dwarf. I will attach pictures of when I bought it and now that it has grown for a little over 3 years. If anyone can identify it, I would greatly appreciated. It think by looking at the size of it and if its a dwarf, it my fruit next year.

It's wintertime in Holland with snow and a few degrees below zero C.. Nothing to worry about, just enjoying the view of the garden with some Trachy. fortunei, a Chamaerops humilis vulcano, laurels with winterprotection for the stems and a few date palms! By the end of the week, it will all be over again!

Is this entire page wrong?

In Wikipedia, the English (and some other languages) article for Phoenix loureiroi contains a few images. The stem close up and the overview one both look like a Phoenix roebelenii to me, not a loureiroi (loureiroi are much less flat looking, and the stem looks very much like a roebelenii). Correct me if I'm wrong, by the way, but I think I am certain that the two images are incorrect

Clinostigmas in South Florida 1 2

Sorry, So Cal--this topic's about the east coast! Anyone seen any Clinostigmas growing down here? Fairchild gardens has a Clinostigma Harlandii with about 14' of trunk. A friend of mine is attempting a decent sized batch of Savoryanum--not out of the solid leaf yet, but very much healthy. I know Savoryanum is well represented in California, so my guess is it's a winner down here. The Clinostigma Harlandii looked pretty healthy after two consecutive, harsh winters(by our standards) so I want to believe this lovely palm is also safe. Two down, so what about the other 9? I have been wanting to grow Clinostigma Exorrhizum for some time, but prefer to see it local before I try…

Root barriers

Not exactly about palms but I wasn't sure in which forum to post. I am wondering if anyone has tried root barriers around trees, and whether they are worth it. What is your experience with trying to contain aggressive roots? To give some context, I want to plant my Eucalyptus deglupta in the ground, provided it makes it through the winter. It's been doing fine so far, despite totally unprotected and in a pot, and has survived 28F with minor damage. Now, the only spot available in the garden is about 20 feet from a retention wall downhill. My property is on a slope and the wall retains it. The wall is about 12 ft tall and quite sturdy. I don't want the roots…

Here are a few pictures taken here in Recife, Brazil, last week. We had a friend from Virginia (Palmtalk member Mark NoVa) visiting during the week, as he came to Recife for the Germany/US World Cup Football match and stayed in Sirinhaém during the weekend. The next day I took him on a visit to the RioMar Palmetum we had planted 2 years ago, here are the photos:

This is the luckiest palm in my garden. Twice it has been narrowly missed by huge falling trees, surviving without so much as a scratch. It even seems to like the decaying Cecropia trunk 1/4" from its base. Love watching this beautiful baby grow. Do you have Johannesteijsmannia magnifica in your garden? Or a photo of one you have admired on a palm tour somewhere in the world? Post your photos here! Not kidding about it being "in the jungle!"
