Hello! I’m located in Mexico City, which has a mild weather with ultra rainy summers, definitely NOT a cocos nucifera territory. But turns out I was just driving by and ran into the weirdest palm, it looked big, thriving and certainly similar to a COCOS NUCIFERA and i just couldn’t believe my eyes because it was big. I made a small investigation and turns out that palm tree has been there for a long time, since 2016! It was a small baby and it’s been growing ever since, now in 2020 it really got bigger but there’s no street view imagery, i promise I’ll bring current pictures, but here’s some detailed views of the palm tree and how it’s evolved throughout the years, is …

ovobontsira

This post is a response to a question I received on Facebook, and I am responding in PalmTalk because of the facilities for a more lengthy response. It involves growing a species of Dypsis (now Chrysalidocarpus) identified as ovobontsira in offerings from RPS that I sowed in June 2009 and in September 2013. The only seedling survivor of the 09 seed batch was planted on March 2019 and has grown well. This is what it looks like today (lawn chair for scale): I found another seedling in a seedpot that contained very different palms, obviously misplaced. Looking at my records, I saw that I was raising "orange crush" (now Chrysiladocarpus paucifolius) which the…

Bismarckia nobilis (Post Yours) 1 2 3

It's about 6 years old, growing slower in the Azores, and is wobbling. Probably because the planter has a tall rock bottom inside on one side occupying more than half of it and then it slides down to a deeper ground which has got no bottom and it was planted a bit on the high side, exposing the roots for 1/2 inch or so, so perhaps the palm pushed itself up a bit and never released its full potential roots into the soil. I added sand under it and I hope the roots will be released or I may have to stake it. Would staking it potentially damage the sensitive roots?

Palm Seeds
by Borosbobo- 1 follower

Hey! My parents went to Gran Canaria and brought me some palm seeds and I cant identify some of them. 1. The 3. Picture is the seeds with the flash on and on the 4. Picture I removed the flash. From the seeds I thought its some kind of sabal palm maybe sabal palmetto. But the leaves of the palm (pic 1&2) doesn’t really look like a sabal palm 2. I’m clueless about these seeds. The palms had a thin trunk with green/silver leaves. I would think that these are Bismarck palms with a cleaned trunk but on the last picture you can see a bismarck nobilis seed next to the seeds that my parents harvested from these palms and they are twice as big. Also could you g…

Dypsis lanceolata variation
by Tracy- 34 replies

So I have a pair of Dypsis lanceolata's growing in the yard. Once upon a time they were both on the same side of the yard with the same exposure. Sometime late in 2013, I transplanted one to the opposite side of the yard in a bit more sun. While it experienced more burning initially, it seems to be slowly adapting. The other is full shade in winter, from my house's shadow, then in spring and summer as the sun moves through a higher arc, its got sun most of the day until I planted a banana to its west to provide it pm filtered shade. All background, but the real question is in the photos. As you will see D lanceolata #1, on the sunny side is quite fuzzy on the top…

Big coconut for Tampa, FL

Just a monster for Tampa, FL. A few blocks from the bay but with that size, I’d assume it’s been through a few cold spells and freezes. I think the tight backyard and close homes/trees have shielded it.

So when they write in books or websites that a certain palm does/ Or does not good indoors. Do they mean a palm that would stay inside a heated and A/C house 24/7? Or does a palm that gets dragged between inside your house, in the non heated/AC garage and outside and back and forth depending on weather conditions an indoor palm too? Trying to figure this before i buy palms that will die quickly on me ( I drag in and out according to weather) Thxs Pat

Hello, I have read sabals like to be in the ground early on. I have a 1.5 year old seedling, just pushing out its third leaf, and I’m wondering how early is too early and what experiences those in SoCal have with sabals. I only have 1 so i didn’t want to risk too much. Sabal mauritiiformis thanks!

Unknown Palm Seedling: What am I
by PalmatierMeg- 7 replies

I was doing a weed pull and pot top-off of my outdoor container garden yesterday and came face to face with a palm seedling I'd been ignoring for a while. I need a fellow palm nerd to give me an ID of it. I have a few ideas but need confirmation as if it is what I suspect I'll have to decide whether to plant or compost it. See photos below Mystery Palm, Cape Coral, FL 2024
