Palm ID please.

A buddy of mine is in Oxnard, CA and took a picture of this gorgeous palm. Because of the fronds, thick fibers and no crownshaft, I think it is an Alfie. Are Ravanea Rivularis like this when unkept from the base?

Coconut palm transplanting/shock question.
by Floridaman43- 5 replies
Does anyone know about how long it takes for a fruiting coconut palm to start flowering/fruiting again after transplant? The coconut palm on the right was transplanted from a nursery (cut from ground) with fruit starting to grow. The fruit obviously died after transplant due to shock and new inflorescence have not grown back since and it’s been a year and a half. It is in good health and new leaves have been growing consistently since transplant but it’s been a bit disappointing new fruit has not grown yet…

Ring spacing
by Brad52- 5 replies
Not the best photo but…is ring spacing relative to site conditions and thus growth rates? I have several palms that I obtained as Veitchia joannis but they mostly don’t look alike so I am wondering what they might be, on this one the ring scars are very close together and none of the others are like that - but this is the only one that grew in some shade. I know that with bamboo environmetal conditions impact the internode spacing but are palms similar? Most of the joannis I have spacing 4” or so apart but this guy is usually an inch or so.

I thought I'd make a thread documenting what I've seen growing around Nelson, Richmond, Motueka area in the northern part of the South Island. It's a pretty pleasant climate here at 41 degrees south, one of the sunniest places in nz but a pretty mild temperature range and around 1m of rain pa. The local councils weather station near me has only showed 2 nights dropping below zero in the 7 or 8 years it shows records for. We do usually have a fair number of frosts and temps close to 0 though, but having tree canopy over more sensitive species means we can grow quite a range of things for our latitude. Google gives our average temps in July as 13/3, and February …

Advice on Leucothrinax morrisii
by Phoenikakias- 6 replies
Here are my three prized (because I have been raising them from tiny seeds) Leucothrinax morrisii specimens. I would like to know whether they would stand a chance as outplanted in my climate and in such case what would be an ideal spot. I had left them unfortunately for many years in their original liners and had them potted up just last summer. What kind of soil do they like most? (and pH). I had tried in the past a bought specimen, which sailed through the winter in a pot outdoors (no signs of leaf scorch ) and in following May was put in to the ground, where it collapsed. Not sure about the reasons if its demise (root damage by cold either while in pot or right afte…

I picked up a couple of these from Floribunda a year or two ago and they are both growing well in pots. They haven’t been bothered by chill or heat or much of anything so far although they have lived under 60% shade cloth the whole time I’ve had them. I’m thinking I’d like to put at least one of these in the ground this spring but info on these is a little scarce. Does anyone know how these do in Florida? How much sun can they take?

They say look at someone’s book collection and you can get a pretty good idea about that person obviously iam a palm nut in the days before the internet (I only started to google about 10 years ago) there was a thing called books information was a bit limited so you had to do research with a book then you had to find the books with the content you wanted I still use my books it’s nice to read them and it’s better than having a pixel addiction with a flat screen also you can learn a lot from books it’s a different feeling holding a book instead of looking at a screen 📺

Didn't know whether to post this here or in travel logs...moderator can move if necessary. Today, the Brisbane palm and cycad society (including half the ratpack) had a field outing to Mt Warning in northern NSW. It is approximately a 2 hour drive from Brisbane and 45 minutes from the central Gold Coast. The closest large town is Murwillumbah, which is an old sugar cane town. Mt Warning was named by Captain Cook when he sailed up the east coast of Australia back in 1770. It's aboriginal name is Wollumbin. The mountain stands almost 3800ft tall, and is the remnant plug of an ancient shield volcano...apparently the largest shield volcano in the southern hemisphe…

Mites, Scale, and Aphids 1 2

I just won the war of scale on an Alexander King, just to find a new invasion on a Chamadorea caratactum. Huge scale insects. In the past I've slugged it out slowly with Neem and other horticultural oils. Now I'm trying this Bayer 3-in-1 stuff. Is the Bayer any good? I like that it's readily available, instead of a home concoction or expensive mail order only product. What are you all using?

I was surfing for photos of an Arenga Engleri hedge, and ran across this really bizarre photo: It is labeled as Arenga Engleri on this website: https://kadiyamnursery.com/products/arenga-englerii-dwarf-sugar-palm-formosa-palm Clearly it is NOT an Arenga Engleri, and isn't even in the same family. It looks like some kind of weird combination of a Corypha-sized trunk and Coccothrinax-sized fronds. I'm not even convinced it's a palm. Maybe it's something completely different, like a giant papyrus or a relative of the "Panama Hat Palm" Carludovica palmata. Any thoughts on an ID?

New to Palm's and need help with one
by bcre3306- 6 replies

Hi I recently moved to the Jacksonville Florida area and had a few palms installed and ever since the one was installed all the outside branches have turned brown and never really looked great. I've tried watering the heck out of it and also some palm fertilizer but nothing seems to help the gutter parts of it. I attached a picture but you can see the center continues to grow green shoots but I can't seem to get the outermost looking good. Any suggestions on what I can try and do in order to get this looking better? Also if anyone can identify what kind of palm it is I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you Brian

Technique for getting fungicide into tall palm trees
by beaukit720- 2 replies
I have a very tall two headed Livistona chinensis that I just noticed has fungus inside the crown on one of the heads. I am used to treating my palms with copper fungicide but haven't ever had to treat one that is this tall so I was wondering what the best way to get the fungicide into a very tall palm that I cannot access with a pump sprayer and a ladder. I was wondering if the copper can be mixed with a hose end sprayer and sprayed up into the crown or if there is another way it can be done. Thank you.

Growing in a hot house

It can get quite challenging growing palms in a hothouse especially with extreme heat if it 40 degrees Celsius outside it certainly gets hot inside I water the ground just to raise humidity have trays of water plus the soil moisture evaporation on extreme days I monitor frequently just to make sure iam not cooking the plants it’s incredible for plant growth with high soil temperatures it’s an artificial environment you have to create get it right and all is growing well get wrong it becomes extremely expensive and heart breaking so far so good the best part is using it for seed propagation no bottom heating required a bonus I use styrofoam box’s with lids to control the t…

THE LEGEND OF SYAGRUS ABREOJOS 1 2 3

It was July, 1979, and I was in Baja California Sur Mexico 600 miles south of the border on a surf trip at a place called Punta Abreojos (open eyes) when I discovered the palm. On a cervesa run into town I noticed a lonsome palm tree planted in a truck tire. There were 15 ft of closely ringed trunk with hundreds of bottle tops for mulch in the coastal desert sand. This palm was very unique as only intrduced date palms and native Washintonias and Braheas are to be encountered in the arroyos and canyons. It was obvious to me that it was some sort of Syagus, as its trunk and seeds were similar. After purchasing a few cases of Pacifcos we stoped at the ice factory,as this tow…

Dypsis forficifolia

Such handsome, colorful little palms from Madagascar. Although they are clumping, there only seems to be one dominant reed like stem at one time with adjacent stems low almost like a ground cover. A protected, semi shady spot in the garden and thrives on humidity. I have no idea about cold tolerance, but they might be hardier than they look. Planted as seedlings about seven years ago. a couple of shots of the leaves. Tim
