I am in Houston, TX. I bought and planted 9 Queen Palms about a 3 weeks ago. 2 of them look terrible. One is very limp. The other is not limp but the one of the fronds turned completely brown and dry. The new growth does not seem to be as dark green as the other queens. Were these 2 just bad selections, or did I do something wrong while planting them?

Howea bellmooreana germinating
by happypalms- 2 replies
I collected a few bellmooreana seeds through a door knock and asking. So definitely fresh seeds and they have taken close to 8 months to start to pop up. No bottom heating just in the hothouse in a styrofoam box with a plastic banana bag wrapped around them. So easy to germinate just time is all that is needed. Now to see how many germinate but so far they look promising!

The tree was identified as a Phoenix reclinata, or at least close to one, in a prior thread so that's what I am going with. It's been here forever it seems. Right now its a big mess out there as I trim a bit more each day. 97 degrees and 100% humidity really takes it's toll on you. That whole circled area is what I am trying to get under control. Everything that grows below the main trunks. I know they eventually turn into new trunks but that could take decades, right? So about the pups (if I am using the right lingo), over the years we have been here they keep spreading out, which I guess is a good thing because the tree is healthy and …

Bentinckia condapanna 1 2

I have a few Bentinckia condapanna from the Big Island nursery we all love so much. One of them is a double and should be super interesting as it gets bigger. Today I arrived to a palm enthusiast’s home with the plan to bring home a Dypsis lanceolata or a Chambeyronia hookeri. I didn’t come home with either. I noticed a nice Bentinckia bursting out of a 15g. I plan to plant it out first thing tomorrow morning. The location sees morning and early afternoon full sun this time of year, then filtered sun at 1:30 and full shade by 2:30. Please share any photos or experiences with your Bentinckia.

A few garden pics
by Harry’s Palms- 6 replies

This time of year is especially rewarding in the garden . New growth everywhere! My climate is mild so we do get growth in winter but it really picks up now with warmer temps , usually low 80’s f. I got off work yesterday and checked out my “to do” list for my weekend gardening and watering. I took a few pics of some of the plants . Harry The Rhopalostylus Bauri Cheesmania is opening up! Behind it you can see an “ Ernie” loving the company with a new frond opening. Dypsis Plumosa is on its third frond since it was planted about a year ago. Next to the Plumosa is a double Dypsis Basilonga ( I think) . The loosely tied piece of wire so the petiole don’t break…

Little Chuniophoenix nana taking the cold weather
by happypalms- 1 reply

Just a few nanas to keep the supply chain going for the garden. Germinated from my own seeds collected from the garden, I had to give Mother Nature a hand with a bit of pollination and it was a great success in doing so. A fantastic easy palm to grow although slow to get a decent size about them. They make a wonderful container specimen for the patio or just in the greenhouse. A true beauty of a palm well worth growing in any collection!

Digging out a palm tree and transporting it 1 2

I have this Butia that this person is letting me come and dig up and take away but what's the process in digging out a palm and transporting it? The only thing I know is to keep the rootball as big as humanly possible within my strengths, we have a trailer we can get it on but what do you do with the root ball? What do you cover it with and should I tie the fronds up and cover them as well? I think I have a tarp but I have zero Idea what's the best way too ensure the safety of the palm, so tips would be apperciate! 🥰

Pindo Palm looks sick

I planted this 3 gallon Pindo Palm about a month ago. It looked very healthy when it arrived. It has browned significantly since I planted it. I have drip irrigation but I am not sure if I am watering it too much, or not enough. I run the drip lines in 10 minute increments, 3 times a day, every other day. I have 8 other Pindo’s that were planted months before this one that are doing fine. I am in Houston, TX.

Choices…

Hello! After my failed Livistona Nitida, which was my fault, my protection method wasn’t good enough, and I accidentally didn’t cover it in time. I’ve had a couple of ideas of what to replace it with and just want second opinions, and these are what I’ve considered. Mule - I like the idea of this cause it would provide radiating heat from the house but I’m unsure if the spread would be too much, I don’t mind it though as long as it’s temporary. Butia - Wouldn’t mind this either but it could be way fatter than a mule so it could be too intense? Trachycarpus - Safe choice, not much spread. Sabal maybe…. I prefer something quicker though. Cycad… thou…

What is the secret to growing Neoveitchia storckii?
by Palmaceae- 1 follower

I planted a small Neoveitchia storckii back in May of 2014, never did that well. It would put out new fronds but very slowly. I put it in the most protected part of my yard but did not receive that much shade as I really did not have any at that time (that was the first problem, too much sun). Since then things have grown and it did get partially shaded during the day. This year we never went below 40 but it is quickly declining. So the question is, what is the secret of growing this palm? Below is a picture of it a month ago, looks a lot worse now. It is the small palm in front of the small coconut.

I'm not sure if I explained in the title properly but the pictures are pretty clear as to my question. Our queen palm was devastated from the last two hurricanes. I haven't been able to schedule a tree company to come cut it down just yet, which I am glad I didn't. I noticed what appears to be .... several new spears appearing. Could this be a new heart?? IS IT ALIVEEEE????

Palms in the Azores (Saõ Miguel island)
by Gunnar Hillert- 4 replies

Aloha - This year, we got off the island of Hawai‘i and travelled to the closest thing Europe has to offer, the Azores, an island group in the middle of the Atlanta that is part of Portugal. I know it is not totally the same, as it is much further north in the Atlantic. The closest in climate (in my gestimates) that Hawaii has to offer is Volcano on the Big Island or the higher cloud forest elevations of Kaloko Drive in Kona (Big Island). Maybe somewhat close to the climate is also Waimea (Big Island). We are staying right next to the Terra Nostra Park (Parque Terra Nostra) in Furnas on the island of Saõ Miguel. That place is truly amazing! It is a 150 year old botan…

I thought it would be fun to start a thread on my up and coming garden in Vista California. I wasn't planning on doing a thread but I got pressured into by a few PSSC members.. you know who you are...lol My wife and I bought and investment property almost 3 years ago in Vista California. My wife doesn't understand the palm disease like most of my friends so I needed a place to plant a garden where I can grow bigger stuff. I've been officially working in the garden for about 6 months. It's been a very slow project but its finally starting to pay off. I recently started planting palms on the south facing slope in a good micro climate. I've wanted to do this for some…

Just a few joeys potted
by happypalms- 6 replies

An easy palm to germinate and grow, well at least I think so anyway. The only problem you will have with a Joey is if you break the roots that and keeping the water up too them. You don’t really need bottom heating for germination just a warm place is fine. Joeys are not as dramatic as they are made out to be simply treat them like any other palm, except for the broken roots and grow them on bench’s.
