Let’s See Your Pritchardia Palms! 1 2

I wish the Pritchardia genus was common here in Northern California. At least in favorable climate areas. They seem to need not much more than some good soil and supplemental water in the warm season. Below are: P. hillebrandii, schattaueri, minor, beccariana, schattauri, and thustonii (probably). Show yours please!

Replacement plantings after Hurricane Ian

Last week my husband and I traveled to the Bradenton area to visit Tom Blank (@sonorafans) who generously donated several of his extra palms to replant in our Garden Lot after Hurricane Ian pretty much destroyed the yard. We also got to see Tom's gorgeous tropical-themed garden - the Satakentia and Copernicias baileyana and fallaensis were awesome. Tom gave us a 5g Sabal causiarum and 3 more seedlings in 14" pots, plus two Dictyosperma album, rubra and conjagutam, and a nifty teddy bear palm. This week we planted the 5g Sabal, one Dictyosperma and the teddy bear in now-barren patch of the Garden Lot. The second Dictyosperma is waiting its turn and we potted up the se…

Is this possible/ worth the effort? Jubeopsis caffra
by Jadd Correia- 2 replies
Can a JUBEOPSIS CAFFRA of this size be dug up and transported effectively? Also, could a multiple clump of this size be divided up? Possibly into two or three and all be transplanted into the ground? If so I am willing to put in the work and effort to split this monster with a couple folks. I don’t have funds or direct experience with digging up a palm of this size, but I would be willing to learn and give it a go with solid guidance. Anywhose, thought it was a beautiful palm the would be beyond impressive and impactful for a garden or two.

I cut one seed in half and tried to crack the other and took a close up. Does this look like proper development of the endocarp and endosperm that would indicate a viable seed? There were two Canaries at the collection site one with an open male spathe about 10 yards next to the female that i collected the seeds from. So I assume, if viable, it will pure Phoenix canariensis. I was just curious to see see if the experts can figure out if these seeds will sprout? Thanks Dan

Lethal bronzing in Florida
by BlueMarlin226- 1 follower

As a lover of palms, I’m stressing about the future of our palms in the state of Florida. From what I’ve read, it’s been in Florida since 2006 and in Yucatan Mexico and Texas before that. Even so, I haven’t noticed it until earlier this year. I’m in Lakeland, and I’ve noticed that a ton of palms of multiple varieties are dead or dying. What is it that caused the massive acceleration of lethal bronzing in the past year, and what could be lasting effects of this horrible blight?

Almost 20 years ago I escaped the frozen tundra of Michigan and moved into the sauna of NW Orlando. It's hard to describe the abrupt transition, but I was pretty sure that I moved into an oven. Despite the oppressive heat and humidity in the summer, it was far better than spending September-April indoors and never seeing the sun! I lucked out when I moved, as I bought very cheap just before a huge price jump in the Orlando housing market. I found a nice house on about 3/4 acre of land with a great looking canopy of about 40 big oaks and a few pines. What I did *not* luck out on is my ignorance of southern oak trees. I didn't know that they were *not* the typical…

Glass or plastic container for seed germination?
by SoulofthePlace- 1 follower

Is a glass jar equal to a ziploc baggy or a small plastic contanier for palm seed germination? My concern is that a glass container may not let as much heat to the seeds as a plastic bag? Yet I would prefer to use small glass jars to germinate seeds rather than messy plastic bags.

Seeds be poppin’

Nothing crazy rare, or groundbreaking, but I was out watering and noticed the foxtail seeds laying around are popping like popcorn right now. I normally clean up most of these, but it’s been busy lately. Many get scattered about and lost. The Bismark seeds germinate consistently all over the yard, but these…. not so much normally.

I would like this to be a thread where Palmtalkers post cold sensitive zone 10 palms you come across in the Orlando area. The ever-increasing effects of the urban heat island are more evident each year. The first is an updated photo of the Cocos nucifera growing at Smashburger near downtown.

Is this a malayan coconut? Palm Coast FL
by Gottagrowemall- 0 replies

Do you guys think this is a maypan or a pure type of malayan? It was sold to me as a 7 gallon maypan around 2.5 years ago. I've made posts with this tree before. It's seen below 35 a number of times now but when we were in the 20s last year in December I had it correctly protected. It did see some frost in january/feb after that though, now she's recovered.
