Hi, I found these before and I thought they looked very interesting so I wanted to know what species they are I am very terrible at identification so I would guess Pinanga baviensis (syn. P. sinii) for the first one, Ptychosperma propinquum (syn. P. macarthurii) for the second and the last one something like Livistona. Thanks

Happy new year everybody. A small update of my coconut palm in Cyprus. It's still alive for another winter. I increased the water in the summer and it started to make a difference in the growth.

Inspired by @palmsOrl's thread for Orlando, I'm starting this thread so we can share remarkable palms in the greater Tampa Bay area. What I mean by "remarkable" is a palm that's unusual for the area it is planted. A 10' coconut in Wesley Chapel would be remarkable whereas the same palm in St. Pete Beach would not be. Just use own judgement and err on overposting. The "greater Tampa Bay area" is somewhat ambiguous. For the purposes of this thread, let's go with a very broad definition and include all these areas: Hernando Pasco Hillsborough Pinellas Polk Manatee Sarasota

Soil mix 101 home brew
by happypalms- 30 replies

@happypalms I mix my own soil up with various ingredients. First is coco coir coarse, perlite, nutricote, top quality potting mix, and volcanic rock crushed, blue metal is another alternative to the crushed dust. Give it a good mix up and you’re ready to go. I prefer this coarse mix for seedlings it has good drainage and plenty of air. Get your soil corre t from day one and your growing troubles are over, well sort of so to speak. It works for me, you may want to tweak your recipe to suit your own growing conditions and climate.

Coconut 9b florida.

I planted this coconut just under 2 years ago February of 2023. It already had bad freeze damage from the nursery because it went through 3 nights around 28degrees. Last winter our coldest night was 35 with no frost. So far this year we have had many many nights below 40. We had 1 night at 35 with very bad frost. We had to use scrapers on our windshields. Anyway I am located inland hudson, FL. Many big nice fruiting coconuts a few miles from me in part richey and hudson beach. I have burn barrels i plan to use around it when we get below freezing. I also ran heat tape in a spiral outwards around trunk under the mulch. The heat tape has kept the soil about 5 deg warm…

Astrocaryum help (URGENT)
by idontknowhatnametuse- 5 replies

I recently got 3 Astrocaryum mexicanum; The plants were heavily root bound and I had to change them into a bigger pot, they wouldn't like the colder temps of 16-25⁰C with their roots exposed, they also took 8 days to arrive because the nursery owner insisted in sending them before new years and dia de reyes, so there was a lot of traffic and 2 days of no delivery. The leaf tips are starting to lose color and fold/become dry over the days. What is this? Some type of fungus? Do they need sun, maybe (I keep them shaded, treating them like Chamaedoreas)? The soil stays consistently moist.

I asked about some spots on my Christmas palms awhile back. Today I found all of these patches on my juvenile Christmas palms, I have two identical plants and both have them, mostly on the top newer fronds on this one. These spots were not there a few days ago NOTE: I did recently have a pest person come by and spray, not sure if it’s related. There was also the recent brief frost at 34 degrees; these were covered with frost covers

Heterospathe philippinensis

I’ve lost track of mine but suspect this bloke - do they split and tiller? It was planted in too much sun, in a too dry of a spot with zero supplemental water and has endured several, weeks long drought periods but still lives. Tall bamboo now providing shade so it’s looking better and now getting mossy.

"What did you do today?"
by JohnAndSancho- 9 replies

Somewhere in here, buried amongst the rubble, there used to be a "What did you do today?" thread that was friendly, all-inclusive, nothing but hugs and high fives all around. In that spirit, here's what I did this morning. Some "craft beads" from @happypalms sprouted somewhere along the way. One didn't make it and there's 6 more in the baggie. Chamaedorea Adescendens. And don't be hating on my labels. That's Dollar General PROFESSIONAL masking tape. Grocery store papayas. I haven't seen them in stores here in a while, so I hope these make it. (The ones in the cups) I'm gonna have to ask my friend what these are again. They're some kinda…

New member, but have been getting some good info from everyone on this site for a while. Started getting some palms a few years back and got inspired to start a bigger garden. In DeBary FL, about 30 miles north of Orlando. Progress so far: 2 B. Alfredii, one on the left planted from a 15g in June 2022, other went in this week from a 25g. Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana planted from a 7g in November 2021. Side yard has a couple of flamethrowers, Chambeyronia Oliviformis, another king palm, Lanonia Dasyantha, Caryota Obtusa, Chamaedorea Radicalis x Cataractarum (most likely) and Chamaedorea Microspadix. Plenty of other tropicals mixed in, big fan of Plumerias.…

An interesting pair of specimens I saw today in Chellah, Rabat, Morocco. Very thin trunks with disproportionately large and stiff leaves, unsure if this is a cross with roebelnii and dactylifera or canariensis

Need help on an ID, please
by Mandrew968- 4 replies

This palm is at the Bahamas National Trust-the past garden of the Langlois. There were many fabulous and rare species in this garden but time, droughts, and hurricanes has altered it from it's past glory. I am working with them to do what we can to get back some of that past. Yesterday I saw this palm and it stumped me. So who better than Palmtalk to help a brother out?! Thanks for the assistance, all.
