Coconut Palm Problem
by spockvr6- 12 replies
Does anyone have any ideas about what might be wrong with this Coconut? As each leaf comes out, it breaks about halfway down the petiole. And, the leaves also get burned/browned looking areas. As you can see, the crown is slowly declining and there are only 3-4 leaves. Here is a closeup of the newest leaf which broke off halfway down the petiole.

4 Sabal Palms in garden
by Al in Kona- 17 replies

While there are IMO, many different species of very nice Sabal palms, I chose the following 4-species. I guess you could say they are my favorites: Sabal sp huge leaf. I obtained a tiny seedling from Phil Bergman's Jungle Music Nursery about 6 or 7 years ago. He said the seed came from the Ferguson garden in Southen California. Here's what it looks like today . . .

Local park with non local palms
by Walter John- 19 replies

There is a local park near me, on the waterfront, and after a major upgrade, somebody decided to plant Washingtonias there instead of our native Livistona for example. I can't understand the thinking of these planners. Besides my personal opinion on palm selection, they look okay. Here's the pics I took this afternoon.

One tough bottle
by JungleGina- 6 replies
I got this bottle palm for FREE from a co-worker who bought a new house and didn't like the palms in the yard. Getting it home was difficult but I wasn't about to let this baby pass me by. It took 3 people (and quite a beating) to get it out of its hole and into the truck. And look at it now, just over 4 mos. later...happy as can be!

Something scary...

I somehow lost my weaponry at Matty B's bash (no doubt Paul is gopher hunting with my assualt rifle as we speak)...so I had to trap this bad boy today... Here's the scary part, Matt...he had breached my aviary wire perimeter for this Roystonia triple. He was "Inside the wire" as we like to say in the business. Luckily I caught him quickly, before I had to call 'broken arrow' (code for-position overrun by the enemy, drop ordinance on my position)

A Butia First!
by Bilbo- 5 replies

Many congratulations to IPS member Nigel Kembrey on germinating the first B.capitata from a B.capitata home grown here in the UK. A little while back I sent some of my B.cap seed to Nigel and frankly it seemed very unlikely that anything would germinate as there did not initially apear to be viable embryos. Well there was ONE exception and its a-growing. Well done for your persistance Nigel! Regardez Juan

Palms and Lawn Weed Control
by ruskinPalms- 18 replies
- 1.5k views
The weeds are winning. I fear I am going to have to resort to chemical warfare in this particular battle. Any suggestions for weed control in St. Augustine lawns that won't harm my palms or at least will keep the harm to a minimum? Most of the stuff at the box stores has Atrazine in it. What will this do to my palms? Does it actually control weeds in the lawn? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for any and all replies!

Caryota Urens
by doubravsky- 3 replies

I spend lots of time on this board wondering at the amazing growth I see on other folks' stuff... so here's one of mine that really surprised me. I bought 3 one gallon C. Urens from El Blanco (thanks Jeff!) in the spring. Potted them up to 5 gal. in April, and set them on the porch. I went back this week to rearrange some stuff, and noticed that all three had roots sticking out of the pots! So I'm planting them out today...

Chamaedorea hybrids
by Nigel- 8 replies
I pollinated a Chamaedorea radicalis with microspadix pollen earlier this year. The inflorescence is now carrying a full crop of ripe red seeds, well all except 4 that is. The unusual thing is that there is 4 seeds that are double the size of the others and they remain green. What think ye all ? Are the big ones hybrids ?

Watering too much? How much is too much?
by www.dadluvsu.com- 6 replies
There doesn't seem to be a ton of info on watering palms with regards to how much and how often... Of course I realize this is a highly variable topic (this seems to be common when dealing with plants) that has a million variables that could affect watering rates, growing medium, humidity, sun/shade, etc. I guess I'm just looking for some feedback on other peoples watering schedules... aaaaaand, there is another problem in my pots. I have been out of town for a couple weeks on vacation in a cooler climate (that was refereshing!) and when I returned there is an abundance of yucky stuff growing on the surface of the medium in a bunch of pots... some is fuzzy and…

My Dying Dypsis and other woes
by Howeadypsis- 13 replies

Here is the poor thing! Its probably gonna die but at least it will have a chance to spread out in the garden before the frosts come Ive not done well with my palms this year. My CIDP is now planted out a few plants down from this one and is slowly recovering, and the little date palm that i grew from a stone in 04 curled up its toes too-couldnt keep it in the house as it was too spiky for the kids, and i no longer have a greenhouse so it had to stay outside. not normally a problem but this summer has been all rain, untlil now! My Brahea edulis seeds, sown in January, still havent shown so I guess theyre a no go! And out of my P.roebelenii seedlings that sprouted on…

Calcium oxalate in Carpenteria acuminata fruit
by fastfeat- 3 replies
Just picked up about 5 pounds of Carpenteria acuminata fruit from some local trees yesterday. I collected the fruit (some intact, some oozing from being stepped on) barehanded. Fortunately, I guess, I didn't get any irritation from the calcium oxalate supposedly present in the fruit. Where in/on the fruit is the calcium oxalate--surface of the fruit, flesh, or both? Is calcium oxalate water soluble? Since I'm now soaking the fruit to loosen the pulp, will the crystals go into suspension? Will the fruit be "safer" to handle the longer it sits and soaks? Thanks in advance.

Standard used to judge a palm
by Tim McKernan- 5 replies
Has anyone used a standard form or guideline for judging palms or plants in general? If I were to use a scale of 1-10, which qualities could palms be judged on for "Best grown?" "Rarest?" "Most unusual"? "Best native?" "Best overall?" Let me tell you why I ask. (plug)The South Florida Palm Society is having their annual Fall "World's largest palm sale" sale and event November 3rd and 4th at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Miami, Fl. We are having a "member's only event" Friday evening that will include awards given out for best palms in several categories. I'd like to create something we can give to different judges each year that will make it easy to rat…

Curses! The fire ants are back!
by htownpalmer- 18 replies

I live in Houston, where fire ants are a way of life. Below is a picture of a potted Bismarckia Nobilis. After growing very fast last summer, it has only put out one new spear (two keep coming, but have yet to open up) this summer. Earlier this year, I chased away a colony of red ants by flooding the pot, opting not to put any pesticides in the pot. Well, they're back! Questions: Are fire ants harmful? Should I use pesticides? If so, what ones are ok to use on a potted palm? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Who did I buy this nitida from?
by NCpalmqueen- 4 replies

Dang, I can't remember nuttin' anymore. Who did I buy this Livistona nitida from? Just wanted to let you know it is thriving here. The extreme drought doesn't seem to bother it. It went thru winter with a plastic cover over the top. It lost several spears in the early Spring, but when the real heat turned on in late April/early May, it blew out fans like there's no tomorrow. The photo isn't so great, but it has put on about 6" of skinny trunk this summer.

Dypsis lutea
by Daryl- 1 reply
- 1.2k views
I bought a palm labelled as Dypsis lutea today. It is a great looking palm with broad, leathery leaflets. However, it looks nothing like the photo in POM. So either it is a very variable species, or else (surprise surprise) I have a different species with incorrect labelling. Either way it is a little beauty! Is anybody else out there growing this species, and what does it look like? Daryl.
