I saw this following notice from the Cycad mailing list. It seems that no one has posted this here yet. I hope some of our Southern CA contributors can go and give us a nice report with photos next week. Thanks! --------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. I bought this guy today at Home Depot. I was just passing through and got lucky I think. The "Home Depot Expert" told me it was a T. fortunei or no maybe it's a Bismarkia? Well, I beg to differ. I think I know what it is but I'll take some guesses. I paid $55.00 for this beauty. Dypsis seedlings
by Utopia Palms- 9 replies

Here are some great looking understory dypsis the one at the top left is dypsis boiviniana this species has a very thick leaf and is easily recognized as a seedling. The one beside this is a Dypsis species that came in with seed of D.louvelii it looks just like a chamaedorea seedling. Bottom left is Dypsis forficifolia there are at least 4 species that can look identical at this stage, all are fantastic looking dypsis so look out for anything that looks like these. The last one is dypsis louvelii as a seedling this can also have a few other species that look very similar at this stage as well, one is D.mocquerysiana both of these species stay under the 1m tall mark an…

Scott's Palms, etc.
by Coloradoboi- 12 replies

Hi all. The weather today was beautiful, so I decided to take some photos around the property. Trachycarpus Fortunei Here are several photos of my Trachy. The winter freezes have taken their toll on the poor guy, but he is pushing a new spear. The Trachy is planted on the southwest side of the house, and is kept alive in the winter with rope lights, canvas tents etc. Even though he looks rather unhealty, I believe he will thrive. Other Property Photos I picked up this little guy at lowes for $1.49. Can anyone ID Him? This is where I will be spending any of my freetime, lol. Thanks For reading!!

Within the next week or two I will be bringing in a shipment of palms from the Fallbrook, CA area into San Angelo, TX. I should have room on the truck if anybody is looking for something special that can be obtained from S. CA and is willing to pick it up in San Angelo, TX. PM me with your requests and I will see what my contacts out there can come up with for you. Species name and size of plant you desire would be most helpful.

Can anyone out there tell me if the one I have is the real thing? *OOOPS...hold that thought...have to get a photo first!* (I'll add the photo later) How large does it get? Is it similar to capitata? Cold tolerance? Growing conditions? Anyone have photos to share? Many thanks.

After spending a lot of cash on fancy glazed pots and then they either blow over or crack, I decided to try my attempt at building a nice 4' x 4' x 4' wooden container for a large Carpenteria acuminata. After about $50.00, dressing it up with some tropical accessories, and 3 hours of labor...here it is.

Pushing Up Mushy Spear
by JimR- 7 replies
My bottle palm took some damage last month from some cold winds (temps. got down to about 35F). It is now pushing up a new spear. About 6 in. is showing, but the spear tip (all that is showing) is grey/white and soft to the touch. It seems to still be being pushed up, though. The spear tip feels a little loose, but I do not want to pull too hard on it. Any thought/suggestions.

A view from above
by Jeff in St Pete- 5 replies

Last week as I was flying from Quepos to San Jose I got a few arial shots of the palm plantations surrounding Quepos. Quepos was a banana town at one time but when the banana blight hit, they replanted with African Oil Palms which has grown into a big industry in this area of Costa Rica. From the air, they look like tiny starbursts. One last shot of just a portion of the plantations.
