Wodyatia x Veitchia at Home Depot
by Butch- 27 replies
- 1.4k views
Hi all, This is my 1st post here, but I have lurked for years. I have gathered so much info from all you guys and enjoyed this site immensely. I had to post that I found 8 or 10 5gal. triple Foxey Ladies at the La Mirada, CA Home Depot for $20.99. I bought 1 and was hoping some of you might be interested if you are local. I am a rank amature and could be wrong about the identity but since I have both Wodyatias and Veichias I don't think I am. They are marked"King Palms". Ain't no way they're kings. Hope this is of some use to some of you. Butch

root pruning
by xerophyte_nyc- 8 replies

One of my (and other northern palm in pot growers) goals is to grow healthy specimens in pots while trying to limit growth to a certain degree, otherwise pot sizes can get out of hand. There seems to be controversy over treating palms like bonsai, where on an annual or every other year basis, the roots are pruned drastically to stimulate ramification of new feeder roots. Can palm roots handle this? I wonder if limited pruning every other year can accomplish this. Let's say with the help of other people to lift a rootball out of pot, one would proceed to remove a few inches of rootball from the bottom, say about 10% of the root mass, along with some roots on the si…

I just built a new spa under my bismarckia. It has a spa light that can be set on one of several colors (I like the red) which reflects nicely off the silver fronds at night. The fronds hang out over the tub like big umbrellas. I took the first photo from my third floor deck. Tim

...which cross would be the coolest to do? With more and more in the landscape, there will be opportunities popping up before long. Gary L's R Glauca are flowering aleady. I think a Glauca x Xerophila would be interesting.

Adonidia Merrillii
by oppalm- 5 replies
- 1.3k views
I bought a quadruple Adonidia Merrilli last fall (2006), overwintered it inside and now I want to split it up. The trees range from 3' to 6' tall. The four trunks are very close together, almost touching each other. I don't know how sensitive the roots are to being disturbed. Any thoughts on my chances of success splitting these into indivdual pots?

I bought this palm for $40 including shipping and was very excited when it arrived. The seed came from a Dypsis leptocheilos but in the location of the mother plant was Dypsis decaryi and it appears that this plant is a hybrid of the two. I am seeking your input to confirm its genetics.

What makes a Dypsis a Dypsis?
by ruskinPalms- 11 replies

Hi all, With all these great posts about Madagascar here lately showing all the variations of Dypsis I was wondering what actually lands a palm in the Dypsis genus. It is a vey variable genus, almost too variable. I wonder if this genus will get blown to pieces in the future by taxonomists? Thanks in advance!

A Genus that rarely pops up on the forum is Geonoma. Although not a huge genus, they are a highly variable and some times colourful species numbering around 50 . Native habit is from Central America to Brazil from medium to high elevations. A few questions; Who's growing Geonoma's ? Which species are you growing ? How easy/difficult are they for you? Your favorite(? Your must have or most desired? Kami.

Hi, I'm about to plant a P. torralyi that has some pretty tall strap leaves. It's going to be a full sun area, and The hottest months are coming up - possibly up to 115F, All day sun. My question is, being a young plant, will this prove too much for it? Livistonia, I'm not worried about. It looks like it can take anything Thanks for any thoughts!
