Got some satranala decussilvae seed from Ortanique. The first one popped a few days ago. Here's the unusual seed: Sprouting: And my new hydroponic setup for a Dypsis ambositrae. Used a 5 gallon nursery pot and 5 gallon Home Depot bucket, pond pump, diatomaceous rock, wooden holder. and you can barely see the pump and water From what I hear, expanded clay isn't used anymore and Diatom. rock has replaced it.

NEED HELP with the SOIL mix!!
by Trópico- 22 replies

I had the unpleasant experience of losing 4 seedlings this weekend alone. Now this is not as big as some of you who have lost large, trunking and established palms that you thought were going to make it but still it hits hard especially if the seedling is the last one of the species and you have to start all over again. This is (was) one of my prized Hydriastele pinangoides which was one of the last ones I had. The last one I lost the next day. Root cause: Root rot. Progression: Seedling growth slowed, stopped, then all leaves dried all at once (dry weather helped). The brown edges appeared during winter but the seedling still grew well otherwise. The r…

Seed Stripping
by Palmtrader- 1 reply
I have only been in the seed production business for about four years and I am sure this is a topic that has been discused in the past but I recently aquired tens of thousands of various Syagrus seeds in all their fleshy glory and find them a nightmare to strip, I have used cement mixers and even left them out for the insects to eat the flesh but find seeds like this very difficult and time consuming to clean. I would be grateful for any advice (especially from nurserymen) on any favoured techniques. There has to be an easy way.

Lifting a palm 1 ft out of ground
by chris.oz- 1 reply
Looking at the thread "Burying 1 ft of kentia trunk, Is this OK?" begs the opposite question. Now why would a person plant a palm 1ft out of the ground ??? Well in this case they planted a D. lutescens? in a pot. The clumping action burst the pot, but only after the roots had gone into the ground. It did survive quite nicely actually  Location: Sumatran town of Palembang.

Gents Its been a several years since Ive been to this site. Good to see the same names. I had to reregister my username was lost. I am remodelling the landscaping a bit and want to create mounds about a foot high where my kentias are. The Kentias have about 3-4 feet og clear trunk. Will buring 1 foot of trunk with good quality dirt cause problems with the kentias? Thanks Dave in Ventura

IPS Board Meeting/Biennial in 2010
by Jeff Searle- 17 replies

I remember at the Dominican Rep. biennial, the board mentioned to us all, that there would be a board meeting held in May out in California sometime. So I am wondering along with others, was there a decision made yet on what country was picked to host the biennial in 2010? Costa Rica has been chosen for 2008. The last I had heard was that Thailand, and Brazil were the front runners with also The Canary Islands being considered too. I would like to see some feedback from others on this forum, and that have a true interest in going. I would hope the IPS board will take in all considerations after hearing some of us give our thoughts and comments. As for me, I think g…

Split rachis
by Brian_K- 4 replies
My cat palm has been putting out new leaves, no problems there. But the rachis is split vertically part way down. So instead of a single rachis with a regular feather appearance there is a second set of pinnae. I thought maybe its just another spear growing out at the same time, but they are fused together. The rachis is unusually thick as well. Not all of the new leaves are forked. None of the older leaves are. Could this just be stress?

Need help with fresh seeds...
by Jeff in St Pete- 8 replies
I picked about 100 ripe C renda seeds yesterday and was wondering if anyone has any experience germinating them? There is a blackish skin over the seeds. Should I soak them in water until the skins soften and can be easily removed first? How long until germination? Any advice would be appreciated. C renda was not exactly common in Tampa so this was my first time harvesting fresh seeds. Thanks in advance for any help!

Color and contrast
by bgl- 23 replies

As I walked past a few colorful Pinangas a little while ago, it occurred to me how easily entertained we palm enthusiasts are: just give us some color - a new red frond, or a colorful crownshaft - every now and then, and we're tickled pink. Makes no difference if the same palm produces one red frond after another (which, hopefully, it will!), we're just as thrilled every single time, as if each time happened to be the very first time. Talk about cheap thrills! An investment of $10-15 or so (for a 1 gallon palm) can create immense satisfaction for many years. That's pretty incredible! Here are a few shots from our garden, all taken this afternoon. First, a happy, and ver…

Bismarckia in trouble?
by PalmaeNoob- 20 replies

I recently planted two queen palms ~20ft (one on each side of my Bismarck) and noticed they r now providing - filtered light to my Bizzie. My Bizzie is about 4ft tall w/ silver-blue leaves- 3 new spears. Will my Biz lose its color? will it stop/slow its growth considerably? It used to get full sun for about 10 hrs. Now I estimate it might only get 2-4 hrs max of sun? What should I do?

I picked up a 7g Ptychosperma elegans triple at Wal-Mart last night for $40. I read the freeze damage forum and see that they withsood temperatures that I can see around here on a regular basis in the SoCal freeze. Anyone have any experience in North or Central Florida? I keep trying to post a pic, which I've done several times before, but I'm not having any luck. I've resized it several times too. I'll try again later.

P. canariensis on Pt. Loma
by quaman58- 5 replies
Hey all, Several months ago I posted some pics of the "new" lighthouse area of Pt. Loma. ("New" being from 1890 or so) Anyway, it's a restricted area with 3 "lightkeepers" houses, which now serve as Coast Guard officer housing. My older son plays soccer, and one of his mates has lived here for several years with his family. Soccer parties have gone from a chore to a "must go"event. Unbelievably beautiful place, lots of old P. canariensis around the area.... This particular day had probably the best, cleanest waves of this Spring. Fun on a swing tied to a coastal Cypress, (I think). I asked the little girl on it if she ever got tired being somewhat removed from…

Butia capita

I took a trip to pickup my girlfriend this weekend in Savanna, GA... While there we hung around some of the squares and coffee shops downtown. She was interested in the trinkets and goodies in the stores... I found myself drawn to the Butia, Sabal, and Trithrinax, and Washies... The Washies were a bit yellowed from cold it appeared, but some were flourishing... I had always kind of turned my nose up in palm snobbery at Butia sp. but after seeing some that were well grown and old I have a new appreciation for a beautiful, rugged, cold hearty palm tree. I wish I had taken more pictures but the weekend was for Christie and not for my palm exploits... Here's a couple p…

Like Dave's, it appears mine is almost gone. Cold did not kill it, but set it up for a nasty infection. Probably Pink Rot. But it continues to push, so I've not had the guts to kill it. No question, it wants to live, but.. Any miracle systemic cures out there? Now would be a good time.... In better days: Morn of Jan. 13 I believe: Today. Note the three day old mark. It's pushed 3/4" or so. Sigh.. Bret

NEEDED: articles for the PSSC Palm Journal
by elHoagie- 9 replies
The Palm Society of Southern California is looking for articles to print in the Palm Journal. The journal publishes a wide range of articles, from scientific to humorous about palms. Most of the articles are from hobbyists, sharing their experiences growing palms. You do not have to be an expert, or even an experienced grower to have your article published. You just need to have palm growing experiences. Even short articles are great, we've printed some that are only a couple paragraphs long. The journal usually focuses on a single genera, or several similar genera. We need articles about Sabal and experiences with the recent freeze ASAP. We'd also like to inc…
