What's the scoop on this butia? Can anyone out there tell me if the one I have is the real thing? *OOOPS...hold that thought...have to get a photo first!* (I'll add the photo later) How large does it get? Is it similar to capitata? Cold tolerance? Growing conditions? Anyone have photos to share? Many thanks.

Building a Wooden Container
by TikiRick- 11 replies

After spending a lot of cash on fancy glazed pots and then they either blow over or crack, I decided to try my attempt at building a nice 4' x 4' x 4' wooden container for a large Carpenteria acuminata. After about $50.00, dressing it up with some tropical accessories, and 3 hours of labor...here it is.

Pushing Up Mushy Spear
by JimR- 7 replies
My bottle palm took some damage last month from some cold winds (temps. got down to about 35F). It is now pushing up a new spear. About 6 in. is showing, but the spear tip (all that is showing) is grey/white and soft to the touch. It seems to still be being pushed up, though. The spear tip feels a little loose, but I do not want to pull too hard on it. Any thought/suggestions.

A view from above

Last week as I was flying from Quepos to San Jose I got a few arial shots of the palm plantations surrounding Quepos. Quepos was a banana town at one time but when the banana blight hit, they replanted with African Oil Palms which has grown into a big industry in this area of Costa Rica. From the air, they look like tiny starbursts. One last shot of just a portion of the plantations.

It makes the room look so great. I take it out every few days, especially if we get a shower, which we haven't had for a while. It's doing fine so far and it gets the afternoon sun because I pull the shears back for it each day. Roger Down by Houston

Home Depot in Glendora
by Neel- 2 replies

The Home Depot by my house has 2 nice looking Bismarks (about 15 gal).......sorry, i'm using the common names.......foxtails and lots of fishtails. I told my girlfriend that the bismarks probably won't look that good if we planted them in the yard. I have never seen HD selling fishtails around here. Is it even worth a try outdoors? The only places I see them is inside shopping malls. I'm betting all these were FL grown b/c they looked very green and healthy!

Palm Infloresence's
by Urban Rainforest- 18 replies

Good things are happening in the garden lately and one of them is four new palms blooming shortly after the freeze we had this winter for the first time. I know some plants are prone to bloom and try and reproduce when severely stressed. Many times when I have transplanted Cycads the first thing that they do is throw a cone. I have also heard of people moving small caryotas and inducing a premature boom. I was wondering if the brutal cold we had this winter could have had a similar response on some of my palms. Has any body else had palms bloom for the first time this spring? This first pic is for Paul who noticed this flower spike emerging on my Bizzie at my last sale a…

Archontophoenix tuckeri
by Walter John- 8 replies
- 1.1k views
I remember reading ages ago that Archontophoenix tuckeri differed from the other Archos with a special lime green appearance at the crownshaft. Until this morning when I took a close look I hadn't noticed much difference. The photos don't do this justice but the green smooth colouring looks particulary beautiful in my opinion. The same smooth green runs up the petioles, really charming, yeh, that's the word I'm looking for, bloody charming palm tis Archontophoenix tuckeri. Anybody else out there growing this wonder ?

Need help to ID 2 Palms

Trunk of smaller palm (3 in a row), is about 3 feet tall. Contained green seeds, about size of golf ball, similar to a much larger Queen palm seed. Second appears to be a hybrid between CIDP and Phoenix Sylvestris. Can anyone help? Thank you. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa245/R...o1/P6070011.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa245/R...o1/P6070007.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa245/R...o1/P6070005.jpg

Looking for a good selection
by John Case- 0 replies

All, I am looking for some help to put a new palm in the garden. Full sun, water available. I would like to not put a Washingtonia or Phoenix in the spot (I already have these). I am in Northern California, Zone 9b. Sunset Zone 14 Hot dry summers cold wet winters. I would like something that most folks would not necessarily try. The spot is close to an inground spa that is heated all winter and has a waterfall, so that some humidity can be provided. Any ideas? Thanks,

Got a few of these at work , and very surprised that not a one has sold since I got them in . One has just put out a excellent looking large new leaf without one of the older leaves turning yellow . This makes for 5 leaves held on the plant , 2 others have 4 leaves and one has 3 . These are in 8" pots and stand approx 1m high . price is Au. $30 , not to high I think . btw , not trying to sell these plants here , just commenting on the number of leaves .

My first post-- help!
by Marti- 16 replies

Could this be palm leafskeletonizer which I hear has hit California? Or the grasshoppers that munch on the ornamentals that sit below this tree (do grasshoppers even like palms)? Or something totally different? I also wonder if the brown leaf edges are a precursor to the leaf's disapperance, or if the brown is just a product of the hot, dry Santa Ana winds.

Palms planted in unusual places 1 2
by bgl- 47 replies

This is a Hydriastele beguinii (formerly Siphokentia beguinii). It was planted in 1998 from a 1G pot on top the rootball of a fallen ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha) tree, a native Hawaiian tree. The orchids are right on top the rootball as well, which has been ripped out of the ground and is at a 45 degree angle. The two ohi'a trunks can be seen diagonally up towards the right side of the photo. The ohi'a tree fell more than ten years ago, and is still doing fine, despite having its rootball completely exposed! And the H. beguinii is doing fine as well. The fan palm in the background is a Kerriodoxa elegans. Anyone else with palms planted in strange places?

Bought this palm under the name Cyrtostachys elegans, but not so sure now. C. elegans is supposed to be multitrunked and this specimen is solitary (but I'm sure it's a Cyrtostachys!)

Howdyall: Two Caryotas at my infamous Death Camp received serious insults by sharp blades at different times. Below is a C. Mitis where I cut off a center stem that I thought was dead. Wrong! Note the new truncated spear pushing up. Shoe's a size 12, 12" (30 cm) long.

Hey all, This morning I noticed small scales on my one of my Hedyscepes. It sits underneath a banana tree in the shade. The past weeks have been foggy and I am not sure if this contributed to the problem. I appreciate all advice. Thanks
