Archontophoenix tuckeri
by Walter John- 8 replies
- 1.1k views
I remember reading ages ago that Archontophoenix tuckeri differed from the other Archos with a special lime green appearance at the crownshaft. Until this morning when I took a close look I hadn't noticed much difference. The photos don't do this justice but the green smooth colouring looks particulary beautiful in my opinion. The same smooth green runs up the petioles, really charming, yeh, that's the word I'm looking for, bloody charming palm tis Archontophoenix tuckeri. Anybody else out there growing this wonder ?

Trunk of smaller palm (3 in a row), is about 3 feet tall. Contained green seeds, about size of golf ball, similar to a much larger Queen palm seed. Second appears to be a hybrid between CIDP and Phoenix Sylvestris. Can anyone help? Thank you. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa245/R...o1/P6070011.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa245/R...o1/P6070007.jpg http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa245/R...o1/P6070005.jpg

Looking for a good selection
by John Case- 0 replies

All, I am looking for some help to put a new palm in the garden. Full sun, water available. I would like to not put a Washingtonia or Phoenix in the spot (I already have these). I am in Northern California, Zone 9b. Sunset Zone 14 Hot dry summers cold wet winters. I would like something that most folks would not necessarily try. The spot is close to an inground spa that is heated all winter and has a waterfall, so that some humidity can be provided. Any ideas? Thanks,

Got a few of these at work , and very surprised that not a one has sold since I got them in . One has just put out a excellent looking large new leaf without one of the older leaves turning yellow . This makes for 5 leaves held on the plant , 2 others have 4 leaves and one has 3 . These are in 8" pots and stand approx 1m high . price is Au. $30 , not to high I think . btw , not trying to sell these plants here , just commenting on the number of leaves .

My first post-- help!
by Marti- 16 replies

Could this be palm leafskeletonizer which I hear has hit California? Or the grasshoppers that munch on the ornamentals that sit below this tree (do grasshoppers even like palms)? Or something totally different? I also wonder if the brown leaf edges are a precursor to the leaf's disapperance, or if the brown is just a product of the hot, dry Santa Ana winds.

Palms planted in unusual places 1 2
by bgl- 47 replies

This is a Hydriastele beguinii (formerly Siphokentia beguinii). It was planted in 1998 from a 1G pot on top the rootball of a fallen ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha) tree, a native Hawaiian tree. The orchids are right on top the rootball as well, which has been ripped out of the ground and is at a 45 degree angle. The two ohi'a trunks can be seen diagonally up towards the right side of the photo. The ohi'a tree fell more than ten years ago, and is still doing fine, despite having its rootball completely exposed! And the H. beguinii is doing fine as well. The fan palm in the background is a Kerriodoxa elegans. Anyone else with palms planted in strange places?

Bought this palm under the name Cyrtostachys elegans, but not so sure now. C. elegans is supposed to be multitrunked and this specimen is solitary (but I'm sure it's a Cyrtostachys!)

Howdyall: Two Caryotas at my infamous Death Camp received serious insults by sharp blades at different times. Below is a C. Mitis where I cut off a center stem that I thought was dead. Wrong! Note the new truncated spear pushing up. Shoe's a size 12, 12" (30 cm) long.

Well, June 1 is the official start of Hurricane Season here. Sure enough, a tropical storm is soaking areas of our state that have been mostly in drought for two months. I wonder how other Floridians are enjoying the rain?

What causes a Licuala (or any palm for that matter) to become a pale green color? Can it be corrected and how? Licualas do this to me all the time. Could it be hard water? Thanks, Ray

Hey all, This morning I noticed small scales on my one of my Hedyscepes. It sits underneath a banana tree in the shade. The past weeks have been foggy and I am not sure if this contributed to the problem. I appreciate all advice. Thanks

Freakish hybrids
by cfkingfish- 25 replies

Here is a hybrid, the mother is a Syagrus x costae, and the father is a Butia. The seed came off a Syagrus x costae and the seed is incredibly nasty and tough. The fruit was virtually uncleanable and the exocarp was so thick I never thought a cotyledon could break through. A few of these popped up, however. Here is one: I also have germinating seeds where the mother is a Syagrus cearensis and the father is a Butyagrus. Possibly a clumping Mule? ???

I bought these two as Dypsis pinnatifrons, but I know a few other species can look generally similar. As there are many Dypsis experts on this forum I was wonderig what the general opinion is on it. Are they pinnatifrons? What do ya reckon? Best regards Tyrone

New Queen
by Bilbo- 0 replies

My friend Pete visited the other day and remarked on the good extension of my Queen - he hadnt paid one of his usual visits for nearly a year. I knew it was larger but I hadnt realised how much apparently. The guy by the way is a Master of Arboriculture and can figure the height of any tree at a glance - and yes - he is that good indeed. Looking at it everyday I hadnt quite realised the actual growth rate. How? Good irrigation and real high Nitrate! I suspect all the commercial guys out there and many others are also well aware . . . That fact is not in Bob and Pablos book which is perfectly fair enough as it is just meant to be about Palms and was NOT meant to dis…

A royal problem
by Don Little- 7 replies

Both of my cubans were defoiliated from the freeze slash dry winds we had this year but subsequently although they look terrible they have both pushed out spears and opened prematurely I assumed to get the photosynthesis going. I've been treating them with daconil because I been paranoid about all this talk about pink rot as of late, even though posts have indicated that it doesn't get rid of it. When I was peeling back but not removing a leave base that has browned quite a bit I noticed a kind of whiteish chalky substance on them but not convinced that it is pink. Upon further inspection the other day I peeled some back and noticed these very tiny white specs (and I d…

Nitrogen loving palms-what product to use
by wendisplantation- 9 replies
- 2.5k views
Hi Everyone- some questions: 1. Can you all tell me which types of plams are nitrogen lovers, other than Queens? 2. What do I use to give them extra N? And should I use it along with the Palm specific granular, or in place of? 3. will the extra N throw off the other nutrient levels, and if so, then what? 4. What does the extra N do for the palms? 5. Also, does anyone use Chelated Palm Nutrition, and is that more of a quick fix for major deficiencies, or what? I have some of this that I use a couple times per year on stuff that is a few years old, but should I be using it only if they are showing signs of major nutritional deficiencies? And, is it ok to gi…

How many palms have you killed?
by NorCalWill- 29 replies

I've really gotten better with this...now I only grow palms that are proven to survive in my climate zone. I don't have time to try to keep something alive that can't do it on its own (this goes for all plants, not just palms). In the early days of my palm collecting however, things were a little different. I was easily tempted to try growing a palm that I would see at a nursery and knew very little about. My back yard soon became a plant cemetary. Here is a list of the deceased members of my palm collection. They were all grown outside with as much Winter protection that I could provide for them. Some were left out with minimal protection in order to see how hardy…

SLOWER than mollasses...

Palmophiles, I have a 3 gallon (about 24" tall) Pseudophoneix vinifera in the ground for about 3 years. I know it is very slow, but it has only put out about 3 new fronds in all this time! Hell, I will be (more) ancient to see it form a trunk! It is heavily mulched and planted out in an area which gets sun from about 11am to sunset. Any experiences with this palm...anyone? anyone?

Weekend Bargains in Houston
by palmsrgreat- 4 replies

This weekend I picked up two pretty decent size trees for a nominal cost. The chain of Houston Garden Centers in having their usual 50% off, which eventually goes to 75% off in late summer. I got a 20 gal CIDP for 50 bucks and a 25 gal Pindo for 80 bucks. They had about 4 huge overgrown 45 gal Spindle palms for 150, which would be a sure death here. Large Royals for 200. The CIDP, after repotting...
