One advantage to locally sourced seeds is a far better germination rate than imported seeds for obvious reasons. If imported seed had a better germination rate then the cost would drop dramatically, unfortunately it’s a living cell that only has a certain amount of viability. In Australia a lot of the exotic varieties are not seeding in great numbers or it will take a lot more years before they will seed and even then no guarantee that we will have the right conditions, they may flower but not set seed. One lone female is not going to set seeds in a hurry with just one single plant in a garden. Seed supply is the critical factor and the availability of good quality seed is sourced locally, and you know it will grow well in your climate. You may get the seeds have great germination rates and have the first winter kill them all. That hurts even more with rare palms.

i checked and its wet but not soaking wet. it did just rain about half an inch 2 days ago

You know it when you see variegation. Vertical stripes is more what you see. What you’re seeing is the nutrient deficiency as the leaf has growth spurts.

It does take the cool, but even slower in the cool. And yes frost would turn it to mush.

No I think it will be ok if you just used mainly native soil, check whether it is staying too dry

IMO, appears to be some random, errant growth ...Something i've seen pop out from otherwise healthy plants occasionally. Looking at the last shot, you can see how it is already starting down the path to it's own demise, ...Most likely outcome at least... via older leaves at about the 3 o' clock position in the picture starting to brown out.. That will continue until whatever amount of energy it has left in that growth is exhausted.

Dig down in the soil six inches deep or so, about 12 inches away from the trunk and see if the soil is chronically wet or dry. Observe whether the roots look a healthy, white solid color or if they’re mushy and darker black or dark gray, which is bad. Also check and make sure you didn’t create a bathtub effect by putting in potting soil or some sort of loose soil when you dug the hole initially. The reason it’s attempted is due to the numerous microclimates in California. If you live 10-15 miles or more inland and you see limited or no frosts then it might be worth a try because you get more consistent heat and this especially true in winter often 80s in the day mid winter. Last year mid March I hit 96 with weeks of 80+ after that. Along the immediate coast is too consistently cold in the winter because of California’s famously cool water bringing day time temps near the immediate coast often in the low 60s in the day and cloudy often. The lack of heat. I’m trying it because I live inland in Fallbrook with enough heat to try it even if winter nights are cool. In Fallbrook we can grow coffee & dwarf cavendish especially dwarf cavendish which requires a lot of heat and plantains persisting for years without freezing.

i’ve had this palm in the ground for around a year. it’s been fine up until last night when noticed the top 5 fronds were folded. i tested the ph and it read 7, the spear is intact fully, and the trunk is solid all around. we’ve had quite a bit of rain here but nothing we haven’t seen before. it’s still quite warm so it’s not like it’s staying wet (to my knowledge). i planted it on a mound too because this area has issues with drainage sometimes. it’s on a southeast facing wall. i just want to know what the problem could be and what i can do to fix it.

After ..years.. of seeing it marketed, on store shelves, etc, intrigued that there is still a demand for it since many legit studies into Saw Palmetto's effectiveness are highly questionable / uncertain. ..At least with other herbal things, like Ginsing, and / or Senna ( Usually Senna alata ..or Cassia fistula extracts ) there is ..pretty certain.. ( ...I'll leave some room for reasonable questioning of either plant's " benefits" ) evidence of each supplement's positive effectiveness.

After back to back cones on my female Encephalartos whitlockii x sclavoi, I wasn't expecting a flush this late in the season. I was walking past it this morning and was pleasantly surprised though.

Agreed. Here, they are as fast as Archontophoenix cunninghamiana if the starting line is from the beginning of trunking. My tallest was planting either at the end of 2010 or beginning of 2011 from a 7 gallon pot. I didn't find planting photos, but I did find a photo from about 3 years after planting it as we began demolition for a remodel and addition to the house. The updated photos are best taken from the street outside our yard, since I can't get good photos of it now without other palms in the foreground blocking a significant portion of it. The only thing faster to get tall in my yard has been the Chrysalidocarpus leptocheilos and pembanus. I found one more photo of the Chambeyronia (Kentiopsis) oliviformis from the outside of the garden in late 2014, with the tips of the leaves just barely visible from the street from a similar perspective to one of my current photos of it.

Good day all, has anyone in this forum seen anything like this. This is a spathodea campanulata with new growth on a cut limb that is growing back with completely white leaves. They're healthy, not fried out , not mildew and able to endure full sun with no burning. Leaf shape and size appars stunted, mutated growing directly out of the trunk where a new shoot was cut off. This is not a different plant growing from the earth or between roots, it is growing straight out of solid wood that has green growth 3 feet away. It's very unusual and I'm curious if anyone has seen anything like this. Zone 10 a , Iona, Florida. Thanks for your time.

Thanks! Admittedly they're not easy to photograph, due to the fact that they're usually mixed into densely planted areas. I've been curious to see how their growth habit will be. I got one and planted it in I think will be a good spot.

Brassia Edvah Loo 'Nishida' HCC/AM/AOS. And I thought this wasn’t going to bloom this year because it was so late. The July heat and humidity must have sparked it. Continuing all the way into Aug Sept. Such a nice vanilla-like fragrance too.
