I posted this Pinanga picture in the what caught your eye thread, but it really belongs in a color thread.

Interesting varieties I'm going to try... Pandan Wangi is an awesome looking dwarf from Thailand. Also Kelapa Gading looks interesting...called Ivory Coconut as the nuts are ivory coloured.

Looks great. I wish some of those species were more widely available. I'm just waiting for Floribunda to have enough things I want at one time to justify placing an order.

Yep. Fresh seed makes all the difference. I have a batch of about 40 of these going myself. Now, it's just a matter of time to get them up to my preferable 5 gallon selling size. 😄🌴 aztropic Mesa, Arizona

A very humid 28C / 82F here at 2:30pm. Cooler than yesterday, but it is the calm before the (heat) storm. I am expecting anything from 36-41C / 97F - 106F next week. Anytime from Tuesday - Friday could be the hottest day depending on when the airmass peaks. Tuesday or Wednesday looks the hottest but some models have Friday as the hottest. Met Office staying grounded on heat potential, for now anyway. Although it still shows a week straight of tropical nights as it stands… ARPEGE has trended even hotter and now shows 40C / 104F on Tuesday… 🥵

Not sure I’d call him a nursery, but Joe Palma has a pretty good selection for a “backyard “ guy. Btw, some desert guys have had great luck with Medemia, which has become easier to find and is surprisingly fast growing. Loves heat.

Images of palms in Dallas after 3F and 9 consecutive days below freezing in 2021. The L. Chinensis had gotten huge trunks over the past two decades but this winter took them out.

For a couple of frost protection nights the Mr. Heater 60k BTU will work but it burns propane fast, is loud, and needs supervision so it's not ideal for overnight unattended use. More practical options are a smaller Mr. Heater Buddy for targeted spot heating, heat tape for pipe protection, or honestly just running a box fan overnight to disrupt the cold air pooling in your low spot. Radiational cooling is all about still air settling downhill and even a little air movement can prevent a frost better than a heater in some cases. If you go forced air stock at least two 20lb propane tanks so you're not caught short mid night.

At that size it could be many things. Was the seed still in the pot when you acquired the seedling? That might assist in identifying it. I too would guess it is likely from the Encephalartos genus but I have been surprised that some young Dioons and Macrozamia can appear similar in photographs at this size. Did the party you acquired it from provide any clues or identification?

Good luck, get a vision of what you’re after and in time it becomes clear. That’s what I did some odd 30 years ago!
