Unfortunately, I don’t have a shady spot in the ground for it.😞. It will have to stay in a big pot for now. 😎

Great overview. I think a lot of people overlook Licuala because they assume they're difficult or ultra-tropical, but many species are surprisingly adaptable once you understand their water and drainage requirements. The diversity within the genus is what really makes them addictive-one plant can have almost perfectly circular leaves while another looks completely different. I also agree that their relatively slow growth makes them excellent candidates for greenhouse collections, where space is always at a premium. They're definitely a genus that deserves more attention from palm growers.

That's impressive. Iguanura isn't a genus most people would think of when talking about cold tolerance, so it's always interesting to hear real-world experiences that challenge the conventional wisdom. It sounds like the key was figuring out their moisture requirements some palms will forgive a dry spell, but others really let you know when they're unhappy. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's useful information for anyone experimenting with less common species. For people trying to identify unusual palms or compare species I have found https://botanapp.com/identifier/palms to be a great palm tree identifier.

This is the last palm that caught my eye at my Palm Society friend who lives a few miles from me. It’s a nine year old Licuala ramsayi. It may be getting a little too much sun.

Another palm from my Palm Society friend who lives a few miles from me. He’s not sure what Pritchardia species it is, but the trunk looks typical of P. minor. R

This caught my eye at my friend’s house. He says it’s Coccothrinax barbadensis. It’s an 8 or 9 year old plant from a gallon. I remember when it was very small and it’s grown very fast.

Once the newbies get up and growing then it’s time for the other ornamentals. About 5 years and a few more shrubs and trees on the outskirts of the garden should do the trick. Richard

I get quite dry summers and very hot north west winds, you most certainly don’t want to light a fire those days living in the Australian. They do tolerate some dry atmosphere. Definitely create as much humidity as you can it helps regardless of the conditions in your climate. But in the ground not a lot of dry tips but my humidity rarely drops below 60 percent. Just add shade and water and they should improve with age.

do these require super high humidity ? I have one in the garden. The lighting is a mixture of bright shade part of day & filtered light. It's under canopy. I water it well but noticed the tips can brown easily. The palm is still small though. Thinking it was an acclimation issue since it came from Florida ( I'm in California where its more dry but the microclimate it's in, I try to boost humidity with watering often). Have you found them to brown tip easily ? Or maybe it's when they are just juvenile ?

Funny enough I found an excellent nursery about 80 miles away, they have a wide variety of somewhat rare palms. Im not necessarily interested in becoming a collector and obtaining the rarest palms in cultivation, but like many I prefer palms that aren’t the typical big box store palms. I would agree to research diligently if you want to be a collector. But there’s plenty of nurseries that carry common exotic palms like various Dypsis, chamadoreas, etc. I think the reason why these uber rare collectors palm nurseries go out of business is there’s simply not a huge demand. The hardcore collectors would rather collect seeds and exchange them with other hardcore collectors. But there are middle ground nurseries that are very successful.

I appreciate the concern about it being planted too close, but a majesty would be toast if it were planted open yard here. When I recorded 27f by the house it was 20f open yard… The temp drops quick as you move away from a house.

@Austinpalm I think I was able to replicate the login that was failing. The logon screen was a WordPress login and wouldn't be our IPS account credentials. This is probably the screen you're referring to: I did find a way to have some success. Try this and let me know if it works. Type a year in the Search textbox and press Enter. The page will spin for a little bit and then bring up some search results. If you want to keep the results up, right-click an archived journal link and select Open link in new tab. On the tab that opens, you should be able to read or download the issue. Hope this works for you.

I can't tell the size. Is it a Cicada Wasp?

Am going to the page with the latest journal issues. I am able to open or look at the various issues on that page and download various articles. What I cannot do is a search for one of the archived journals. Basically, anything prior to late 2024. I type in a search topic, and nothing happens. I enter a volume number and them am told that I need to click on a link to the archived journals. Then am told that I need to sign in. When I enter my username/password which has already been accepted, I am told that my username/password is not good. So I am unable to look at any of the journals from before Oct/Nov 2024 or so.

I miss rainy season. I too hope this isnt the new normal, but have seen climate projections suggesting we will get closer to an arid Cuba climate in the future. It seems like we cant win, either la nina brings freezes and dry winters, or el nino brings hot dry summers (at least early) and wetter winters that are less useful for the garden. Gardening anywhere has challenges, but it seems like Florida hates us on the west coast again this year. Up to 7 days this summer at 80 for the low temp and upper 90s mulitple times, both more than typical for here. After 12 freezes this past winter, and the heat now, Florida is making the case for desert style landscapes in the future. Im going that route anyway for much of my front yard, outside natives that hopefully do well.
  27. SCVpalmenthusiast
Becarriopheonix handles the desert, many folks here in AZ have Royal palms they thrive in heat.
