How to get involved
by NC_Palms- 4 followers

Hello everybody! I have been a long term member of the IPS and Palmtalk and I really think this is an incredible organization, and I have been wondering how I can do more as a member. I live in areas where it’s difficult to get involved with local chapters, but are there other ways I could volunteer for the IPS through volunteering roles I could do from online? Again I really love the IPS and as someone who studies biology with a focus in tropical horticulture I believe a lot of my goals align with the IPS and I genuinely believe it to be a wonderful organization that I would love to get involved with!

Palm Sunday Tour of the Morningside Park Palmetum
by Elvis Cruz- 1 follower

Sunday, April 13, 2025, Palm Sunday, found a group of female Scouts touring the Morningside Park Palmetum in Miami, Florida. This three-acre palmetum (palm garden) has been part of Morningside Park's original design since it opened in 1953. In recent years it has been greatly improved by volunteers, now home to approximately 200 palms, with 125 different species. Unfortunately, the City of Miami has drawn up plans to get rid of the palmetum. Whether that will actually happen remains to be seen, as the political saga is ongoing.

Data base for the Journal
by Phoenikakias- 2 replies

I am a recent IPS member and admittedly the IPS journal 'Palms' (Principes) is a treasure of information, especially articles of local botanists on their native flora are very interesting. Just to mention a couple of them as examples, one on Arenga in Thailand and another on Guihaia in China. To my disappointment though I found out that an electronic index in the form of data base is available only for a small part of journal, all old b/w issues and most of the colorful ones are still missing from the index, and a reader searching for a particular topic, has to scroll through the individual index of each one of the older issues (after the whole issue is downloaded in pd…

Merchandise/Book Store

Hello! I used to see in the past that there were T-shirts, hats and such available on the Palms.org website. But now, that section seems to be gone. I was wondering if there are any leftovers somewhere, like the bumper sticker or License Plate frame. I would love to actually have one. This is a longshot, but would love to represent and show my support where I live. Thank you! Brian

Can't receive paper journal
by LeonardHolmes- 3 replies

I received an email asking for my mailing address for the paper copy of Palms. I had let this lapse once in the past. I can't reply to the email and I'm unable to login to the mail website. Any suggestions for getting my address to the "Powers that Be" at IPS? Thanks! Leonard Holmes

Local affiliate chapters

Can anybody recommend where to find my closest chapter? Or contact methods if you happen to know where it is? I realize it will likely be a ways distance. I live in Southern Utah, and would like to join in the festivities at some point in time. Vegas? Coachella Valley? Phoenix? thank you.

Affiliates Post

I see the large number of new Affiliates posts, which I think is great. A few questions if I might ask. What defines an affiliate? Is this a contractual relationship? If so, what is in it for IPS, for PT, and for them? Are affiliates bound by the same terms of service as the rest of us? Have they been apprised of, and agreed to that, formally? How can we, the average members help this program to succeed?

As acting Chair of the Endowment committee, I received the following email and with permission from the sender, have printed it below: I am excited to report another outcome resulting from an IPS Endowment Fund Grant (submitted 2006, awarded 2007). This is a living conservation collections guide, published by Botanic Gardens Conservation International. You will see IPS acknowledged on the last page. The guide can be downloaded here: http://www.montgomerybotanical.org/media/Plant.Conservation.Collections.Guide.pdf We have also posted ‘news updates’ about the new publication on both the BGCI and the MBC websites. You can see these here: http://www.bgci.or…

More Changes at PalmTalk
by Ken Johnson- 3 replies
IPS has been working on the business end of PalmTalk for a long time trying to make sure it operates smoothly and efficiently. The moderator had been working during this time trying to iron out a proper business contract. As I understand it a new contract has been drawn up but I have not seen it. Is anyone else curious about seeing it? IPS, as I understand it, now has a more firm grip on PalmTalk and this is a good thing. We want PalmTalk to be secure and in place forever. It may take some time to figure out exactly what we have gotten ourselves into but if we could all understand the contract it may give us some information so we can help if needed. I hope we ca…

The minutes of the last BOD meeting in Peru have been uploaded to the palms.org site. Apologize for the delay, there was some back and forth discussions and I wanted to make sure I was receiving the approved minutes from Susan Hubble, the recording secretary. I'll talk to Dean to see what format is best to upload here. Tim

How Transparency and Collaboration Works with Accountability to the Membership 1. Board publishes issues under consideration with committee and committee chair to which it is assigned, and where to send comments. 2. Board allows a 14 day comment period 3. Committee chooses a solution, sends solution to BOD in the form of a motion. Committee publishes committee notes, non-accepted alternative and proposals, etc. Note - Committee motions generally do not need a second. 4. BOD publishes meeting agenda to the membership 30 days prior to meeting, with all included documentation, such as written proposals, and other documents relating to…

Replacing Jim Cain

Now that Jim Cain got away from us, God rest his soul, how will his seat be filled? Will an appointment be made at the Biennial? Will it be left open until the next election? How is this usually handled and what do the by laws say about it? Inquiring minds want to know.

I confess I was horrified. I realize that I am possibly the newest member of this society and so not a member of long standing or reputation, but I feel compelled to say something. In my career I have worked with a number of commercial and public bodies to develop and execute digital strategies. In many of these cases I have helped draft and deploy terms of service for users/members. I have to say that the ToS on PalmTalk is the most onerous I have ever seen. When we developed the ToS at the BBC, we had armies of lawyers go over our drafts and never did we see anything so bad. The worst portion is this: By posting Contributions to any part of the Websites, or …

Ideas to Boost IPS Membership
by Jerry@TreeZoo- 37 replies
The IPS has been declining in membership for several years. The reasons, I think, are varied. The economy stinks, the internet gives everybody all the palm knowledge they want so no need to contribute money here, younger crowds are more interested in family and careers than palms etc. We all know there is a problem, who has ideas for a solution? I will post my suggestions later, hoping someone will speak first with a better idea than I have in mind.

Tax Deductible Donations?
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

We did our end of the year tax deductible donations the last few days, we had some money earmarked for the IPS, but it doesn't seem possible. I see no info on palms.org for a donation button, and the PalmTalk button has no info about tax deductible donations. Maybe the IPS could put a little effort into making it easier to receive donations in the future. I think it's gonna be too late for us for this year. The money is going to go elsewhere.

The content license I prefer to provide to the IPS
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 7 replies

It would be great if the IPS integrates the creative commons license into the TOS to cover intellectual property that IPS members provide. Any content any member provides to the IPS on PalmTalk should be covered under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode The summary of this license is as follows: The IPS is free to: Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially. The licensor (member) cannot revoke these freedoms as long as the IPS follows the license terms. The ter…

I have received an email this morning from Larry Noblick, Administrative Secretary of the IPS with an attached three page questionnaire, which apparently all who are running for the 2014-2018 term will be asked to fill out. Fair enough. However, the questionnaire contains incorrect information, and potential candidates should know this since this is critical and crucial information. I should add that I have responded to Larry and asked for a corrected questionnaire to be sent out. In the meantime, it would be wise for anyone who is contempleting sending the questionnaire in to be aware of the following statement/question: "Are you aware that participating in the a…

IPS - Non-profit - Tax Write-off

Since IPS is a non-profit I am assuming that dues can be taken as a tax deduction. But what I really want to know is if the trips to the Biennials can be written off, as they are trips to a non-profit board meetings?
