Did any East Central Florida Chambeyronia survive last winter's freeze?
Johnny Palmseed replied to SubTropicRay's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEFrustrating for sure but luckily they didn’t cost me anything. I got them for $10 each as 3 gallons. They sat in pots for a couple years before I finally figured out what to do with them. Unfortunately, after all that time and care…the super mega freeze hits. I had Canaries before but I’m not a big fan of thorny, spiny palms anymore. I have Roebeleniis and I love the look but the clean up is always painful. Another one is my Copernicia Hospita. It’s growing again and looking like a survivor but it’s covered with thorns similar to a rose but with a hook.

Wodyetia bifurcata what makes them do popular
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDELike the Bismarckia palm a victim of its own success, the resorts love them and the big grand Gold Coast high rise buildings they suit them perfectly in that landscape. Very formal palm. No wonder there in the background of everything in those holiday snaps on the Goldie. Let them line up by the thousands at the chain stores for the foxys, because iam not going to grow them and take up my space for them when I can have a thousand marojejya darinii palms! - Today

Wodyetia bifurcata what makes them do popular
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEIt is one of the keys to growing foxtails is drainage, heavy clay soil is not going to grow a good foxtail. Iam quite lucky to have the foxtail native to our country, after all it gave Australia a name in the palm world just like Madagascar is to palms. A well grown one is a beautiful site to behold and only a true palm nut can see that beauty, the rest just see as you say that formal look of a set standard accent setting and the diversity of a shade tree in comparison to a palmtree. The average home owner just wants an easy to care for setting with plants. Maybe mow the lawn and sit back and admire the garden. It’s only the true gardener who knows what they want in palms and it takes many years to learn such things to look for and if the foxtail fits into that category then it’s a winner and this is what they are so popular. -

My beloved kentia palm (howea foresteriana) needs help !!!
happypalms replied to Livia's topic in PALMS IN POTSI agree with @Harry’s Palms however it looks like underwatering and a little lacking in humidity. Try every now and then placing it in the shower giving it a good drink and this will also wash the dust away on the leaves, plants have what is called a stomata which is how they breath through their leaves, tiny microscopic holes, if the stomata are blocked with dust they can’t breathe correctly. Let the top two inchs of soil dry out before the next watering. Ifpossible every ow and then as well place your palm outside in a shaded area for a week or so to give it a spell from being indoors. Good luck. -
Tabebuia
happypalms replied to 96720's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsThe yellow tabuia I take it you have there. They go deciduous in my cool winter. Actually they are super cold tolerant. Fast growing and very pretty in flower. I had to eliminate my ones in the garden, one big mess of seeds by the thousands that germinated every where, and once they get that tap root in they are pretty hard to kill by pulling them out. In the end I had to use a herbicide, with a tap root that’s at least 2 feet long on small seedlings. Very pretty tree but not for my garden anymore. -
Eriobotrya japonica, loquat tree
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsThat’s the one they fit into the tropical look category well. Super tough fast growing and easy to propagate. The one I have I just weeded them out from under the parent tree. A great easy tree and the fruit is quite tasty as well. -
Potting up a few cycad scratchleyana seedlings
happypalms posted a topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsWith winter almost over it’s time for the germinated seedlings to be potted up. I potted up two mid winter and they are doing well so they are showing signs of cool tolerance, being from Papua New Guinea it’s showing good signs for a subtropical climate. Time will tell how good a grower it is! -
Sago Palm removal
happypalms replied to Handson777's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsIt will most likely live, trim of all the leaves and start to dig a trench around it, you don’t really need a great big root ball. But the odds of it surviving are pretty good. -
Chrysophyllum imperiale young container plant
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsThey do have a cold tolerance, the one in Sydney is testament to that, i wouldn’t say blazing white frost but definitely cool tolerant. Indoors is an interesting way to grow one! -

Wodyetia bifurcata what makes them do popular
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI guess in the right setting they are pretty good. The only other palm that has the same look is the Normanbya, given a choice between the two the Normanbya is the winner. A healthy black palm is a real tropical winner of the two. -
Chrysophyllum imperiale young container plant
sbpalms replied to happypalms's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsI have two of these and they're great, pretty carefree. I've been growing mine inside thus far but it seems they have decent cold tolerance as well. -
Wodyetia bifurcata what makes them do popular
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThey were so popular once, now just as common as syagrus romanzifollia, at the start of the foxtail boom it big money and poaching seeds from national parks, in the end they couldn’t control the whole debacle of the seeds and who had foxtails for sale. Now they have become boring in a sense! -
