Chambeyronia has a new burnt tip
by Dimimelbourne- 4 replies

Hey palm pals, my tiny flame thrower was doing pretty well until recently when it started to pop out a spear tip which looked to be burnt. I thought maybe it was from a pest as I know there are quite a few lurking around my patio. I sprayed the palm and have been staying on to of that but the emerging tip hasn’t grown at all in some weeks. I hope it isn’t dead. I repotted it after it seemed to have stunted and that’s when it started pushing out this new spear which seemed like a positive sign. Could it be from the cold? It’s middle of winter here and we have had some cold nights… no freezes though but has been close.

Hiiii!! so this started after I put sulpomag in the soil a few weeks ago. I’ve only given my licuala sulpomag 2x, the first was 1 teaspoon in March and the second was 1 teaspoon in May. After the second teaspoon the palm leaves started turning yellow. I assumed it was fertilizer burn but the weird thing is that despite being watered and it being well over a month since the palm was fertilized, it’s continued to turn yellow. I’ve attached photographs of the yellowing. Any tips on next steps or what the cause might be? Thank you!!

Rhapis excelsa age
by PsyPalm- 5 replies

I recently picked up a rather large Rhapis excelsa from Offerup (deal of the century at $40) and I'm wondering if anyone here has any guesses as to how old it is? It has a ton of beautiful slender trunks and the leaves have way more pinnae than any excelsa I've ever seen. This is the first one I've owned so I was just curious:) Thanks guys!

Satakentia liukiuensis Indoors?
by PsyPalm- 5 replies

Hey guys! An Etsy nursery I've bought from in the past just listed these young Satakentia liukiuensis for sale: https://www.etsy.com/listing/969459303/satakentias-palm?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=lipstick+palm&ref=sr_gallery-1-21&organic_search_click=1&frs=1 I'd never heard of this palm until I saw their listing and I'm thinking about picking one up to grow in my Seattle apartment. I wanted to see if anyone here has had success growing this palm indoors or just people's experience with it in general. It seems like a really stunning palm, at this young age it looks a bit similar to howe…

It’s way too soon to repot this washy, but…..

I had to push this massive radicle back inside! Not wider obviously, but much much deeper? It’s only been in that 10” terracotta since February and I already worried at that time about drowning it (my mix prevented that though) but that radicle now will just keep wrapping around the bottom yeah? Will it take off better or be happier in something like the third pic or will that kill it for sure at this tiny juvenile point? Haha

The grass was just mowed and a bunch of grass clippings and weed seeds ended up in my coconut pot and washie nursery bags, I'm a bit worried about them but that's probably me just overreacting but will they be ok? I took out as many of the grass clipping and seeds that I could see physically and scooped them out but I couldn't get them all 100%

Best sand for potted palms?

I've tried builders sand, play sand, aquarium sand and I do not like them at all except the aquarium sand but it is too expensive. Would pool filter sand be any good? I need a larger coarse grain size that drains well, not sugar grain sized.

Roebellenii with brown fronds
by BeyondTheGarden- 10 replies
It seems like I see this on a lot of Roebellenii grown in pots, but not often on the ones grown in the ground. Is this likely sunburn from a sudden increase in sun exposure, or a symptom of nutrient deficiency? I moved this plant outside this spring, it was in a west facing window with no direct sun, just grow lights prior to that. Now it gets a few hours of direct sun. Also it is in conventional miracle gro potting soil. Should I remove the brown fronds? Thanks.

Good Evening, I have a seed germinating stand going with about 70-80 sabal palmetto seeds. I have 4 that are bout 2 inches high so far. The seeds have been in the seed trays for 1.5 months. They are getting to big for the humidity cover that goes on top of the seed tray. Is it okay to replant? Or should I leave the cover off and let them establish more in the tray? Would a solo cup or similar size be a good step up to replant in? I am assuming once I move them out I can throw them out in the full sun.

Frayed fronds
by Droid- 4 replies
Hello. I'm a new joiner, its been a month or two since then. I haven't tried repotting a palm but I read a couple of articles saying that it can kill the plant. I plotted my palm 5 years ago on soda bottle (1.5L / 50 oz), thinking of slowing its growth but I don't know if I'm just killing it instead. Any suggestions what to do to avoid fraying pronds?

Hey all, I ordered a bunch of archo alex seedlings in the mail and potted them all. They are all under artificial light. Half seem to be doing well and the other half are browning and leaves are getting "crispy" . They are all watered at least once a week. The lights don't heat up and the room is on avg 78 degrees Not sure why half are having issues. Any advice or tips? salvageable or too late? I may need to start over and i want to make sure I get it right if i do.

Help! Dying Golden Palm (I think)
by Hendo- 0 replies
Hi Guys, Looking for some advice, I have what I think is a Golden Palm. Until recently she has been pretty healthy with the normal cycle of dying fronds. But recently rather than browning from the top backwards the have started dying from the stem, so that the leaves are still green but the stem has gone brown and limp. I also have a fungus knat issue but I don’t think that is the problem. Recently moved house which is smaller so she has gone from a prime spot to a less bright bedroom. any ideas??

Pots
by JohnAndSancho- 1 reply

Sooo if I missed something, my apologies. But I haven't seen actual talk about pots here. Open to suggestions and reviews, etc. I'll add links when I'm more functional. Personally, I've got a weird mix of garden pots and self watering pots I found on Amazon, various Bloem products (love Lucca, don't love Ariana) and some super cheap pots I found at Target. For functionality I LOVE the Bloem Lucca since they've got lips that are easy to pick up and move, but it's hard to beat the Target pots. $3 for an 8" pot I can drain if I overwater? Can't beat it.

Hello, I had a brutal war with some fungal infection on this palm and screwed up my original potting mix (too much coir, not enough aeration/drainage additives). I read that clustering palms can grow back from just their stems/trunks, but the content was a little confusing. Anyway, I applied some sulfur treatment and a little later hydrogen peroxide to, in a prior state, give it some emergency oxygen and help fight the fungal infection. To my suprise it started growing again but not faster than the original fronds were dying. I am mostly confident in the new potting mix and that the fungal infection(s) are under control. Assuming this is the case and the roots …

Howea belmoreana Seedling Yellowing
by HtownPalms- 2 followers

I have a question about the health of my Howea belmoreana seedlings. I got these as seeds from a tree in Balboa Park in San Diego in November of 2018. They sprouted in late spring of 2019 and are a little over 2 years old. They have been slow but steady growers. I water them about once every 10-14 days and the sit next to a window with decent sunlight throughout the entire day. I fertilize them with a few granules of Palm gain every 3 months. Unfortunately I have noticed that their new fronds keep opening up paler and paler. I was going to see if anyone could tell me what might be causing this? I'm not sure if it's a sunlight, water, or nutrients?

Opinions on home mixed potting soil
by D. Morrowii- 3 replies
I’ve been trying out some different potting soils for various palms I’m growing. I dont have much experience so I wanted to see if anyone had an opinion on what I’m using. The native soil in my yard is a mixture of coarse sand, sugar sand and coquina shells. I was just mixing 50/50 with store bought MG cactus/palm soil and native. It drains ok but its kind of spongy and probably holds a little too much water. My new mix is: 6 scoops of native 2 scoops of perlite 2 of peat moss 2 of the MG palm stuff and 2 of some bagged up composty, humis, bat guano stuff. Should I add or subtract anything? Change ratios? Thanks!

Leaning towards the sun
by Palm Sundae- 2 replies

Have a few Washingtonia robusta/filibusta started from seed and currently in 5 gallon pots. All of them were potted straight up or very nearly so. They now all lean a little or a lot to the south (towards the sun.) None of my other palms seem to be doing this. Is this normal? Should I try to fix it by turning the pots or will it matter when they go in the ground later this year? Probably not enough time to make much of a difference is what I think. When they go in the ground I'm guessing it is best to try to get them 'straight' again. Are they small enough to where it does not matter? They will be about 24" tall, smallish compared to big box store palms because …

Transplanting root bound Christmas tree palm
by Ricanstructed- 2 replies

Over a year ago I purchased two pots (one pictured) for the single trunk adonidias I finally found yesterday. As a native Puerto Rican, then Florida transplant, these trees are a much much needed taste of home here in my new location in mid Missouri. The home we purchased won me over with the 2 story large "great room" that offers sky lights with plenty of filtered sun for all of my tropicals over winter. These pots flank the fireplace so perfectly and they've just been sitting there empty waiting on these Adonidias to arrive. I am heartbroken to realize they are about an inch or so too wide for the top of the pots. As you can see, they do widen out significantly past t…
