Just curious if any member on here waters their potted palms by sitting them in a container larger than their pot to let the palm absorb water from the bottom up and if it's overall a better way to water at least the palms that aren't to big.

Hi, I have recently started with my first palms, planting from seeds. The plan is to have them potted and indoor as I live a cold climate. I have successfully germinated adonidia merrillii and a few other species. For the adonidias I want to grow a couple of doubles and triplets, but I wonder how far apart seeds should be planted to achieve them all growing up? Is there a minimum distances required or are triplets etc typically created by planting young trees next to each other? Thanks

One of my dypsis has a problem since last year. Some leafs start to dry out from the tips of the leafs into the middle of the leafs. I cut out the affected parts of the leafs which slows down the process. Some leafs have the problem and some don't. I have repotted the palm lately and the roots looked healthy. The palm is my fastest growing dypsis and shows no visible signs of nutrition problems. I can only guess it's a fungus problem? When the oldest leafs start to die the leafs start to show white points before getting yellow. The newest 3 leafs are unaffected so far and I think about cutting all other infected leafs. My Coconut Died :(

Well I guess the predictions came true. My coconut was not able to even survive half way through the winter. My best guess was that it just didn’t get enough warmth for too long to survive. Every 2 weeks a leaf would turn brown and this continued until the plant was no more. Also when I was getting rid of it, the whole plant separated from the nut. Does this sound consistent with a chilly coconut? I also wanted to keep the wooden part of the nut and see what was inside and what’s inside is pretty interesting. RIP Coco 2019-2020

Help please! Below are pics of several different lesions I have noticed on my Carpoxylon. Older leaves seem to be more significantly impacted. I have found several small, ovoid, flat, dark brown to black spots on the leaflets that are easily removed. However, I have also found irregular, black lesions at the base of a few leaflets, and today noticed some sticky, sap-like substance on a few of the leaflet bases/rachis. I am very worried this is a diffuse fungal disease. The Carpoxylon is kept under an overhang due to sun sensitivity. New spear seems to be coming in as expected. Hello! I have a baby Chinese windmill palm being delivered to me this week. I will be putting it in a rather large pot outside. At the moment, I’m leasing my home and don’t own it. We aren’t allowed to plant trees of any size. I live in Chesapeake, Virginia (the greater Virginia Beach region), zone 8A. Will the tree be safe outside during the winter? I see these palms all over the place in Virginia. They seem to be very popular where I live. However, I’ve yet to see one in a pot, most are in the ground and growing quite large! Any tips/advice welcome! :-)

I was reading in the forum different recipes for our palm soil mix. The palmtalkers are using peat moss, perlite, Seramis, veemiculite, pine bark, etc. With different proportions and mixes. Tell us your recipe and its advantages. I am using this soil mix: 50% pine bark, 25% gross peat moss and 25% baked clay. This is my common mix. It has good drainage and air circulation. My palms grows fast and i can water a lot in summer and feed. And in Winter it is not too moist. My pygmy date was in an unheated greenhouse in Salem Oregon zone 8b. The owner of the greenhouse said that they had never had there greenhouse freeze in the past so I decided to overwinter my pygmy date in there this year. Well one night dropped to 19 degrees. It was the coldest I have ever seen it in this area in the 8ish years I've been here. Outside got to 19 but I'm not sure how cold the greenhouse got. All of the leaves on my pygmy date turned brown but the spear didn't pull so I think I can save it. Is there any suggestions on what I can do to help it recover? So one of my Washingtonia robusta started to go yellow and then the edges went brown and it slowly died. Then, two of my other Washingtonia have started to do the same thing a while back, but are still alive. Now, my final healthy one is starting to show the very beginning stages (slight yellowing in the oldest leaf). Hey guys, new around here but wanted to share my indoor setup and get any feedback. I ordered this Christmas Palm online not too long ago. I've been bringing it outside every once in awhile if the weather is nice. Right now it is inside a greenhouse with a [boil] humidifier to keep the humidity around 70-80 about 12 hours a day. I have a Black Magic grow light above on a 12 hour timer to supplement a bit of extra light. There's also a small personal fan in there to help circulate air. I have noticed despite my efforts on humidity, the tips are still turning brown. Could this be from a delayed response to shipping? I am curious if you guys think it w…

I just received 4 young Johannesteijsmannia magnifica, 2 leaves, but they just look the same like my altifrons. Is there anything different between magnifica and altifrons in color of leaves, the back of the leaves when they are young , can they be identified in this stage or only when they are older? My Johannesteijsmannia perakensis germinated about 8 month ago with 2 beautiful long leaves and the seed still attached to the palm is still full and heavy ?? Is it possible it has 2 embryo? All the other germinated seeds are all empty and lightweight. You can really tell the difference. Is that a possibility and if should I leave it like it is or detach it and try to germinate it again?
