Its been a few weeks since i checked up on these and was pleasantly surprised to see a few had germinated. This is my first time germinating this difficult to find species and they are extremely fragile looking and incredibly small. Hopefully a few hundred more will pop up in the next few months. Also included a close up for @Pal Meir

So this palm is not new new, I had it in the ground since Spring. It is a Butia that I am planning to protect and hopefully do a good job doing so since I now have experience getting less cold tolarant palms (to my area) through the winter.

Which palm is hardier, Palmetto or Bermudana?
by Palm crazy- 5 replies

People have tried both here and Bermudana always outlives the Palmetto in the long run. But neither is bulletproof here. Anyone else grows the sabal bermudana in z8 with some success? Have a picture?

How come in the Carolina's tall Sabal's aren't planted? The ones at the nursery are never much more then 12-15 ft tall. The ones that you would imagine have been in the ground for years don't ever seem to be much taller. These trees are pretty cheap for the size of them, yet you never see the tall 30'-35' ones like in FL? Is it the growing season? This is what I'm talking about:

Virginia Sabal Palmetto Seedlings Update
by PalmTreeDude- 8 replies

Here are my Sabal palmetto seedlings that I threw all over my garden from a seed stalk off of a palmetto in North Carolina about two years ago. They survived the first winter (a pretty bad one). Let's see how long these can keep going.

The Swiss Parajubaeas

I decided to create this new topic to be able to document these two Parajubaea's progress. They are planted in the garden of Hotel Brenscino in Brissago (southern Switzerland). One was donated by @maesy and the other one by yours truly. The garden is open to the public (or at least nobody said anything when I walked in) – if you ever go there, it is totally worth checking out. It is very well cared for and boasts a wide array of exotic plants. My little one was planted last year. I was told that last winter was pretty bad for that area and you can see the damage on the older fronds. Can't complain about the view though! Marcel's monster. I …

Hardiness of variegated Rhapis palms
by metalfan- 0 replies

Three years ago I decided to trial some of the large offsets of a colony of variegated Rhapis palms outside here for the winter. Where I live used to be classified as zone 8B but has since moved up in the world to 9A due to climate change. Our winters have been mild. Things were going great the first 2 years and then this past winter we had one surprise freeze where it dos cold enough very quickly that it could have snowed. There was freezing rain instead and a lot of my plants that usually sail through a dry freeze got damaged. Including the variegated rhapis. But it was not killed, so I am hopeful that in the future, all it might need to make it is a frost cloth coverin…

new butia eriospatha- is it doomed?
by LivistonaFan- 5 replies
Hello, after the announced and inevitable death of my Pajubaea TvT I am worried about the state of health of the Butia eriospatha I received yesterday. By looking at the photos you can see that at least the older fronds aren't full-sun-grown but I can tolerate that ( I will acclimatize it in light shade). The roots were very tight in the pot so I had to cut the pot into pieces. Most of the roots were very brownish and I could only detect one white tip. Please tell me what you think of it so that I can decide whether I will complain at the nursery or not. Here are the photos of the palm: :

Butyagrus

First off. I'm new to palms, so handle with care. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way I have recently purchased a few xButyagrus (mule palms) that are small straps. One had a bit of a mishap and pretty much bent in half, I held it up with a small piece of bamboo and string but noticed a bulge forming within a few days, I gave the newest spear a tug and out it came. Figured if it's going to make it, it will. Yesterday I noticed what appears to be a curmpled up spear attempting to work it way out. Is there anything I can do to help the little guy or should I just let it be? Mind you this palm has the diameter of a ticonderoga no. 2

Mediterranean Fan Palm Survived With No Protection

I did not protect my Mediterranean Fan Palm at all this past winter (which was a really bad one here) and none of the suckers died. The middle trunk died the first winter I had it a few years ago. I just now got the idea to post a picture of it so here they are.

Three palms that don't want to grow
by LivistonaFan- 1 follower

Hello, I have three Palms which do concern me. I didn't want to bother yout by opening three new topics, so I will concentrate all in one topic. My first palm (one of three Trachycarpus I planted in the yard) is a T.fortunei. It was maybe 20 years in a pot and because it survived the winter two years ago outside unprotected in a big pot, I decided to plant it out. But it had probably a deficiency and all the older fronds turned yellow. Its first winter was quite severe and although being protected it spear-pulled three times in spring. Now there is another spear in development. Should I help it by cutting the top of the palm around the spear? My nex…

Palms on the way to Yosemite
by Josue Diaz- 2 replies
I travel to and from Yosemite quite often, and I always see these palms at a Mexican restaurant, but I've never made it a point to snap any photos until yesterday. These are in Oakhurst - actually a bit above Oakhurst, at around 3000 feet from sea level and only 13 miles from the entrance to Yosemite National Park and the groves of Giant Sequoias. Oakhust is listed as including zones 6b, 7a, 7b, 8a, 8b, 9a and 9b. I'm not exactly sure what the distribution of each zone is or which zone these palms are growing in, but Oakhurst gets a lot of snow each year. Hope you enjoy! Lots of washingtonia, chamaerops, trachycarpus, a butia or two, and several great-looking braheas…

Sabal minor 'Arkansas' Seedling
by PalmTreeDude- 23 replies

So I ordered these Sabal minor seeds a long time ago and used the baggy method. The only thing was the area they were in was cool, so only one of the 5 seeds germinated so far. The ones that did not were put into a smaller community pot outside so they will be warm and hopefully I get a few more to germinate. Anyone have any Sabal minor 'Arkansas' they can share? Pictures?

Found cheap rhapidophyllum hystrix!

Found these and almost bought them out! With tax it was more than acceptable price for these hard to find palms. Going to be planting some back bones for my garden with these when I get back home and might grab some more when I come back! They also had a good mess of southern yellow pines that I might get as well if they have longleaf. Going to make a groove of slash longleaf and loblooly with needles minors and yuccas sprinkled in. Anyways I know they are boring around here, but nice to finally start sourcing these for my projects and wife was happy to hear they won't need protection lol.
