I like this form. Very nice! :greenthumb:

Hesperia,Southern CA (High Desert area). Zone 8b

Elevation; about 3600 ft.

Lowest temp. I can expect each year 19/20*f lowest since I've been growing palms *13(2007) Hottest temp. Each year *106

I think it would be cool if they made mule palms with strictor instead. I have always been a fan of upright leaves on palms =)

On the left and right side these are Butia odorata 'strictor x Syagrus romanzoffiana (standard Butia odorata in the middle):

I bought them a little over a year ago from a Spanish nursery.  Right from the start, one palm was a little more compact than the other, but the difference has now become much more pronounced.  They got the exact same treatment (soil, pot size, sun exposure) from the get-go. Is the 'strictor variation some kind of mutation like 'lisa for Sabals and only a certain percentage of the F1 generation inherits the trait?

"standard" looking mule palm:

I will plant them in a few weeks and maybe post occasional updates👍.

What's your location ? At that size unless you were in say 9b minimum I might give them another year to grow up. Almost all butia hybrids gain significant hardiness the thicker they get. If your palms show the strictor gene I'll be extremely jealous !

I am in the western Province of Imperia, Liguria (Italy, but quite close to France and Monaco). Cold should not be a problem in normal years (we have much less climatic variance between years than you guys in Texas — it's more like NorCal/ southern Oregon but with warmer summer nights (70°F average for July/August)). If you look at my garden thread you can see I planted a similar sized Butia archerii (or maybe Butia paraguayensis) x Syagrus romanzoffiana 3 years ago, and it is quite happy since.

Just a little extra information: It is actually a Butia odorata 'strictor x Syagrus romanzoffiana 'Santa Catarina

Thanks for sharing the specifics I would LOVE a “Strictor Mule” that is compact (Dwarf Fan)!!! Please keep us updated with future pics!

Here is a pic of my ‘standard Mule’ from Scott W here on PalmTalk.

It has been growing in shaded/dappled sunlight and looks very similar at this stage of development to your ‘standard Mule’.

I can already tell that the compactness of your ‘Strictor Mule’ will be absolutely remarkable at maturity! It reminds me of the fronds on a var. ‘Vulcano’  (also probably a genetic mutation) vs. standard Chamaerops humilis.

*Chamaerops humilis ‘standard’ upper Left Chamaerops humilis var. ‘Vulcano’ lower Right.

This seems like the perfect hybrid for my area, very jealous. Who created this gem ?

Great, that will soon be an outstandingly beautiful specimen. Unfortunately, my  'vulcano was mowed down by a gardener with a brush cutter and therefore has a lot of basal shoots.

Back to your statement: I would be very pleased to see a hybrid as compact as the Chamaerops volcano compared to the standard form. I had hoped for such a result with my Butia archerii / paraguayensis x Syagrus romanzoffiana, but it will probably grow larger than expected and has fairly horizontal leaves. Another great compact palm is the Ravenea glauca 'andringitra: this one totally surprised me with its tolerance for my climate/winter and also has a miniature effect. However, as a palm from higher altitudes, I don't know how it will cope with the summer months in South Texas.

Apparently it was a Spaniard called Antonio Martinez who sold the palms directly via Facebook and also gave them to local palm tree nurseries (where I then bought some via their website)

I came across a link from a French palm enthusiast who has also shared photos of the parent palms and keeps track of the progress of his seedlings:

By the way: I am very jealous of the relatively good availability of Dypsis decipiens in the US. As far as I know, no reasonable specimen has been offered in Europe since May 2019 and of course I didn't buy it back then🤐.  Just wait a bit and Patrick Schafer will produce this hybrid too, while I will wait for the next offer of a Dypsis decipiens for all eternity.

I will be waiting on Patric for sure, as I'm a huge fan of his work and customer haha. Actually D.Decipiens isn't that easy to find here where I'm at, unless your west coast or S.Florida this palm is pretty rare.

I have Butia archeri and Butia paraguayensis both flowering.   Hoping to do hybrid crosses with these in the future, and hopefully with using pollen from my Syagrus campylospatha to produce a true Dwarf mule!

^^^ Take my upvote. 😁

I am rooting for your success on that Hybrid! Please put me towards the head of the line when it becomes available Scott. 🙏

They two palms on each side are waaaaay to close to the Mule.  Here's a recent of one of my Mule trunks with my size 11 work boot for reference.
