More rain
by happypalms- 4 replies

As a palm grower I love the rain and we certainly are getting our fair share of it. If 500mm wasn’t enough from the recent cyclone was t enough where in for some more wet days ahead again.

Models are appearing to converge on something like another extreme winter for even the southern states like Texas. As if we didn't have enough the past couple of years! 😭 If current models are correct, the worst should be around the 11th of January (at least for Texas). Although I hope it will all blow over or that it won't get as bad as '21, I am not taking chances. I'll slowly start preparing (I have a large yard with many precious young-ish palms so I can't have the "Oh I'll see what happens 2-days out" - attitude. A few tips I learned from the last few years for my situation: - Act now. Buy frost cloths early. In previous years, these were all sold out. …

Hello everyone! So as a resident of the Athens Riviera I am really puzzled about the true palm potential of south Athens! I mean even in here I have read so many misconceptions on the climate of south Athens (even from Greeks) and coupled with a widespread lack of motivated gardeners in the country that I can not really assess the true palm potential of the Athens Riviera. But I would like to start from what I think I am generally good at: climatology and meteorology. So the Athens Riviera (basically anything south of Nea Smyrni) has a semi-arid climate. Annual rainfall varies from around 330mm in Piraeus to just below 400mm in Nea Smyrni. The mean annual temperature…

Tropical Cyclone Alfred hours away
by Jonathan Haycock- 2 followers

Latest reports suggest Tropical Cyclone Alfred is intensifying and could make landfall as a Category 3. This will put it at wind speeds between 170-224 km/h, which will be devastating for SE Queensland. Brisbane likely to take a direct hit, with areas to the South including Gold Coast getting the worst of it. Major flooding is guaranteed due to high levels of intense rainfall and landfall coinciding with a high tide in the early hours of Friday morning. Coastal residents advised to evacuate. Last Cyclone to hit SE Queensland was 50 years ago. Time to get my rare seedlings off their shelves and in the garage. Got those affected by this, stay safe.

An interesting weather pattern forming
by happypalms- 4 replies

A cyclone is forming of the coast of southern Queensland. It will be interesting to see where heads south. And if it does we will get some good rainfall. If it forms into an east coast low it will get rather wet. Good news for the palm growers.

California / Arizona / Southwest Winter 2024 -25 ..and maybe a faint glimmer of hope for later on??: It's all up in the air..
by Silas_Sancona- 19 replies

Was going to hold off for another week for some additional data to come in before posting this years thread but decided that i'll add that in later.. Regardless, time for some thoughts on what the winter ahead for CA and the rest of the Southwestern U.S. might hold this year.. Could it be another wet one? chilly ..or chillier? ..or could the current " dry n' warm " theme playing out thus far this fall hold on thru the shortest months of the year? ..And what about that glimmer i mentioned.. Whatz that about??.. ..As the end of the title says ..It is all, up in the air.. While there are some decent indications the current heatwave we've b…

This upcoming January 14-16th event is looking more and more like the December 2022 event. Although along the coast they are predicting rain, we are forecasted to be dry through then. I’m seeing 17-19°F predicted in Central Texas Monday night, currently, but based on the last few years will assume it will drop further. Dallas may see 12°F or lower.

It's the anniversary of the 1899 Arctic Outbreak. The numbers are comparable to the December 1983 and January 1985 freezes.

I woke up at 3:30 in the morning to go pee, and to get to the bathroom I walked past my weather station console. It was 69F at that time. I just woke up at 7:00 because my alarm went off. It is 43F. That almost 40F temp swing happened in 3 hours.

Peculiarities of the Brownsville Climate
by ahosey01- 0 replies

Since moving here about a year ago, I have really paid close attention to the way that things here are climactically, and I have found things interesting. First - this may be one of Earth's wildest climates in terms of extreme temperature swings when the cold fronts make their way down off the plains. It is the only place that I have been able to find where even the hardier natives are frozen to the ground with some regularity (every 50-100 years). Presumably this could also be true in central FL but I haven't found any conclusive proof that it has happened. Would love to hear from some people who have been there for decades. This includes Lucaena pulvirulenta an…

Does anyone know of a database that shows the history of weather advisories given to a specific location/forecast zone? Im trying to find data for the local zone (coastal pasco county) in terms of freeze warning frequency, frost advisorues, etc. the low i recorded this winter is borderline for a bunch of plants i was hoping to grow, even knowing i was zone pushing a bit. If i can get some perspective on how often it occurs here i can plan better. Covering things repeatedly this winter got trying, especially once i got sick, so planning in advance, or not planting certain plants, is what im trying to do. I think i found one before, but it was difficult to scrub through …

Florida Winter 2024-2025 Low Temperature Screenshots

Am making this thread to post larger amounts of temperature screenshots from this winter. I know someone did this last winter I believe and I didn't want to blow up the other thread with them. Lows throughout Northern/North-Central FL this morning at about 7:15 CST. Following 2 are my area showing the colder temps away from the bayou. My house is in a real cold spot because we hit 25 this morning (but am still south of the road outlined in yellow). Destin microclimate But further east into 30a/Santa Rosa/Grayton Beach coastal microclimate isn't as much as Destin proper. FL peninsula working it's mag…

thermal mass Impact of Common Landscape Materials
by kinzyjr- 2 followers

Overview The purpose of this thread is to record observations of surface temperatures and their change over time under various conditions for common landscape materials. Most of us would assume that the borders and other materials we use to landscape our yards are relatively close in heat capacity, with albedo having an impact for the darker materials. This falls in line with the interest in urban heat islands (UHI), since having some of these materials near small plants may give them a boost overnight if they can hold enough heat. Landscapes with a lot of hardscaping may be able to gain a small advantage, especially if the grower is able to cover the plant in a w…

Apple Averages

Not sure if this is new to all, but it is to me. I found out the iPhone weather app has a nice averages chart. Apparently, it uses average data from 1970. “Monthly averages reflect daily highs and lows since 1970. For example, the January monthly average uses January 1 through January 31 for every year since 1970.“ Here is mine for Santa Ana, CA. I know averages aren’t always our best gauge for what to plant, but it is interesting and helps get the imagination going.

Laguna's Beach Washed Away?
by DoomsDave- 1 follower

Well, things got a bit ugly in one of the prettiest towns here in the Southland. CLICK HERE FOR FULL REPORT LOS ANGELES — Areas just south of Los Angeles — including a tony beach town that saw "rivers coming through" and its main beach washed away — were hardest hit Wednesday by the fiercest of several storms that battered Southern California since Friday. Dozens of homes were hit by mud, at least two people were killed in storm-related car accidents, more evacuations were ordered Wednesday morning, and one rescue involved a man who called from his cell phone as his vehicle filled up with water. Laguna Beach, where homes top $1 million, saw extensive damage a…

Housing developments effect on local temperature?
by HudsonBill- 4 replies

I have been extremely curious on how much a brand new development effects the temperature in the new development. Let's say you had 100 acres of woods and fields and then built 300 houses on it. Would the over night temperature in that development be slightly warmer than before it was developed?
