Hey everyone today record breaking temps here in southern Ontario 95 degrees. I have 8 potted palms outside. The pots are plastic. Question is. Those pots are blazing hot. My sabal palmetto had earthworms on top looking to cool off. Is there a temperature that will cook my palms that are in pots? Or is this just awesome and he roots will be loving this? thanks everyone

I start with two examples of palms which were obviously much too long in too small pots. The first are two Chamaedorea metallica var. pinnata twenty years in 12x12cm plastic pots, and the second is a Syagrus weddelliana four years in a tiny 8x9cm clay pot:

This is the story of the first year of my life. My Father-Mother was born and is still living in Amsterdam. One of these five fruits and seeds, that’s me: Three days later on 6 June 2017 I was born, err … germinated in Kokohum®, err … in a city of Western Germany: After another three days I got my first own home in a clay pot Ø8cm H9cm filled with 2/3 fine pine bark + 1/3 Seramis®:

New potting mix and fertilizer?

Hello everyone, I made a small research on Palmtalk about the potting mix people use and decided that I need to upgrade my growing medium to some decent level. Most of the time, I was using a "palm substrate" mixed with sand, but it was really hard and heavy - as you can see here: I have Brahea, Butia and some other subtropical palms sprouting now, so I realized they need some more mineral substrate. I prepared this mix: LECA (expanded clay) : perlite : pine bark : palm substrate (mostly peat) = 1:1:1:0,5 What do you think about this mix? Anything to improve, add? My other concern is, how is the best way to fertilize, and w…

Could This Hurt a Coconut?
by PalmTreeDude- 4 replies

This may be a stupid question, but it was raining here for a long time and a mushroom is growing out of the actual coconut on my coconut palm, I have pulled it out but I am wondering if this could hurt the palm or if there is a root problem or anything like that. Or is this completely normal if it has been rained on for multiple days straight?

So I was at a nursery, and in the back corner they had this sad Chinese Fan Palm. The nursery sold it to me for about a cheap price of $20, so it was a big bargain. But as you can see, it is very sad. Does anyone have any tips on how I can save this palm? All suggestions appreciated.

What type of soil would work best?
by TropicalUtah- 7 replies

Hello! I live in Utah and have a 3-5 Gallon Windmill Palm and Pygmy Date Palm that I would like to put in containers. I plan on moving them inside when it gets cold, and leaving them outside when the temperatures are right. The containers I will put them in are 20 Inches tall and wide. What soil mix would work? We don’t have palm or tropical soil mixes in the area, but I have read that big brand garden soil with perlite would work? Any tips or advice would be great as I want to avoid root rot. Thanks!

We have some gnarley east winds today. Came home and my windmill which was just reported a couple weeks ago was on its side and it fell out of the pot a bit exposing some roots. I immediately reported. Added fresh soil and watered it some of the leave folded in today I’m hoping it will be ok? Also this palm is currently recovering from a tad of root rot

Hi! I have a bit of different palm seeds. Some of them I got from @@DoomsDave, others from elsewhere. I try to provide them with the right conditions (coconut fiber with perlite, moist substrate), unfortunately it's been half a year and nothing germinates. What can I do wrong? Cocothrinac dussiana, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, Dypsis Decarei, Dypsis lanceolata, Syagrus romanzoffiana.

Little Roystonea Regia in pot
by spikemc- 3 replies

A few years ago, I germinated seeds of Roystonea Regia that currently measure about 1 meter tall. I have them in a semi-shade place (2 hours of direct sun). This is one of them. As we all know, these are plants for full sun, but when they were little I wanted to protect them from the direct sun until they will become stronger. I'm in 9b area (Valencia-Spain), so my idea is to grow in a pot (to move and protect in hot areas during winter) until they start to make trunk and then pass them to the ground as they will be stronger to resist the winters here (rarely below 28ºF ). My question is: With this size it would be convenient to start giving th…
