Anyone else successfully grow Ravenea rivularis

Anyone get their indoor Majesty palm to grow and open spears into fronds? Thing is I live at 7,000ft in Flagstaff a fairly dry mountain climate so its very dry indoors usually. It is in the kitchen which give it a little more moisture and heat from cooking. After 1 year of the original transplant from the nursery container I had used some cheap organic generic fruit fertilizer I had laying around. It's mostly bone meal and has a good amount of nitrates. At first I was thinking it had low potassium as the leaves were sort of yellow on some fronds but I checked the soil it wasn't too soggy so then I figured it just didn't get enough light and I pretty much left it there in …

Potting mix breakdown
by David_Sweden- 19 replies

Can anyone describe what a potting mix looks like once it starts to break down? Pics would be nice but also a description: Does most of it end up as small particles (like dust) that is washed out, or is it mostly fiber-like slimy stuff? does it usually happen very quickly or over several years? I read that soilless media of peat moss, bark or coir typically breaks down after 2-4 years, bark usually lasting the longest but when i starts to break down it can go fast, and coir 2nd longest. For peat there is the von Post scale, which describes the most broken down stages as H10 "No discernible plant structure; when squeezed, it all escapes between the fingers", H9 "…

First Inflorescence of C.cataractarum in my Office!
by Funkthulhu- 4 replies

Just wanted to post some pictures of my Cham. cat. because it has never bloomed before and this is the largest palm I've ever had do so. (so far) One popped last week, the other was open when I came in to work on Monday. Is there a way I can better promote pollination? I've kinda "simulated wind" with enough shaking to make them both dust each other up. Any other suggestions?

I tried twice to grow from seed Cyrtostachys Renda and Areca Vestiaria Maroon. They germinated very well. They grew very well for about 5 months. Then, they started to get burned tips (especially C. Renda) and spots on leaf (especially A. Vestiaria) and little by little, all of them died. Each try, same result. I suspect that I did something wrong with the soil. Everybody told me to increase humidity, I did it and they died faster. I repeat, died faster. Areca is definitely a faster grower than C. Renda and in my opinion, it looks better. I would like to try again to grow them from seed. What soil would you use for these species? Thanks. Cyrtostachys Renda …

Today I noticed that my Chamaedorea brachypoda is not as happy as it sued to be, not sure the cause but it was in my unheated green house all winter and unfortunately the same have been happening to some other potted palms in the same green house ... is it for lack of air circulation, lack of water or too much water ( I tried to avoid both though) ? but I am sure it was happy until last week...I just get it it out to open area so it might get more oxygen...

New pot (30 litre) and the new soil. What you think..is it OK?

I got this Areca vestiaria years ago as a germinated seed from RPS. It's the only one of a group that's thrived. It's always been indoors in a room that only gets morning light/heat (i.e., my sunroom faces east). Some of the offshoots from the main stem declined and I've had to spray for scale now and then, but otherwise it's done OK under a relatively low-humidity, shady, highly variable temperature regime. It's my suspicion, beyond mere acclimation, that success with certain palm genera under less than ideal [challenging?] growing conditions may be dependent on the specific genetics of an individual palm.

My Nano-Greenhouse

Only when a seedling has problems with its roots (as in this case with a L itapebiense seedling without a real radicle) I am using a (kind of) greenhouse. In all other cases my window sills (for seedlings) or my living room (around my home office for bigger ones) is enough (without any humidifier), no matter if the palms are »tropical« (as e.g. Licuala) or not.

Hi all, bought this palm as Hyophorbe verschaffeltii last November. Please can someone confirm whether this is what it says it is? I have seen pics of young spindle palms and the base of them looks almost black. I also saw a pic of a Pseudopheonix sargentii seedling yesterday, and it looked the spitting image of this one. Thanks

HELP! I CAME FROM IKEA! WHAT AM I?
by JoeBronx- 11 replies

Transplanted from New York City to Los Angeles, I was fascinated by palms! Three or four years ago I went to Ikea and bought a beauty of a potted palm! It was about 30 inches high and was a cluster of three 2" stalks with palm fronds growing at different levels. A year ago a fire at our house forced me to move this palm outdoors where it was lost among other plants. Though watered regularly it soon began to look overgrown and terrible. I WANT TO RESCUE IT! Checking Google Images I'm fairly certain it appears to be a Dracaena (Possibly, Corn). In the absence of a pix (trying but unsuccessful as of yet), can anyone identify this plant so I can begin to t…

Pritchardia pacifica

I recently was given Pritchardia pacifica seed, which I'll be planting soon. The problem is that our winters are too cold to grow this species in the ground, so I'll probably keep these potted for as long as I'm able to. Does anyone have any experience with these in pots, or more specifically indoors? I bet those large leaves would look great indoors. Thanks for any input! -Josh

Mazari Palm (Nannorrhops) Mystery
by PAPalmGrower- 5 replies
- 2.8k views
I need some help with this palm - I'm not sure exactly what it is and it hasn't grown at all so far. It was purchased via mail order in early April this year as a 7 gallon "Nannorrhops ritchieana". However, this specimen has silvery-gray leaves and a very stunted appearance. Some have suggested it may be the variety commonly called Nannorrhops 'arabica', but yet others say it appears to have grown much more slowly than 'arabica' and may be what is referred to as Nannorrhops ritchieana sp. 'Silver' or possibly the Kashmir form of Mazari palm (Nannorrhops ritchieana var. 'Kashmiri'). Any thoughts? Also, I potted it into a slightly larger pot back in mid April in a very…

Some questions

Hi guys, I wonder if you could help me about some worries and questions I have about certain palms I own. First, I've a butyagrus, a JxB F2 and a Livistona nitida which their newest leaf are very yellowish. I wonder If it's normal or it's caused by some short of defficency (iron perhaps?) or overfertilizing them (I use Palm Focus once a week or every 15 days and I always give them the amount recomended (5ml per litre). I leave you some pics about them. The 3 first ones are the butyagrus, the next 3 are from my JxB F2 and the last 2 are the L. nitida. The second question is about my Sabal uresana. is It alright? I leave som…

Looking for suggestions - outdoor pot culture
by Jdiaz31089- 6 replies

Hello, I recently re-organized some large pots and moved two of them to the front of my yard. Here is a picture of where the pots are in the yard to give you an idea of the layout - right in the middle of yard pretty much. This area gets full sun most of the day, and our climate is hot and dry - inland, central California - zone 9b. The large pot has a protea cynaroides in it, which I plan to keep there. But the smaller pot next to it is now empty (I had some chili peppers planted in it previously, but tore those out.) Anyway, I would like to use the pot to keep a palm. Preferably, a palm that is marginal, as it would be relatively easy to move the pot indoors in the even…

Around may 2014 I germinated some Allagoptera caudescens seeds and kept one plant for myself. It's been growing steadily as an indoor plant on my window sil and I'm growing more fond of it as it slowly gets larger. I have noticed something peculiar about this plant though and maybe somebody here could tell me if this is a normal habit for this species. At the base of the plant something is growing I have not seen before with any of my palms: Is this some sort of airial rootball and should I plant it deeper then? Thanks for your help!

Repotting day

Spring arrives to Spain and i think is the best moment to repot a few palms that must wait for more time to be planted. I hope they will be growing healthy in the new pot. The first is Johannestmania altifrons. One year in the old pot and i think is the moment for a big pot. People says i must be worried with root disturbance, but last year was perfect and i think, this will be the same. And now, Howea forsteriana
