Help! My plant is dying

Hi all! I am having some problems with my plant (which I think is a howea forsteriana?) and wondered if anyone could help?! The leaves are turning brown and drying up - please see pictures, are there any giveaway signs of the problem ? Have owned for around 5 months, re-potted on day 1, water around once a week when soil becomes dry, was positioned by a single glaze window in a bright room but have since moved as it can get pretty cold by that window during the night but not usually below 15 celcius. Any advice would be much appreciated! I would also like to remove the dead leaves and stems but not sure how to go about this, I don’t wa…

Chamaerodea elegans I'm trying to save
by mdsonofthesouth- 6 replies

Saved these from a poinsettia holiday basket at work.....at least I hope I can. Looks like they got a little "sun burn". Split the 8 palms into pots and gave them a sea kelp shot and will be seeing how they do. Hoping I can save them, guess time will tell.

Root rot
by Rickybobby- 6 replies

So being ocd I tend to over water I.ln pots. What was really disappointing was me purchasing Ravena rivularis again and trying a go at it. Biggest mistake read a ton of people saying can’t water enough wet feet etc well in pots it didn’t work out for me. I rotted a the roots and all my fronds have wilted off. Unfortunately I have changed all soil and dried them out but not sure of the outcome of these pour souls. My trachycarpus has some what the same situation but is pulling through slowly. I have learned a lot this year with potted palms. Really let that soil drain out and dry and make sure really the soil drains well and the pot can get it out. I hope I learn my…

Will this grow led lamp be good?

I wanted to advise , would this lamp grow led be good for my palms? http://allegro.pl/zarowka-led-grow-54w-e27-7-kolorow-do-roslin-hps-i5679266472.html In the winter I would like to brighten for rather small and medium plants. I'm just worried, that they did not burn my leaves. I read many websites and guides for half a year and chose this lamp one because it has a lot of lumens and kelvin and better diodes, than those from China. I do not want to buy on aliexpress because I do not trust this portal. I prefer in my country.

Palm plant roots out of pot
by jeffrey- 8 replies

I have a Jade Empress palm tree. I got it a few years ago while on vacation in South Florida. It was small and bare rooted and I planted it in a pot. It has been growing fine for the last 2 years. I put it outside in the Spring and back into a heated and bright sunroom for the Winter. The problem with the palm is that the supporting roots that come from the base of the plant are out of the soil and the plant is wobbly. I tried to fill the pot to the brim with soil but the roots are still to high. I tried to wire the base of the plant to small stakes to help support it but it is still wobbly and I am afraid that if its outside and we get our normal strong thunder storms i…

Is there a 'Seramis' substitute in Australia?

The German clay product is not available here. What would be the closest product? LECA and is not as absorbent I have been told,Or is seramis just a form of LECA? Zeolite breaks down. What about lava rock or scoria, would that be any good? What about hydroponic clay balls?

Chamaerops humilis var cerifera...painfully slow
by mdsonofthesouth- 11 replies
- 2.2k views
Both put on 2 fronds right away but have taken months to barely push out a 3rd. They get OK sun, sit at 70f+ and get controlled watering. Gave them a shot of organic sea kelp and water few weeks back and thats what seemed to start the next fronds. Might do a monthly light handed "feed" for them from here on out. Love the way these palms look but they grow slow as molasses in winter time!

Too Much Flare (and Mulch)?
by fernonvernon- 2 replies
- 1.2k views
Hi all, Just finished repotting a Christmas Palm that'd been sitting in a big ol' plastic pot since we moved in. It'd been (essentially) living in fine sand, so we went ahead and prepared a mix (sourced from JungleMusic), but -- having read that palm's are particularly sensitive when it comes to their roots -- attempted to keep the (root-bound) ball as intact as possible. Am very much a minnow around here, and seeing as how I've basically never done this sort of thing before... I'd hugely appreciate some feedback/advice re whether I'm "meant" to cover more of the flare. [Not entirely sure what I can do about the relative "mossiness" of the san…

Self-watering pots
by David_Sweden- 3 replies
- 10.5k views
It seems to me a special version of self-watering pots should be able to solve three problems, especially for big palms: To have to water very frequently, to get even moisture (neither wet nor dry spots), and to provide easy means for leaching. And maybe wouldn't have to pot up as much. Ordinary self-watering pots (aka "sub-irrigated planters") don't have these benefits though. This is how they seem to work (free pic from Wikipedia): Basically water tank placed under soil, with some kind of wick to suck water up to soil by capillary action. Some of the most commonly available commerical ones are GrowBox, EarthBox and Ollie Plants Sippers, which all seem to…

Coccothrinax seedlings
by David_Sweden- 2 replies

End of August 2016 I got 10 Coccothrinax Miraguama seeds from Zadengigant and 15 Rhapis Multifida from Seedman. One week later I discovered that Rarepalmseeds had just gotten some fresh Cocco M so I bought 30 of them plus 30 Cocco Fragrans (but got ~20% extra). In September I "planted" most of them in ziplock bags with damp paper towel (1-2 each) except 21 Cocco F and 33 Cocco M from RPS which I dumped collectively in 2 bags with moist soil. By Oct 16th the first had germinated: Two Cocco F and on Cocco M from RPS. In December I moved them germinated ones to "rootrainers" 10cm deep: 8 Cocco M and 21 Cocco F, of which 1+5 from paper towel bags. None had leaves …

Pot not draining enough
by Andrew19- 1 follower

Hello, have 2 hurricane palm seeds in 4" pots, 1/2 & 1/2 potting mix and perlite in a terrarium under 2 60w LEDs. Last time I watered them was probably 3 days ago and they still seem very wet. I can't put them outside yet because it is a bit too chilly. Any ideas? Should I move to a mix with some sand and peet and hope they drain faster? Bigger pot? How often should I be watering? Thanks in advance.

Check out this soil amendment
by Missi- 9 replies

I ordered this mix to add to potting soil. What do you guys think? Ingredients are: pumice, calcined clay, montmorillonite (fired) clay, and pine bark fines. This is created for the purpose of bonsai and succulent growing. Is the pumice and monto clay unnecessary for palm potting media? Should I add it to potting soil, or use just this mix? I know a couple of you guys suggest using just LECA clay pebbles, Seramis (which I can't find available in the U.S., but isn't it just calcined clay bits?), along with some pine fines. I'm new to growing palms and have acquired the following potted palms this year: 1. Dypsis decaryi (triangle palm) 2. Chamaerops humilis (European fan palm) 3. Phoenix roebelenii (pygmy date palm) I live in the lower Hudson Valley of NY (zone 6/7), where weather is chilly to cold from October 15 through April 15, though it is rare for us to stay below 20 degrees for a prolonged period. I have a cold greenhouse where I overwinter subtropical and tropical plants, and I heat it to about 45 degrees. It can get warmer than that during the day if it's not overcast or too cold out. But essentially conditions are far less than mild or tropical for a prolong…
