Ohio palms?
by clevelandtropicsmaybe- 6 replies

I've done a lot of research and have gotten few promising results but does anyone think there are any species of palm trees that can survive in the ground in NE Ohio? If anyone in Ohio has seen or knows of any that are already planted or has any pictures, that would be very helpful. I live in zone 6b because lake Erie is less than 1 mile away and warms up the cold air a little bit, but it can still stay below freezing with snow for long periods of time. The 2 best options that I'm aware of so far are needle palm and sabal minor.

Transplanting Needle Palm?
by newtopalmsMD- 1 follower

Last April I planted a good sized 7 or 10 gallon needle palm. This spring I would like to move it to another location for purely aesthetic reasons. I hear palms in general do not like to be transplanted. What are the chances I could damage the plant by moving it. Are there any specific things I should do when transplanting? Thanks

There are 8 genera of palms represented in this photo. How many can you get? One will be near impossible because it's an odd hybrid.

Livistona Chinensis die back attempt

Last winter I left several Chinese Fan Palms in the ground over winter to see if they would return in the spring. For the small plants I used a 1 gallon big box store Chinese fan palms with five plants. I split them three and two. I put a small pile of oak leaves over the center of the palms but left the leaves exposed to be killed by the cold. Here in zone 7a Derwood MD the second frost pretty much killed all of the exposed foliage (as expected). Today I removed the oak leaves from one of the two small group of plants and found what's in the first picture below. First I was surprised to see the frond petioles that were covered by leaves were still green. Each of…

Phoenix ID - Rupicola?

After a little walk around my neighborhood to spot something interesting, found this Phoenix of some kind that looks a lot like P. Rupicola. If it is Rupicola, then it’s pretty amazing to see one on the panhandle. I suppose it could also be a Rupicola hybrid, or just a plain but interesting looking P. Canariensis. What say you?!!!!!!

On a few of my pinnate palms this year I have noticed that when the spear is pushing that the individual leaflets aren't opening/unfolding creating a droopy looking frond that is rather flaccid looking as it pushes out. I have seen this on a butia, mule and queen. Any thoughts on the cause?

Here’s a few pics I tried to take discreetly while walking my dogs at lunch. Our HOA was built in 1993 and is composed of over 100 homes. We’re located in the southeastern suburbs. Most of the palms were planted at a later date. As you can see not much variety but some nice specimens nonetheless. 99% of palms you see in the Portland area are Trachycarpus.

How much sun do these need to grow fast and flower? I like mine to grow compact (I hate stretched look),mine gets from 9am to 1pm of sun then to 3pm sun only on leaves,is that enough? or should I move for full afternoon sun? P.s. it's in a pot

Nice Surprise

Ok so this is probably nothing to write home about but it got me a little fired up so I thought I'd share. So over the winter we'd pull handfuls of trachy hair off one of the trees to use to start our fires. It's crazy flammable. Anyways I was cleaning up around the yard today and noticed a yellow spot on the trunk of said tree. I took a closer look and noticed it was an old boot. So I cleaned some more and got some more yellow, and some more, and some more. I dunno if this is a typical coloration of old trachy boots but im hoping it stays.

PNW Palm Sightings

Recently I was driving towards Lincoln City, Oregon and along my way I noticed the Siri and Sons nursery. Driving by a house on that property, I noticed some interesting palms growing. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures because we zoomed past it to fast, so google maps it is! Take a look at the screenshots and let me know what you think. I believe the first photo shows a couple date palms and the second one shows several Washingtonias! Knowing our climate (8b), its constantly wet and cool here which is the perfect combination for inhibiting Washigtonia growth. Yet somehow when I drove by, all of the palms in the google map street view are still there and growing! …
