Hi I need some advice I was considering planting my 2 trachys but the thing is I will be moving home in about 2 years if I plant them temporary until I move will it do them any good as I will be definitely taking them with me or should I leave them in the big pots I bought but the thing is I want them to grow big dark green leaves that can withstand the wind more.as the bad wind is destroying my leaves and I tried placing it in sheltered areas away from wind but I cant win as wind comes from all directions.advice needed.

I posted on the main forum and no response. I would like some of these palms. I mean syagrus x butia. Syagrus pollinated with butia pollen. The pictures of this palm look IMHO way more tropical and coconutesque. Anybody got some seedlings or a source?

Watering advice in winter
by BeauBlues- 16 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi all! This is my first post to this forum. I'm creating a sort of backyard paradise for me and the family. We have a large backyard in Corona, CA in zone 9b. I started planting this last summer. So far I have ravanea glauca, C. gigas, Pritchardia sp., sabal causarium, parajubaea microcarpa, bismarckia nobilis, roystonea princeps, and a few others. My question is, during the growing months, when and how much to water is obvious. But right now I'm clueless. Our nightly temps are usually in the low 40's to upper 30's. Sometimes we dip down to freezing and the upper 20's. I have essentially stopped watering. My Pritchardias are looking a bit sad. I can't tell if it's …

A few people had mentioned wanting to see some of my palms. All of these are growing in zone 9a with only the Kerriodoxa and and Chambeyronia getting supplemental heat. I'll keep adding more photos over the next few days while I'm home, let me know if you have any requests!

Tallest Livistona?
by Sandy Loam- 17 replies
- 2.4k views
From reading PalmTalk, I have discovered that Livistona Decora (aka. Livistona Decipiens) is the fastest-grower according to readership consensus. However, which Livistona is the tallest after about 20 years of growth? There is a Livistona Decora down the street from me, but it has remained the same size for many years now. A Washingtonia Robusta in its place would have been much taller by now. I am beginning to speculate that perhaps Livistona Decora reaches a typical maximum growth size which is not terribly impressive, despite its rapid growth rate. The Livistona Decora nearby, and others I have seen, tend to be about 20 feet tall or slightly less. I have nev…

Rhopalostyllis sp Chatham Islands
by Alberto- 10 replies
- 2.3k views
Rhopalostyllis sp Chatham Islands is very fast growing palm compared to Rhopalstylis sapida . This latter I also have growing here. They survived practically unscathed a freeze that killed some of my highland Euterpe edulis and killed also a mature Chamaedorea costaricana.

How fast, or how slow do Needle Palms grow?
by siege2050- 5 replies
- 1.7k views
I know they are slow, but just as an example, about how tall and wide, foliage included, would a 1.5 foot planted height Needle be in 5 years with good water, heat, and fertilizer. I am trying to get an idea where to plant some of the plants I have bought this year.

Everyone in the Southeast... Check your spears! 1 2
by smithgn- 52 replies

After this very wet winter we've had so far, it's not surprising that I've had spear pull on 2 of my L. Nitida's and 1 of my P. Sylvestris'. All 3 are still seedlings, although I would have never seen it coming for my Nitida's. A deep a green color and very healthy looking, I would have never guessed. I've brought them all inside for any below freezing temperatures for most of the winter but of course left them outside in the rain. Bad idea. Check your spears!!!!!! I'm a bit depressed, but I'm holding out hope. I just poured hydrogen peroxide down the hatch on all 3. Going to post some pics tomorrow. You'll be amazed at how healthy they look, but for now it's quite th…

Hi, Long time lurker on palmtalk. I adore palms. Just wanted to share some pictures of my Trachycarpus nanus for my first post here.. From seeds I sowed in may 2011 (bought from europalms.be) After germination they have always lived outside unprotected in my garden in the Netherlands: I think their fresh-green color stands out nicely against the Cocoa Shell Mulch. With a 33cl cola can for scale: And 2 plants I didnt want to seperate: Thanks for looking!

Needle Palm and winter wet.
by siege2050- 1 follower

I bought 3 1 gallon Needle Palms that are getting their divided fronds now, and I have read that needles like water. But what about growing them in places that can be damp after winter rains, and snows when it might get down to 0F? I dont want the roots to rot. Close to my house water can accumulate for a day or two after heavy rains, or snow in winter and that is where I would like to plant them if possible.

Container Ranch Dypsis?
by Funkthulhu- 9 replies
- 1.1k views
I've got a small Lutey I picked up at Lowe's last year (at least that's what it says on the label, I'm dubious). But I keep seeing all these fabulous species you southern-types are flaunting and I'm jealous. What would be some unique and/or beautiful examples of the Dypsis clan that would look good in an indoor setting. Adult height can be more than 8 feet if it's a slow grower, I can always donate to one of the indoor gardens in 5 or 10 years. For that matter, what funky-cool indoor palms of any genus would you suggest to catch the eye?

Livistona drudei
by NatureGirl- 8 replies
- 1.8k views
I recently noticed my neighbor across the street has a nice Livistona drudei in her back yard. She had the 'jungle' thinned out and that's when I realized it wasn't a Liv. decipiens!I use to have a Liv. decipiens and it was a very heavy trunked palm with a super full head. I like this one much better. It has a thinner trunk and the head is not too full, just perfect amount of leaves IMO. Anyway, here's a few pics I took today, loaded with seed.

Advice Needed for Trachycarpus Fortunei
by siege2050- 17 replies
Hello everyone, I am sure you have heard this before but I was wondering, what is a realistic growth rate for Trachycarpus Fortunei per year. I ordered 4 off of ebay for about 11 dollars apiece as its not possible to find them around here. Our summers here in Oklahoma are around 95 F up to 105 F a few times, very humid, winters are down to as low as 0 F zone 7a. Soil in yard is acidic oak, hickory, pine forest. Also would it be safe to plant them in full sun if it does get as hot as 105 F? Will I have to protect them from now on, or will they become more cold tolerant and not need protection when older?

King Palm started to grow (already)
by NorCalKing- 4 replies

So with our last few weeks running in the 60's my Archontophoenix cunninghamiana has started to push out the latest spear about 1/4" in the last week. I'm curious when most people start to water and fertilize again? Also, it seems the tip of one of the spears suffered some frost damage from our early season cold snap, I'm wondering will this harm the whole frond, or will it only effect the very end where it's turned brown?

Mule Palm in Zone 8b
by nitsua0895- 34 replies
- 4.5k views
I got a 5 foot tall mule palm and during December I left it mostly outside because it stayed so warm for most of the month but it's inside now because there were a couple of light freezes earlier this week. Has anyone had experience with how much cold this palm can handle without any damage? I ask this because I'm thinking about planting it within the next month. I know Mule Palms have a similar hardiness to Butia Capitatas which grows very well here. During our coldest winters I've only noticed damage to Sago Palms which promptly come back the next spring. And with this being a warm El Niño winter I figured it might be okay to plant soon. It would also be in a sunny…

phoenix canariensis in typical temperate climate
by brattle_007- 14 replies

I have Phoenix Canariensis which I've germinated from seed. Its only grown about 4 foot in 7 year. Noticed if exposed to freeze of about -3C it easily damages the fronds. I thought it would be more hardier then that in temperate maritime climate!
