Central OK update
by Dave_OK- 19 replies

Quick update from my garden in Central Oklahoma. My Sabal minors continue to thrive and my largest minor gets bigger each summer. It produced three large seed stalks this year. I believe this is a "Louisiana" variety, but I'm not 100% certain as I bought it nearly 10 years ago at a local nursery. I've potted up numerous seedlings to give to friends and transplanted to other areas of the garden. It's quite a plant! My Windmill Palm is in a very protected micro climate and you can see it's growth rate below. I've wrapped it up anytime we see temps drop below 10 or so, which is fairly rare, maybe once or twice a winter. Other than that, I just pile up leaves around it a…

Chamaerhops humilis “Cerifera” Quandry.

Chamaerhops humilis “Cerifera” Quandry. We are growing several of these blue Mediterranean palms in our garden in Dallas. The individual plants range from a white blue, very grey blue, to a bluish green. One plant produced leaves that are light blue in color and average about 16 segments attached to a petiole. This type of leave is circled in yellow. This same plant produced leaves where the segments are twice as long and only occur in a group of four segments to a petiole. This leaf is circled in red. Have you ever seen a Chamaerhops humilis with these types of leaves?

I was exploring Southport, NC on google maps when I came across this large sabal palmetto growing among a few smaller ones beside the Southport Baptist Church. It is certainly one of the larger specimens in the area.

Waggle score

Perusing the local classified ads website and was watching this one for a while. The price kept dropping as I think the size threw people off and not the time of year most people are thinking about their gardens. At $80 I couldn’t pass it up. It’s about 4’ tall overall. It always pays to keep your eyes open.

July update South Carolina

Well, I figure it's about time for an update. I continue to have the best luck with Sabals here: S. causarium, almost 6' to the top of the tallest leaf Then there's S. uresana, which is also doing well. I planted 3 of these and still have 2. And here's a waggie, which is doing OK but could use more water and shade: Cycas panzihuaensis is still my favorite cycad here: That about covers the weeded areas of my yard. Here's a BxJxS planted out this spring: Now I thought I had some liner-sized palms around here somewhere: Maybe I should look under the weeds? Yeah, that's better. Of course…

Hi Folks, I recently (june 2019) put a windmill in the ground after having it in a pot for a few years going in the house during the winter. So, the plant is in its first winter. I am located in Wilton, CT, zone 6B. I have done a lot of reading about winter protection methods and I find there are several things to be concerned with. Not warm enough, too warm on mild days, condensation build up rotting the leaves, lights burning the palm, etc etc. Some choose C9 bulbs, some CFL, some use no bulbs and just heavy leaf mulch. Some wrap with plastic, some with canvas, some with a wood box, some with ridgid foam insulation. Some vent the enclosure, som…

Winter is coming...

Just wanted to wish everyone here a mild winter and share protection plans! Temperatures here in Central Texas have already been below freezing and next week we may see another dip (Fall basically lasted a week, ugh...). I don't have a lot of zone-pushing palms, technically, however, I do have a lot of a newly planted and/or younglings in the ground. I have yet to lose a palm to cold (some spear pull, though). This is what I do: - Get a big bale of straw and wrap the straw around the base of the palm where the spear is (if possible). I hold it in place by some sticks and cheap netting. - In addition, put a frost cloth over the top for the more sensitive palms …

Raleigh is located in zone 7b but just over the line from 8a. I know some folks have unsuccessfully tried Butias here but wondering if anyone has tried the Jubaea X Butia hybrid? I believe that is supposed to be hardier than the Butia.

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if I should mulch around the base of my windmill palm? I have it under a box with a heat source. If I don’t mulch wouldn’t the heat be able to keep the ground thawed?

I planted this Needle Palm in July of 2018... protected it through winter and in early spring of 2019, the new growth started dying... the new growth in the summer seemed to be stunted and yellowish in color. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong ?

Questions about my Protection Method
by kbob11- 1 follower

Hello everyone, I just put up my winter protection yesterday and I had a couple of questions. The biggest one being, will my palms be okay with no sunlight for the next 4 months? I have T. fortunei (right) wrapped with frost cloth with a heat lamp attached to a thermo-cube. The Needle (left) is tied together surrounded by straw / leaves. It has a frost cloth roof with plastic corrugated roofing over it. Can I just leave it for 4 months? No watering / sunlight? There are small ventilation holes in the back of each box and doors that I can open if it gets too warm. Thanks for the help!

Canary Island Date Palm severe tilt
by JUG831- 11 replies
- 2.6k views
We have a canary island date palm that started the year very straight, up and down. However during the summer it began to tilt and now the top is 12 inches tilted from center. The tree is not unsteady, I cannot push it further. But I cannot figure out why it is happening or what to do about it? Tree was planted about 5 years ago and now has 4 feet or more of trunk. I do see some areas around the tree where the ground has sunk a little bit. No idea! Any thoughts?

Hi everyone, I'm sorry for the lack of pictures. I hope to put a close up on here later. I planted a 15 gal T. fortunei this spring and it has been doing well. The past 2 weeks the days have been in the 50-60s and the nights 38-50degrees. I have been noticing that the frond tips are starting to turn yellow. Should this be a concern? The new spears are still emerging and look great. We have had a couple of light frosts but I was going to hold off on my winter protection until the nights are consistently below freezing. Thanks!

Recap for My Area and a Request 1 2

I know there is a lot of information out there concerning the cold hardiness of various palms and tropical looking plants. I would like to ask each of you who have the time and are willing to document information, especially if you are like me and didn't protect anything. I think this sort of information is great because a lot of us don't protect palms. I live in Greenwood, South Carolina. The altitude here is around 660 feet. We are a zone 8a. We have long summers, and it is not unusual to have 100 F days in July and August. The soil in most parts around here is either clay or a clay mix. The only palm that is native to my county is Sabal minor. We do have an increasin…

pheonix Transplanting a Volunteer

So about 7 years ago I was just walking around the house enjoying some dates I got from Abu Dhabi, UAE. Probably al khalas dates, but I am not sure because I got a few kinds. Anyhow this bad boy popped up and I never actually gave it any attention, as I never expected a date palm from such a very hot desert country to grow and make it here. Its right next to the garage door and it keeps scratching the cars, so its tied up now until the spring or early summer when I transplant it. Its growing on the west side of the house, so only gets sun in the afternoon.

Disposable (?) Palm
by Manalto- 2 followers

Years ago, I was at somebody's house in Mobile who had outside their dining room window a fan palm that functioned well as a privacy screen from neighbors when we sat at the table for dinner and conversation. It filled the window from top to bottom, so it must have been about 12 ft tall and close enough to the house that the fronds brushed gently against the screen. I liked the visual effect and the way it allowed balmy breezes into the room. I assume that, eventually, the palm got too big for its spot up against the house so that's why I called this thread "disposable." But maybe it doesn't have to be... Can you recommend a palm that's adapted to 8b Gulf Coast condi…
