Trashy Spear Fully Pulled
by PalmTreeDude- 2 replies

Well... My Trachy spear pulled from the worst cold snap we have had here, the funny thing is my Butias, Mediterranean Fan Palm, and of course my Needle Palm are all thriving right now. I put most protection on the trachy and it is having the problem. The inner spear pulled but some fronds on the outside are green. Will it survive or is it likely dead?

Washingtonia robusta overwintering
by David_K- 5 replies

Hello, i live in Europe, in Czech Republic. My place is in zone 7a/b, this year was a bad winter with low of -12°C (for y'all imperialists 10°F), usually about - 8°C (17°F). My idea is to make a box from polycarbonate, cover the ground inside the box with styrofoam, roll the tree into some light wraps and then with heating cable (64W 4m, y'all imperialists 13ft). Is this possible or does anyone have a better idea how to protect the palm? I can get a lot of materials for free. I planted the tree this week, its like 60-80 cm high.

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum. I have been growing palms on and off for a good portion of my life, and have recently moved into a new home where I have planted a few palms in the yard. Among them are Sabal Minor, Rhapidophyllum Hystrix and also Trachycarpus Fortunei. I live in the northern Atlanta suburbs and there are many fine examples of Trachycarpus that thrive in our area. We are zone 7b according to the 1990 USDA zone map, the 2010 map places my location right on the border of 7b and 8a. I purchased a distressed T. Fortunei from a local garden center back in April and immediately planted it into the yard. It was in very sad shape with many yellow frond…

I braved the cold and rainy Pacific Northwest-like temps today to help Raymond pot up his large collection of Sabal brazoria, and I am absolutely shocked by how fast these have grown. These palms are just over two years old, grown from seed collected from his Sabal brazoria on the east side of the First Church of the Nazarene in downtown Wichita..here are some pictures from today...enjoy!

Trachycarpus put to the test at -2F
by TexasColdHardyPalms- 19 replies

A customer of mine in Amarillo purchased eleven reginerated windmills with 11-13' of clear trunk from me last year for a landscaping project. This winter had two very cold spells of which the later dropped the temp to -2f. The duration of the cold was intense as well with over 60 consecutive hours below 25F. Needless to say all of them were mostly defoliated, but all of them have resumed growing with more than a foot of new foliage and a few are already flowering. I have attached a few pics.

Happy Spring to Everyone! This will be the first post to evaluate the winter damage to my palms here in zone 8a on the westside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The winter overall was quite wet with soil moisture nearly constant from late November through January. Temperatures during this period were cool to moderate with only a few blasts of chilly air, with no days being below freezing. The absolute low I recorded at my weather station was 12F and I reached 15F about 4 times with several more lows between 17 and 20F. Winter was quite short lived thanks to an unusually mild fall with nights below 32 not really setting in until the beginning of December. Rainfal…

Filifera Seedlings After Low of 4 Degrees

I planted a handful of seeds in May of 2014, and this is their second winter without protection. I'm in Lubbock (7b), and we had two cold snaps this winter; one was a low of 6, and the other was 4. Fast forward a couple of months, and I was pleasantly surprised to find new growth in several seedlings. These seeds were provided by Jwitt--thanks buddy!

Butia Cold Damage?
by nitsua0895- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
I wanted to address this problem very early(in case it's some sort of fungal infection). Our winter minimum was 20F but this came after heavy rain and we had below freezing temperatures for around 15 hours on back to back nights. Could this have caused minor cold damage to a Butia odorata?

Trachycarpus fortunei ‘Nanital’ to me is one of the most beautiful of all the hardy trachycarpus. The leaves are so big and wide they almost look like another palm species. This picture doesn’t do it justus but those that grow this palm will agree it awesome. This is the only one I have it’s a male palm. Also check out the orange pot, thats a canna australis I overwinter and put outside a week ago. The leaves are not really alive but the flower bud is….Thanks for looking.

I'm knew to the forum, anyone out there grow their palms indoors/outdoors? I'm in Michigan and I have tried cold hardy palms in the ground with varying results. Now that I'm in a condo they have to all be potted. I move them inside in the fall and outside in the spring when weather allows. We've had an unbelievable stretch up here for February. I've had my Trachy and Sabal Minor out since last Friday. I took my coconut and Bizmark out for the day Saturday and Sunday. Anyone else like me out there.

Spear pull victim: B. Odorata

B. Odorata in the ground for two years. About 5.5ft tall. The plant saw lows this winter of 12ºF and 14-15ºF twice. A few days ago I noticed some of the newest growth had died but it didn't alarm me at the time because the same had happened to the S. Mexicana. When I took a closer look today, I noticed the new growth was dead all the way down to the base, in stark contrast to the Sabal. I gave a tug and the two newest fronds came out: Leaving this bottomless pit: Is there anything I can attempt like Hydrogen Peroxide or the partial beheading surgery? Does this look like damage induced by cold temperatures or cold rain? It saw no ice or snow…

Spear Leaf Problems
by nitsua0895- 5 replies
There seems to be some type of disease or fungus that's infecting several of my palms. First I noticed symptoms on my Mule palm, then one of the emerging fronds on my Chamaedorea Cataractarum collapsed, and now one of my young potted Trachycarpus Fortunei palms is basically dead because of this problem. The spear leaf turns white and starts to feel crusty. And in the case of the T. Fortunei, it has almost been eaten all the way through and I can nearly pull the spear out. What could this possibly be?

Phoenix and butia after winter

So I went for a drive to the south coast to look at the maturing Phoenix and Butia there. Despite being a bit windswept in places they are looking quite good. Butia seeding quite heavily (tried to germinate before but no success) Phoenix have produced lots of seed too which I've collected as should provide quite cold hardy seedlings.

Sabal Minor how diverse are they really?
by palm tree man- 1 follower

How many varities of Sabal Minor are there really? I have four specimens that cannot be identified by experts at three different major universities; by individuals possessing doctorate degrees and that specialize in our native species. Yet, no one can accurately identify them. They don't even really attempt to and only can safely give reasons why they aren't consistent with what is in the norm for minor or palmetto. How diverse can one species be before it is justly studied and divided into proper classifications? The might Brazoria palm is considered in some circles to be a Sabal minor or a Sabal Minor Louisiana. Then there is the other mysterious trunking Sabal in…
