Trachy "seedlings" zone 6b
by nick1427d- 12 replies

Hey everyone first time posting. Been attempting to grow palms for about 2 years now. Have "killed" 2 larger Trachy due to rot and 1 needle over winter, none protected. I have about 20 Trachy seedlings with about 2 to 3 straps sitting in plastic pots at the moment. I'd like to have them permanently in the ground around my inground pool. I have some ideas on protection during winter and since I got these dirt cheap not terribly worried if a few don't make it. Question is should I wait to plant these now, this fall, or next spring? It's getting very hot and humid here. Should they be planted in afternoon shade? Maybe wait till they get a bit bigger? Currently they are …

First frost of the year and some advice
by smithgn- 31 replies
- 1.7k views
It's looking as if tonight (Saturday night), I'm getting my first frost according to wunderground, weather.com and accuweather. Forecasts are for anywhere between 30 and 32 degrees tonight. I've got my temperatures gauges set out and I'm ready to go. Hows everyone else faring? And the advice I promised: Don't ever, ever try to cover your plants with frost cloths in 20+ MPH gusts of winds. You're fighting a losing battle. Trust me. Scot- did you by any chance receive any snow this morning? I got a call early from my girlfriend who told me to look outside the window. Luckily, there was no snow out my way but she said she got about an inch (she's in Lexington/Red B…

Here's my palms & protection plan for the winter

Album: http://imgur.com/a/uAmxD Here's what I planted recently. The Washy was planted in August, and the Trachys were planted two weeks ago. I don't know if it's smart to plant these in the fall, but they were $50 a pop at Lowes. The climate here is usually hot, windy, and dry. The polar vortex low was around +5, but we rarely stay below freezing for an entire day, and the winters are pretty dry, with maybe 10 snowy/rainy events per winter. Even when that happens, the ground goes back to being bone dry in a couple of days. I'm not concerned about the Trachys; I'm planning to toss some of the little Christmas lights around them. I know the Washingtonia will nee…

These are all pictures from this weekend. Everything went through 13F last winter and then Ice-a-geddon in February. We even had Jim Cantore in town, so you know it was bad. Sabal uresana with Cycas taitungensis (l) and C. taitun x C. revoluta (right) S. causiarum Washingtonia filibusta (small) and W. robusta (trunk only). There is a little B. armata in the background. It is about 7' tall. S. causiarum x S. palmetto (l) and S. palmetto ® That's a clump of 3 male and one female C. taitun. x C. revoluta For scale, the cycad clump is about 6' tall. All photos taken with my phone, so pardon the quality....or lack thereof.

Sabal miamiensis (the seed came from Fairchild in Miami) Early morning in the Sabal collection. This area was planted in July of 2002 and contains many cultivars of S. minor from Hatteras, North Carolina to Oklahoma and the Piedmont of Georgia to the panhandle of Florida. They don't all look the same or grow the same size under exactly the same conditions. This is what the same area looked like when it was first planted:

Palms in Augusta, GA
by JLeVert- 20 replies
- 3.1k views
Augusta, GA is right on the Fall Line - that is, the elevation drops quickly from the Piedmond area of Georgia which goes up over 1,000' to the Lower Coastal Plain. Downtown Augusta is 135' above sea level, but only a mile or so away, the elevation goes up to 440'. Those upper elevations are actually hugh sand dunes from when the ocean was up to Augusta. I don't remember that time since it was 40,000,000 years ago, but the climate and soils still reflect the unique situation of the area. Lots of palms can grow here, but the number of species is limited because we are far enough inland to allow for severe freezes every 25 years or so. S. minor is native. Serenoa and …

Cold Hardy Madagascar Palms 1 2
by Alicehunter2000- 42 replies

I was wondering if there are any other palms and plants from Madagascar that would be worth trying in Zone 8b through 9b? Bismarkia is turning out to be a great (albeit marginal) palm for 9a. Dypsis decipiens shows a lot of promise as well. Any thoughts? Does anyone have a good climate map (zone map) for Madagascar? Do they experience freezing temps anywhere on the island?

First I want to say that the data will also be entered into the Freeze Damage section for individual species. Pictures will be entered with my hand held but discussion will primarily be with laptop for ease of use. Hopefully pictures will be worth a thousand words. First up a ray of sunshine.

Ranking Hybrid Palms in Terms of Cold Hardiness 1 2
by Scot from SC- 57 replies
- 6.2k views
I know various threads exist on this site looking at different hybrids and discussing their cold hardiness. I would love to start one thread where people contribute temperatures their hybrids have experienced and the extent of the damage exhibited. Please list your zone and area if it is not in your avatar since a zone 8 here in South Carolina is a bit different than one in Oregon. Pictures are always welcome too. Thank you in advance. Here is a list of ones I would like to see commentary on: (please add to list if you have information) 1) Butia X Jubaea 2) BJ X B 3) BJ X J 4) BJ X Q 5) J X B 6) J X Q 7) B X Q 8) B. Paraguyensis X Queen 9) Yatay X Queen …

Hey guys, I purchased a 6 and 1/2 ft Mexican fan palm 5 months ago at a local nursery here in Connecticut of all places. I know the chances of survival if planted are slim with no protection,so she was potted and placed on my porch. For the upcoming winter I built a greenhouse, more of a plastic enclosure over and around my deck, sealing it completely , that keeps the wind and some cold out. I have a space heater to keep temps warm, so that is not my issue, however I need to know how much ARTIFICIAL light is necessary to keep her alive! My porch probably only got 4 or 5 hours of direct sunlight in the summer, and therefore she has some browning and doesnt look as good as …

Hi All, The newest leaf of my Jubaea is much smaller then the other leaves. The palm is in a pot and just moved indoors again. Could this cause the problem or can it be lack of nutrients? A new spear is emerging by the way. Thank you for any ideas or help!

Head sawed off my Butyagrus...
by Waterboyke- 18 replies

Hi all, First of all sorry for my bad english (google translation) I'm Dimi and i'm from Belgium (Europe) This topic contains a lot of pictures, hopefully this is not disturbing? Since the end of 2009 I got a Butyagrus. Bought as a small seedling and has grown a lot over the years. He grew very fast, but in the summer of 2013, he suddenly started to make much smaller leaves At the end of that summer there was only a mini spear in the heart and then he stopped growing. Early this year (2014) I planted it in open ground, he began never to grow back, but the strain started to become thicker and tear open. In August, I was afraid he would destroy himself and I hav…

Could Dypsis decipiens be the only Crownshafted Palm for Zone 9a 1 2
by Alicehunter2000- 2 followers

Could Dypsis decipiens be the only reliable crownshafted palm for zone 9a. This is the conclusion that I am starting to draw as my quest for a hardy crownshafted palm continues. Another contender would be the trunking form of C. radicalis, but this palm is very dainty and doesn't compare to D. decipiens IMO. In California and other Meditteranian climates I guess there might be something else that can take temps into the low 20's, but in more sub-tropical climates I think D. decipiens might be all we got. Any thoughts concerning hardy crownshafts that can take 20 degrees F. (-6.67 C.) as an ultimate brief low?
