Oregon grown Butia eriospatha
by Chester B- 11 replies

I thought I'd start a progress thread on the second Butia in my garden. This time I purchased a Butia eriospatha that was grown from seed here in Oregon. I picked the bluest one out of a few dozen specimens and planted it on August 12, 2019. It is much bluer in appearence than my Butia odorata so I hope it retains this color. 6 weeks later and this palm has surprised me. It's put out two fronds so far - I guess it was desperate to get out of the pot.

Northerly Palms

Living in the UK, it amazes me how much influence the jet stream has on our climate. It's relatively mild all year round - no real hot summers or freezing cold winters. Parts of the south west hardly see any frost, so quite tropical plants can thrive (as long as they don't need serious heat) Here's some palms I've spotted on my travels CIDP @ 50 degrees north in Cornwall Butia @ 50 degrees north in Cornwall CIDP @ 53 degrees north in Wales

Droopy Trachy Fronds
by Rightstuff15- 8 replies
- 4.2k views
I have three Trachycarpus fortunei windmills. The one in the picture has fronds that are not as stiff or thick as my other two. I bought it from Fast Growing Trees a few years ago. It puts out new fronds each year and seems very healthy. Just wondering if anyone would know what variety this may be or why the fronds are thin and droopy?

Differences? They're about eight feet apart, four inch caliper... First picture will show the two, nitida being more spread out and Decora seems more compact. - Ray.

Have I doomed my trachies?

First time posting so first off - hello everyone, I'm a big fan of the forum. Ok so here's my situation... I've just recently gotten into palm trees and have been trying to give myself a crash course on the do's and don'ts and just bulking up on knowledge in general. However some knowledge is gained through making mistakes as we all know. I got a screaming deal on some mature trachycarpus fortunei palms back in December of 18. I picked up 5 of them for $625 but had to dig up and move them myself. The weekend before Christmas they were out of the ground and replanted at my place. Relocating them was by no means fun but they all seemed to take. They pushed out …

Clackamas Palms
by Chester B- 10 replies
We have a lot of Trachycarpus palms planted around here but you don't often see much else. To my surprise I was driving on the backside of the Clackamas Town Center and across the street an office building has a few palmy surprises. There were many triple plantings of Trachycarpus with seedlings all around their bases, plus a pretty huge Chamaerops cluster. The Sabals were a grouping of three as well and had seed stalks from last year full of seed. Do you think its still viable? I grabbed a couple and crushed them between my fingers and the outer husk fell away but inside were small hard seeds.

Advice for Mule Planting Location
by DAVEinMB- 2 followers

Good morning everyone. I just picked up a couple of 65 gallon mule palms and wanted to get some opinions on planting location. I know there are a ton of factors that go into how cold tolerant these plants are and I have no knowledge of their specific genetics. As the crow flies I'm about 5 miles off the coast in the myrtle beach area, zone 8b. My plan was to plant them in an open area of my front yard that receives sun all day long, including early morning sun. I could put them in a more protected area which may provide a better microclimate but I'd rather keep them out in the open. As a side note these palms spent over a year in containers on the nursery's lot howe…

BuJubaea unhealthy fronds
by LivistonaFan- 7 replies
I bought this ButiaXJubaea F1 about two months ago online. I knew that it had extremely stretched fronds (there were some more, I did cut many of them in the last weeks), but considering the price tag and size of the plant, I ordered it nevertheless. First, I repotted it (though there were just few but relatively healthy roots) and after two weeks in part shade, I then put it in full sun. But instead of making more compact, darker green fronds, the new ones look even worse than the old ones. Do you think it was too long in a very shady position and needs some time to regenerate or is there another problem? Sry for the bad quality of the phot…

About 2 years ago I dumped a bunch of dirt and ungerminated seeds in a rubble pile. I was cleaning the area out and uncovered this little gem. I had so many different types of ungerminated seeds that I’m not sure I’ll ever know what this little guy is. Most of the seeds were Sabal species with some Uncommon Trachycarpus species possibly other cold hardy species as well. Any thoughts??

Where to buy palms in Atlanta area?

Hi I am just getting back into the hobby. I don't want to go crazy this time as in past years buying like a nut. I visited big box stores yesterday and was surprised at the fact that they mostly have nothing beside Majesties and parlour palms. In past years tropical or hardy palms were legions along with some bananas. Even pike nursery had hardly anything and what they had is so expensive. I know of Randy's nursery in Lawrenceville but it's so far from me, I will have to visit it only when I am closer for other matters. I am in Cherokee county if this matters. Thxs for your help Pat
