I got more information from the nursery man, who planted this palm in November 2019. I inquired about the use of various fungicide's recommended by connoisseur, Steve Stern. None of these has been used on this specimen. That stated, it would probably help substantially if they were used. During this time frame, the minimum temperature recorded at PBIA was 37°F. Low 40°F (43F) temperatures nearly every year at the airport during this time frame. At all times, the median temperature well exceeded the necessary Koeppen temperature required for tropical rendering. In fact, most months median temperatures were closer to 70°F than the required 64.8°F. This palm is lo…

A biig thanks for @Matty B for showing us in California what is possible. Maybe he will chime in and reveal his sorcery…. I mean growing experiences. Not wanting to hijack Bubba’s Satekentia in California post. I hope other growers in other non-tropical localities share their experiences and pictures. My experience so far… In January Winter of 2016 / 2017 I bought 2 small, yellowish one gallon Satekentia from KW Palms & Cycads in Lake Elsinore. The two palms were small and cheap so why not Then in July of 2018 I was reading a post in PT. Matty B stated that his Satakentia seemed like it could take more sun than he had thought at firs…

coconut Coconut Palm in my Garden
by shark- 5 replies
This is my green coconut palm in my garden, it's about 1.7 meter tall and it's been growing for about 2 years. I grew it since it was a seedling. I bought it from an online shop with a price for only 1 dollar! Yea it's really cheap in here because i'm living in a tropical country. Then about the watering, i just watered it everyday and give a sunlight. For the soil, i mix it with my clay soil from my garden, organic soil, and composed leaves. It's really beautiful to see it actually, plus the emerging light green leaves. And also, it has almost no problem at all with the coconut that i grew from seedling, maybe just like some little sunburned leaves or anything. Overall, …

San Diego Coconut Trees

I’ll document my SoCal coconut tree journey here. Getting anything bigger than a shriveled up coconut sprout in California is almost impossible for a variety of reasons so I ordered 3 coconut sprouts. I currently have 3 coconuts of unknown varieties. The first was “front yard coconut”This is the earliest photo I have of it but it came in August 2023 half dead with one greenish leaf. This is it now dec 18 2023. It has grown but the growth has been quite slow and undramatic. When I transferred it into the ground in august it really had no roots at all. I’ve read that they eat their coconut for a while but that was strange to see I’ve been fertilizing nothing. Hopefull…

Hey everyone, I have a Phoenix Sylvestris being shipped to me as we speak from California and I should have it in the ground this weekend. I've searched around the forums for a lot of information but I have a few questions I haven't been able to answer. So I'm gonna see if anyone can help here. I've seen several people say not to fertilize the first year to make sure the roots grow strong, so I'll be doing that. But I was wondering if anyone has any idea how much to water a brand new Phoenix? We get a decent amount of rain where I am, especially in spring, so I was just wondering if anyone had some advice about how many times a week etc? I'm orderi…

Help!! Pindo Palm spear pull… is it gone :((

Hey everyone! New to the forum, been a collector of palms since I was a little kid, now I’m 21 and collect for myself. One of my jelly palms in my front yard has suffered a spear pull, and the leaves have begun to sag, but not turn brown. Any chance of survival? Not too harsh of a winter in terms of snow, but I know what really gets them is the temps and frost/wind chills. I’m in Zone 8A, on the coast of Virginia in VA beach.

My palm trees in Ibiza

Hi forumers! I live in Ibiza, Spain, and these are the palm trees that have survived this winter in my garden. The pictures were taken today. Now they are in its ugliest phase of the year. They will look better after the warm period, that starts now. I hope it helps if someone wants to try these palms in a similar climate: - Howea Fosteriana - Dypsis lutescens (this one suffered during the winter but it will certainly recover in the warmer months) - Kentiopsis Oliviformis - Ptychosperma Elegans - Archontophoenix Alexandrae - Roystonea Regia - Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii - Wodyetia Bifurcata -Ravenala Madagascarie…

Would love to see photos of anyone else’s Jubaeopsis caffra. Mine’s been a very slow grower until more recently. Nearly eighteen years old and it’s seemed, for several years, that it was barely growing at all. Here’s the one in my front yard that I’m limiting to two trunks due to lack of enough space for multiple ones. Post away!

Flamethrower struggling! Any ideas?
by Vic008- 5 replies
So got this flamethrower about 6 months ago, started out fine but over the really rainy winter and cold winter (for the area) here in Long Beach California it’s looking a ragged. some background…Transitioned it to full sun over 3 months and the last 3 months in full sun has been getting progressively worse. It has a spike that was growing pretty fast until about December then almost completely stopped. Has been fertilized with fertilizer spikes and I water it about every 3 days with drip irrigation for about 3 min for a total of about 2 gallons. I’m pretty new to growing palms started last fall any direction would be appreciated. Thank you!

Washingtonia palm maintenance question

Hi! Please help me understand what I should be doing with these palms my parents planted years ago. They had dead fronds trimmed when they were reachable but now I cannot find anyone to trim them and someone told me I actually shouldn’t trim them because they will just fall off/down when ready. Also, is the trunk supposed to do this (sort of shed)? Any tips appreciated. Located in central Florida and would like to keep them. Thank you.

Good day all. Long time reader, first time poster. I’ve got two questions for you experts, with the first dealing with my European Fan Palm. Noticed around October last year my palm covered in these white dots. I’ve assumed (probably wrong) that it was a fungus and have tried two palm safe items… 1) copper fungicide 2) neem oil I'm beginning to think it’s more insect related then fungus since the above mentioned product appeared safe for palms, but, wanted to get your ideas on where to go next. The spots are on all parts of the tree, as indicated in the photos The palm is growing well and plenty of new growth but would like to see these…

Black spots on top and bottom of palm leaves

Hello An in ground palm whose name I don't know has black spots on its leaves. Underneath each leaf are little worm-looking things that easily scrape off with my nail. In the past, I've seen the paver bricks underneath the fronds "stained" in the same black as the one on top of the leaves. Is this a fungus and pest issue? And what can I do? Thank you.

Help with palm ID
by BWKennedy- 4 replies

Hello! I've had this palm for about 8 years. It was given to me from an old abandoned nursery that was being demolished. I've never been able to identify the species. It 2-3 years to finally settle in and produce healthy foliage, but it has been doing great ever since. It took a beating from hurricane Ian 2 years ago, but recovered much more quickly that I anticipated. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey Everyone. Why are these three specimens so hard to find around Orange and Lake County Florida. I am hunting for a few larger 8-12' double or triple Archontophoenix Alexandrae, Archonphoenix Cunninghamiana and so far in all my hunting the only thing I have found so far was one single Archontophoenix Alexandrae and that was at Traveling Trees Garden Center in Clermont and it was only about 4' tall. I would also love to find a 4-6' Archontophoenix purpurea. I reached out to MB Palms today via email, but reading here that he really doesn't like to work with the public, and I just missed his open house this weekend as I was out of town until late…
