Chamaedorea adscendens seeds starting to ripen
by happypalms- 11 replies

A little palm that needs no introduction from me on palm talk. They speak for themselves as far as ease of growing, germinating and pollinating. A beautiful little understory palm that I have cracked the growing code, producing hundreds of hand pollinated seeds every year. I have noticed the ones that produce good amounts of seeds seem to rest bi annually not producing large flowers, then the next year they flower with large flowers. Just an observation when I see my chamaedorea daily in the garden, it’s easy to learn the palm and what it does.

At it again this time a few nice Japanese rhapis. The first one is a seikonishiki var while the second is a fujinoyuki, rhapis laosensis var with Snow White variegation hence the name Fujinoyuki after Mount Fuji. I just love them there so beautiful and easy to grow. These ones are for you @Harry’s Palms I was thinking of you when I purchased them after your trip to @DoomsDave mega nursery.

Random spear pull
by TropicsEnjoyer- 0 replies
So today I noticed that my lady palm seemed quite happy and appeared to be opening a new frond since the spear was looking split. But upon closer inspection I realized the base of the spear was a bit brown, and unfortunately it pulled out without any struggle. Now Im wondering, why? For the 4 months i’ve had it, it has been strictly an indoor palm. So cold damage is ruled out. The only thing I can think of is that I took it outside to water it and wash the leaves one or two times. Could it be that a drop of water was all it took to brew some rot in the crown? Thankfully, only 1 of the 5 or so stems got spear pull, but it happened to be the biggest and nicest looking stem…

Dypsis Prestoniana and Carlsmithii planting
by PalmSam- 7 replies
Hi All, I am looking for some advise on planting a Dypsis Prestoniana and Carlsmithii. I've read that since they're heeled palms it's best to plant them on a raised mound as they will pull themselves down. My garden has only about 10–15 cm of topsoil, and below that it's really dense, heavy clay which is very hard to dig, even when wet. Does anyone know how high I should raise the mound for these palms? Also, does the carlsmithii need to be raised as much as the prestoniana? I've seen suggestions that it might not need to be raised quite as much. Thanks!

I have three Carpoxylon macrospermum in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. They are about 12 years old, range in height from 3 to 5 metres of trunk. For some years they have flowered and fruited prolifically, but the fruit drops off when about 2cm long. Only once did it set, two years ago. What can I try?

A few nice palms in Coffs botanical gardens
by happypalms- 4 replies
A vis to the gardens today for an afternoon walk. Always looking at the palms and trying to find ones I have not seen before. A nice group planting of some normanbya. With a few of the more common and unusual characters in the garden. Iam not sure what they will do with the pelagodoxa in a few years time. And I might have to keep an eye on the crysophilla palm that’s flowering and see Rick the curator about them.

Under appreciated is how beautiful palms can look at night. The way the frond casts a silhouette that is unlike any other tree. Especially my Phoenix Canariensis I have captured just now. It might be difficult but I would like to see your best night time palm shots.

San Diego Coconut Trees 1 2

I’ll document my SoCal coconut tree journey here. Getting anything bigger than a shriveled up coconut sprout in California is almost impossible for a variety of reasons so I ordered 3 coconut sprouts. I currently have 3 coconuts of unknown varieties. The first was “front yard coconut”This is the earliest photo I have of it but it came in August 2023 half dead with one greenish leaf. This is it now dec 18 2023. It has grown but the growth has been quite slow and undramatic. When I transferred it into the ground in august it really had no roots at all. I’ve read that they eat their coconut for a while but that was strange to see I’ve been fertilizing nothing. Hopefull…

I have a few Bentinckia condapanna from the Big Island nursery we all love so much. One of them is a double and should be super interesting as it gets bigger. Today I arrived to a palm enthusiast’s home with the plan to bring home a Dypsis lanceolata or a Chambeyronia hookeri. I didn’t come home with either. I noticed a nice Bentinckia bursting out of a 15g. I plan to plant it out first thing tomorrow morning. The location sees morning and early afternoon full sun this time of year, then filtered sun at 1:30 and full shade by 2:30. Please share any photos or experiences with your Bentinckia.

Sowing a few licuala varieties
by happypalms- 0 replies

A few licuala seeds to sow. With a nice batch of triphylla seeds, some licuala furcata then a few cordata and last by some licuala petiolata seeds. Now sit back and wait and wait for licuala seeds they seem to take forever. Nothing special to look at now but that’s the hidden beauty in a seed for you.

I came across something very unusual last night. Amongst a group of Sabal etonia I recently germinated, I noticed that this one seedling has two eophylls! I have never seen this before and was wondering if anyone else has. I assume that two eophylls means that two spears exist.

Hi, going on Google Maps in a town not too far away I found a palm that I could not identify and that seems to me Roystonea Regia or Howea Forsteriana. However I ask for the intervention of those who are more expert than me. Can you identify it? https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z9bSt3JhK5EK9NWZ7 (I am referring to the palm tree that has slightly burnt leaves) Thanks a lot
