Wallichia disticha
by Rafael- 8 replies

Hello everyone, I have a Wallichia disticha planted in the ground, and to my surprise, I’ve just noticed what seems to be a new shoot emerging only about 3 cm from the main trunk. From what I know, W. disticha is supposed to be a solitary palm, so I found this quite unexpected. It’s definitely not a seedling — I don’t have any fruiting specimens nearby — so it looks like a basal or adventitious shoot coming directly from the main plant. Has anyone here ever experienced this with Wallichia disticha or seen a similar case? Did the new shoot develop into an independent stem, or did it eventually die back? Any insight or pe…

Does anyone have experience with these? I'm going to keep it potted to bring in during colder temps, but I'm concerned about fungus with the fronds because so broad. Do you notice if they attach more problems than other palms? Thanks

Palm AI Identification

I have tried a few different plant apps to diagnose issues and identify species. The tech is getting better, but it is far from reliable. Just as chat AI tools provide different results based how questions are asked., I have found that lighting, angles, and background are just as important for photo AI. These pics are all of the same palm.

Tahina Spectabilis Seed Scam I want to report this guy or this person. They claim to be selling Tahina Spectabilis seeds. The person doesn't want to send photos of the seeds. Neither of them. And the person selling the seeds sent me a stolen photo of Tahina that isn't theirs. Be careful with these people. They are serious scammers.

A few more seedlings that have germinated. The Oraniopsis are still germinating more than 18 months later so very sporadic germination. The rest were fairly fast taking around 3 months. A few nice ones for the collection.

Can anyone identify this seed? It has the same appearance as a Sabal palm seed except much smaller in size. It has the flat bottom and even the “eye” where the root would come out. Obviously much much smaller.

This sp must be the Hyphaena of southwest Asia or are those seeds from the southern most population in the Arabian peninsula and Baluchistan?

Palm tree cultivation at the end of the world

Some new seed orders are arriving in the southern hemisphere. I expect good results. These results will have to be evident at the end of the world (Chile), where winters are very cold and apocalyptic. Even so, there are palm trees that can withstand and establish themselves very well.

Dypsis Baronii “Black Stem” updates please!! 1 2

I’ve looked thru these forum pages and can’t find any recent thread that has updated pictures of the infamous “Black Stem”. There seems to be definite inconsistencies with many plants confirming their genuine. I got mine from @Josh-O last year and finally planted planted it out recently. It is facing North protected from the South and gets filtered afternoon sun from the West. For a “slow” plant, mine seems to be trucking along and even started pushing another spear to start clumping. Let’s see some updated pics of all these Black Stem plants that were all the rage 5-7yrs ago. -dale

Hey everyone. I received some Foxtail Palm seeds today, and I would like to know what is considered “good” and “bad” seed. Several of the seeds I received have soft spots on their ends, and one has what appears to be slight peeling on its end. Is this normal? Thanks for any input. Photo of the seed with slight peeling on its end:

My Foxtail Palm has given me problems for almost a year but this is how bad it's gotten. It was planted as part of the landscape package with the house and we use palm fertilizer and there is a sprinkler head not 2 feet from it. Is it beyond saving? The fertilizer we use is called Perfect Palm.

Fun Fact: There's a mexican Chamaedorea in every US dollar
by idontknowhatnametuse- 2 replies

Did you guys know that what gives US dollars their green color are the fronds of Chamaedorea pochutlensis? They are collected in Nayarit and sent to the border with California where the sap is mixed with other chemicals to make it a tint, this tint is expensive and it is also exported to other countries like Japan and Germany. Only this species is used for this because C. pochutlensis fronds remain fresh for more time when cut than other Chamaedorea species. https://elblogpuertanorte.blogspot.com/2009/06/con-jihuite-nayarita-dan-color-dolares.html?m=1 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity&set=a.853787421343728

Random question that came to mind.
by TropicsEnjoyer- 1 reply

So I was just randomly thinking, what would happen if you applied keiki paste to small palms or a palm in general. I know that stuff is really popular in the orchid community for making orchids pup out of thin air basically but I wonder how it would affect other monocots such as palms. Like, would it make a seedling grow two heads or something? Has anyone tested this? I remember someone made a post a while back asking about applying giberellic acid to palms as an experiment, I think for the same idea.

Cheap Venturi fertiliser system for palms
by happypalms- 0 replies
A great way to fertigate your plants is with a cheap eBay Venturi. Just mix up the desired liquid fertiliser and the Venturi does the rest in the strength of the desired fertiliser ratio. A simple EC meter check of of the fertiliser strength coming out off the hose end is all that’s needed to tweak the Venturi dial, higher or lower strength fertiliser. This one is not rocket science and is pretty well much fool proof but…….

On the potting bench Areca mandacanii, Adonidia merrillii variegated, Chamaedorea benzei, physokentia deniisii

A few more seedlings to pot in the wet weather for something to do. Some nice mandacanii wont go astray in the collection along with a physokentia. The chamaedoreas are a welcome garden addition along with a few variegated merrillii for a bit of colour. The usual winter test will determine who lives and who makes the cold weather race.

Some rain finally in the garden
by happypalms- 0 replies
After about 2 months of hot dry weather and temperatures in the high 30s, it has been a hot dry spring, it is finally raining, not a down pour but enough to water the garden and settle the dust well. It’s amazing the amount of rainfall we have had over the last year has been record braking rain. How it dries out so much is incredible in my area. The gum trees drink and store all the water available, the garden gets the excess. In a lot of cases. Iam not going to get the chainsaw out in a hurry I like the gum trees and are a special part of the ecosystem.
