Flamethrower struggling! Any ideas?
by Vic008- 5 replies
So got this flamethrower about 6 months ago, started out fine but over the really rainy winter and cold winter (for the area) here in Long Beach California it’s looking a ragged. some background…Transitioned it to full sun over 3 months and the last 3 months in full sun has been getting progressively worse. It has a spike that was growing pretty fast until about December then almost completely stopped. Has been fertilized with fertilizer spikes and I water it about every 3 days with drip irrigation for about 3 min for a total of about 2 gallons. I’m pretty new to growing palms started last fall any direction would be appreciated. Thank you!

Washingtonia palm maintenance question

Hi! Please help me understand what I should be doing with these palms my parents planted years ago. They had dead fronds trimmed when they were reachable but now I cannot find anyone to trim them and someone told me I actually shouldn’t trim them because they will just fall off/down when ready. Also, is the trunk supposed to do this (sort of shed)? Any tips appreciated. Located in central Florida and would like to keep them. Thank you.

Good day all. Long time reader, first time poster. I’ve got two questions for you experts, with the first dealing with my European Fan Palm. Noticed around October last year my palm covered in these white dots. I’ve assumed (probably wrong) that it was a fungus and have tried two palm safe items… 1) copper fungicide 2) neem oil I'm beginning to think it’s more insect related then fungus since the above mentioned product appeared safe for palms, but, wanted to get your ideas on where to go next. The spots are on all parts of the tree, as indicated in the photos The palm is growing well and plenty of new growth but would like to see these…

Black spots on top and bottom of palm leaves

Hello An in ground palm whose name I don't know has black spots on its leaves. Underneath each leaf are little worm-looking things that easily scrape off with my nail. In the past, I've seen the paver bricks underneath the fronds "stained" in the same black as the one on top of the leaves. Is this a fungus and pest issue? And what can I do? Thank you.

Help with palm ID
by BWKennedy- 4 replies

Hello! I've had this palm for about 8 years. It was given to me from an old abandoned nursery that was being demolished. I've never been able to identify the species. It 2-3 years to finally settle in and produce healthy foliage, but it has been doing great ever since. It took a beating from hurricane Ian 2 years ago, but recovered much more quickly that I anticipated. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey Everyone. Why are these three specimens so hard to find around Orange and Lake County Florida. I am hunting for a few larger 8-12' double or triple Archontophoenix Alexandrae, Archonphoenix Cunninghamiana and so far in all my hunting the only thing I have found so far was one single Archontophoenix Alexandrae and that was at Traveling Trees Garden Center in Clermont and it was only about 4' tall. I would also love to find a 4-6' Archontophoenix purpurea. I reached out to MB Palms today via email, but reading here that he really doesn't like to work with the public, and I just missed his open house this weekend as I was out of town until late…

Hello all, I have recently learned of a population of Washingtonia filifera growing along the Kern River in Kern County, California. I actually first saw the palms when I was scrolling through the photos for Sequoia National Forest and came across a photo of what looked like a native grove of filifera growing along a river lined with steep cliffs. The abundance of grasses and trees on the cliffs made me wonder about the location of the photo, clearly different from the Sonoran Desert ecosystem where the palm is normally found. I forgot about these palms until I saw these photos of them in the IPS magazine this year. It lists them as being a native population "at the …

Hello, over the next few years I would like to take this open backyard grass lawn and turn it into a dense what would be essentially a rainforest. have attached some photos below for inspiration. I live in Florida, zone A I believe on the east coast. I have also attached what my backyard consists of now. The patio will be screened in and the middle area in the first photo will have a walkway that leads to a pergola. The only shade tree I currently have is a live oak, and the lemon and lime tree planted in the yard will be put in large pots. The yard is closed in essentially on one side by clusia and as well on the other. Trying to decide if I do more large shade trees o…

Anyone got one of these from Patric? If so, share a picture! Seems like potentially a nice cross for us in the southeast. Maybe enough Butia to let it tolerate our heat and humidity, but mostly Parajubaea and Jubaea for good looks.

Lytocaryum weddellianum (miniature coconut palm) flowers
by David_Sweden- 1 follower

My indoors Lytocaryum weddellianum has produced flower stalks regularly for over 3 years. But I always thought it looked like it gave up before there were any actual flowers. The last few months the stalks have been a bit bigger but still nothing that looks like flowers on it. And a couple of weeks ago I thought I felt the scent of flowers (there are no other "potential flowers" in this room, but my sense of smell has been suffering from Covid or repeated colds). Today I saw some "small balls" on the flower stalk. I'm wondering if this could actually be fruit? Meaning the extremely inconspicuous even smaller things beside the "balls" are very tiny flowers? What do flower…

Stilt Palm List Revisted 1 2

I figured I’d better begin with a photo before launching into a long prelude of text. Areca novohibernica, one of a group of 5 planted 2-3 years ago. Fast growers! After reading the replies from many of us beginning more than a decade ago I decided to start a new topic, but also provide a link to the earlier one that I did not initiate. Some lovely photos so don’t miss it. In that old topic I knew even less than I do now (it was 2012 and I still lived in Virginia) and I came up with a group of palms that under appropriate conditions might form stilt roots. I realize that botanists and/or PT readers can direct us as to whi…

Dear Friends i have a serious question to all and to those who have collected seeds of the talipot palms - (Corypha umbraculifera)... Since most of you who have visited my Corypha's threads would have seen some of these buties in full bloom.but recently i went to the same place but i saw lots of these seeds fallen in the ground which are green in colour and it seems that this perticular tree is putting down seeds in plenty without the seeds getting riped in the tree...is this behaviour normal to the all the coryopha's.If so,will i have to wait for few more months to collect the rippened black seeds ? since i collected around 30 seeds, while i was there a…
