Couldn't find the photo if I took one, but I saw a 25ft+ tall Phoenix reclinata in Mission Bay, San Diego last year with all suckers trimmed away to present it as a single stemmed palm. It looked good. I imagine it would be a bit of work to maintain it in this fashion. Perhaps the one I saw did not have a vigorously caespitose habit to begin with? Anyone growing one this way? Looked like this photo from palmerasyjardines.com

Encephalartos natalensis question…
by Breaktheory- 9 replies

Hello friends! I just picked up a large Encephalartos natalensis - looks very healthy, waiting to take fronds down until it’s planted to avoid getting stabbed. question: all I’m seeing for new growth are these little brown nubs - is this normal? Some of the other cycads seemed to be blooming.

palm list by mature height
by flplantguy- 3 replies
Does anyone know of or have a list of palm trees by mature height? Either/or the reproductive height, or final height at old age in cultivation? Im daydreaming a sunken conservatory and those numbers all put in a list would be helpful. I'll make one if not, palmpedia has the numbers mostly just in each category. Then people can plan around their dreams with reality; so many people try seedlings inside only to have it die when it's too large and freezes to death outside. Knowing what to expect in advance may help people make good choices too, or decide it's worth the effort.

On the occasion of the first pinnate leaf of my N°1401 I open a new thread for this only little known species Lytocaryum insigne TOLEDO 1944 (now again Syagrus insignis BECC. 1916, former Cocos insignis MART. 1854 and Glaziova insignis DRUDE 1881) Please post your pics of L insigne here, too! It doesn’t matter if they are in pots, in gardens, or (best of all) in habitat. I begin with my oldest baby N°1401, born 2014-02-14 during the cold winter in Germany, grown up together with nine other siblings, out of which six emigrated into other European countries, so that at my place now are remaining still four plants: N°1401, 1402, 1404, and 1408. Here comes the bigg…

Just wondering if wodyetia can grow in clay, rocky low drainage soil. I suppose that in the tropics it wouldn't have a problem, but what about in Mediterranean climate zone 10a in palma de Mallorca? With relatively wet winter?

New Caledonia Palms

I am starting a topic here on New Caledonia palms to call attention to the exciting tentative itinerary for the long awaited 2024 Biennial. Please add photos of any New Cal palms you have seen anywhere. Tell us your successes and hard luck stories trying to grow them so we can congratulate you (and learn hints to success) or join those of us who want to try some species again. The list of endemic palms that are along the proposed day trips is amazing and I want to learn more to be able to recognize them in habitat. Key points to distinguish the species at any size from your reading or growing experience would be a bonus.

Apparently, there are relatively few owners of the hybrid butia capitata (or odorata) x parajubaea cocoides. For those of you who own one, what has been your experience as regards leaf burn. At what low temperature do you experience any more than slight damage to the foliage? I am aware of one that was damaged during the December cold snap in northern California, but it was a small one. Any other reports would be useful and much appreciated. Thank you.

Random overlooked chamaedorea sprout
by Patrick- 1 reply
I have radicalis everywhere and this sprout showed up a couple years ago. I assumed it was radicalis when it was small. I was just out here relaxing with a soda and I realized, "hey, wait a minute, that's a plumosa!" The different direction leaflets were a giveaway. Strange, and lucky! I tried seeds of plumosa several years ago and nothing sprouted. I dumped out the medium and I guess this must have sprouted; but it was like 5 years ago that I did all of that! Anyone else come across these unexpected surprises? There's three chams in this messy picture. Tepejilote in the back, radicalis in the front and then the plumosa in the very front. Cheers!

Copernicia baileyana through the years(2011 to 2023)

I knew they were supposed to be slow, but after 12 years from a "small above the soil" 5 gallon my bailey has weathered 2 hurricane force wind events and a resulting spear mold infection that took 2 years to fully eradicate. IRMA had the worst hurricane damage by far, newer leaves cut the older ones up good with petiole thorns. It had half the leaves shredded on the windward side. Currently its 4-5 leaves short of a full crown but its growing quickly now. Three pics: august 2011 6 months after planting showing a new flush of leaves. Second pic 2017 just prior to iRMA and last pic today sept 4 2023. By comparison with the peak of the house roof of 16', it looks to be…

Trithrinax campestris putting out yellow leaves?

I've grown this from a strap leaf plant I bought 15+ years ago, it's finally starting to put out its first palmate leaves and they're yellowish. What could cause this? I'm really worried, I'd hate to lose this thing. It's spent most of its life in Illinois and always chugged along, I wonder if it doesn't like the heat of Texas?

Remarkable palm genus from Vietnam **new-to-science today**
by Bill Baker (Kew)- 1 follower

Today, a new palm genus from Vitenam,Truongsonia lecongkietii, was published. This new palm is so peculiar that it required not only a new genus, but also a new tribe in the classification of palms (Truongsonieae) to accommodate it. Most extrpardinarily, its closest relative is the African genus Podococcus! It may be diminutive and unspectacular, but botanically it is even more remarkable than the discovery of Tahina (personal opinion, of course - I realise that this is heresy!) Unfortunately, only 10-15 plants are known in the wild, rendering it Critically Endangered. You can follow the link below to freely download the full article pdf, which is heavily illustrate…

Another New Palm Garden in East Hawaii 1 2 3 4

By way of introduction, I moved to East Hawaii in 2012 after twenty years of living in Houston. I suppose I am an early climate refugee. Texas is famous for hot summers, but in 2011 Texas suffered a heat wave and drought that shattered previous records. Every day in August of that year the temperature in Houston was over 100 degrees (39-43 C). In olden days, Houston rarely got over a very humid 93 degrees in the summer before an afternoon thunderstorm would cool the city off a bit. I decided in a world of global warming Houston was becoming unlivable. I visited the Big Island to look at real estate and was surprised at the very affordable prices in the Puna District. I lo…

CIDP Advice

Hi palm experts So I have a CIDP in my front yard...overall it looks pretty good (your thoughts on how it looks is apprecited). I know I have seasonal yellowing on the old fronds and I use Palm Spikes from TreeHelp.com. I just hammered 20 spikes in about a month ago, but I am wondering how I can better fertilize the tree without burning the Jasmine ground cover underneath?..A few years a go I threw on some granular palm fertilizer, watered it in and it still fried the Jasmine (wife was not happy). Any advice is apprecited to make this tree look a little better and should I continue the spikes in the spring? Thanks

Yesterday evening, I noticed what appeared to be a variegated Chamaedorea microspadix. To me, it looks variegated, but this could be a nutritional issue. There is a new leaf in the process of emerging that should give an answer to the coloration. If this plant is variegated, can Chamaedorea microspadix be cloned by its offsets?

Planting a royal palm in mallorca 1 2

Hey! I'm going to purchase a royal palm from my local garden center more a less 3 m royal and I wonder how to plant it correctly in a poor nutrient soil and low drainage my plan was make a big hole a more less like 1.5 or 2 m deep and 1.5 m wide mix the native soil with rocks compost and sand for improving the drainage and nutrients on the soil I will fertilize it too, so I suppose it will be okay I live in a pretty marginal climate for the royal they do okay, but the leafs don't look that good they kinda look like in L.A. a little bit beat on the fronds. Cold shouldn't be a problem in my climate zone 10a I would have in the south side of the house and protected by a wall…

The PSSC is having a garden tour at two cool gardens in San Diego in September 16 (edited), 2023 @ellidro; and one in Encinitas the other in the city proper @Matt in SD. Here’s me next to Matt’s Chrysalidocarpus (Dypsis) “Big Red”; it’s almost as fat as me! And a lot purtier! But don’t take my word - come see for yourselves!
