Caryota Mitis stem removal
by Harry’s Palms- 4 replies
There has been discussion on the forum about cutting out terminal stems after flowering with this Caryota species. My experience is that they continue to send out puppies after the stem is removed . I have a few of these around my house that I have done this with over the years. Last year the one out front flowered and this year I cut it down …don’t want that thing to fall. It is very heavy for its size . Ask @DoomsDave what happens when an unplanned fall occurs! Harry I left a few feet of stem in the ground Removal went pretty smooth , not my first of this procedure….wont be my last! No special tools required! Neighboring Chrysalidiocarpus Decarii can now…

Systemic fungicide for queen palms
by palmluver- 9 replies
I'm finally getting some healthy fronds on my queen palms. I think I've got a handle on fertilizing needs (manganese, soil acidifier, etc). They are getting a bit tall to easily apply copper fungicide to the crowns, though I am still managing it with a small powered garden sprayer. At this time I would like to add a systemic fungicide to hopefully fortify them if there comes a point that I can't handle the crown spray. I already lost a whole row of queens in another section of my property, so looking to do all I can to save these last 4. (Short of hiring a tree company, which I also tried with the others but it was more expensive than just replacing the trees.) So, …

Germinating Brahea Armata seeds.
by BayAndroid- 12 replies
So I picked up a bunch of seeds from this Brahea Armata today. I'm curious about how to go about germinating them. My current plan is to let them soak for 24 hours on the heat pad, remove any of the fruit that I can, I guess soak again in some hydrogen peroxide (how long? Should I dilute? It's 3%) then I will put them in a zip lock with some wet paper towel and wait for root to form. Let me know if I should approach differently. How long do you think it will take? Photos are of the tree I grabbed the seeds from. All the seeds were gathered from the ground with fruit on them.

Little chamaedorea adscendens are flowering
by happypalms- 0 replies
My chamaedorea adscendens are flowering just at the near the end of autumn, a good indication that the seeds will be ready soon as well. So I will be keeping a close eye on the flowers and go about hand pollination of the flower’s using daily observations, to assist in the timing for collection of the pollen and for receptive females. After a few years of doing it I have learned what signs to look for. If the rain keeps up while they are flowering there will Be less seeds. So fingers crossed more seeds to harvest.

We need a bit of color on the board. Post away! I'll start with some Calyptrocalyx in the garden, all going off at the same time. Understory gems for any garden if they will grow for you. C. leptostacyhs, C. pachystachys, and C. pachystachys 'mottled.' Tim

A top little bit of colour from the new leaves as seedlings the wallichiana. These ones have survived 3 winters so a tough cool tolerant on in the iguanura genus. There just starting to get a move on past the baby seedling stage. Looking forward to these ones in the garden.

Masoala Madagascariensis growing slowly as seedlings
by happypalms- 0 replies

Another one I germinated from seeds. They took a long time to germinate 12 months and not a lot from about 30 seeds I think. And there slow growing for the age of them. But an interesting palm that’s not going to set seeds in my lifetime so slow to grow. I will try to get them in the ground as soon as possible.

Mule palm early diagnosis
by palmluver- 1 reply
Over the past year, I replaced a row of declining queen palms with these mule palms. They are putting out new fronds, but I'm noticing that some of the fronds are developing grainy light colored spots. At times depending on how the sunlight is shining some seem to take on an orange tinge. Does this seem like a nutritional deficiency or more like some type of fungus? They are getting what I thought was a sufficient application of granular palm fertilizer and even some additional manganese.

More rain again and the garden is looking like Hawaii
by happypalms- 10 replies
A tough call saying it’s like Hawaii, but the amount of we have been getting is incredible. I have never seen this much rain before in my area. I have seen it as wet but not 1150mm in three months. One place is up to 2000mm in my area that’s a lot of water, and the garden is looking like it’s straight out of Hawaii only difference is we are going into winter.

Let’s try this again haha… I posted this on “freebies” but that was by mistake… I’ve had this Copernicia Hospita for 2 years now. Wondering if there’s a specific soil type best suited for Copernicias. Is there a risk that it might revert?

Dypsis carlsmithii flat side
by PalmSam- 1 follower

Hi all, I went to the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens the other day and saw a carlsmithii. I always thought they grew like a decaryi or prestoniana, with that triangle shape, which they kind of do, but it looked like it was slowly twisting as it got older. So now I’m wondering, should I bother planting mine with the flat side facing the way I want, or will it just end up turning anyway? Does this twisting only apply to when it's matured?

Palm Help Post Malibu Fire
by R-Banger- 17 replies

Hello everyone, been a long time lurker on here. Learned a lot from you all. My home unfortunately burned down in the Palisades fire but some of my trees survived. My question is my alfie has burned fronds and was wondering if I should cut them off. They are singed but some of the stems are still green. Just saw there may be some black spots too today so I am going to go hit it hard with some copper fungicide. Hoping I can save it along with my 2 hyophorbe indicas that made it. Kind of blown away at their resilience along with some of my heliconias. I went back and the heliconias had shoots coming out like crazy so I dug them up and transplanted to our rental. Bummed beca…

Trachycarpus nanus in Australia

Not sure how he did it, but Mr Wilson @palmtreesforpleasure sweet talked me into donating my 3 large juvenile Trachycarpus nanus to one of the botanical gardens he’s involved with down South 😂. In all seriousness, it was a venture I was happy to be involved with to facilitate future seed production of this species within Australia. Fast forward a few weeks and a packet of T. nanus seed arrived at my door, which I did not ask for. Just shows what a true gent that man is.

is it possible for Chamaedorea Gaussia Howea to hybridize ?? howea and gaussia perents within 2.5m reach. and many Chamaedoreas. potted plants found under a maya palm gaussia, dissmissed as some type of Chamaedorea so i put it aside in a bucket for another day. after spraying for mealybugs n scales i set this pot aside. with 2 plants, u marked pot ( = seeds i didnt not sow otherwise theyd have been labelled and put in safe place). i recognize the seeds as similar to kentia, but the palm was growing out from the seed, now i pulled it apart gently. its not in any way a kentia, its in many ways a chamad-gaussia or some other species. but why is it gr…

Planting day...
by palmfriend- 6 replies

Hi, after purchasing and separating a H. forsteriana (they were actually four) last September... ...they went into the ground today. I have to admit that I had one loss - you can see the already staked one, right center (photo was taken after the separating) because its stem was already at that time completely molded what I found out a week later. However the other three pulled through and since we are expecting the rain season to start soon, it would be a good moment to get into action. Because I like the jungle look they went into spot covered by other plants. I think it would look "cool" when these three get tall and…

I have this Butia that this person is letting me come and dig up and take away but what's the process in digging out a palm and transporting it? The only thing I know is to keep the rootball as big as humanly possible within my strengths, we have a trailer we can get it on but what do you do with the root ball? What do you cover it with and should I tie the fronds up and cover them as well? I think I have a tarp but I have zero Idea what's the best way too ensure the safety of the palm, so tips would be apperciate! 🥰

Queen Palm Yellowing

I've had the following Queen Palm in a pot for 3 years or so and it's starting to look pretty yellow. Do you think this is normal? The new growth does come in green and I feed it 3 times per year. Could it be drainage issue? I can't plant it in the ground, that's not an option here. Might need more drainage.
