Two ID Requests

Hello all. Longtime lurker, first time poster here. I'm curious if the group can point in the right direction for an ID for two palms. The first is from my neighborhood here in Los Angeles. A very attractive, slender, colorful palm. Seems to grow in clumps. The second, I saw on a trip to Mexico City. It looks almost like a Washingtonia but I have a feeling it is not... Thanks for your advice.

I noticed the other day that my Hyphaene compressa has decided to branch. As with the other hyphaenes, they all branched at the ground level - none have branched above ground. I cut off all of the ground level branches so it grew faster. It is now over 20' tall and has decided now to branch - a first for my hyphaenes! I've included a photo of it. BTW, it has not flowered as yet - so no idea whether male or female. Right in the center of the photo you will notice 2 petioles next to each other. I'll try to post another photo next year when it is more noticeable. rod phoenix

Coconut palm does well after 33 degrees and 25 mph winds!!! (record cold)

My coconut palm surrounded by 3 walls did fine in the extreme cold in Jax Florida. It’s bright red so possibly a variety like red spicata is more cold tolerant. After this wheather event it only had some yellow spots and very mild burns at the tips. Maybe I got a cold hardy variety, it was off Facebook marketplace. I still had to cover the trunk.

Which one of these 3 palms?
by Solino- 36 replies

Hi, Been reading the forum for a long time but never posted before. I live in Clearwater FL. I have a spot in my backyard I would like to put one of these 3 large palms. The spot is on a slope and it's very unlikely to ever get standing water (the bottom of the slope is around 5 feet from the top, and that does get occasional standing water after heavy rain, however the palm would be placed near the top). The 3 palms I am thinking about are: Hyphaene thebaica Hyphaene compressa Borassus aethiopum I know these 3 are all palms that tend to like drier climates but I am thinking they should all be able to adapt to Clearwater in a place…

Hello Our potted and very slow-growing red palm from Costa Rica, continues to thrive, or so we think. We planted it 7 years ago. I recently bought 8-4-8 palm fertilizer by Vigoro, and I ask if it would help or hurt this delicate palm. Thank you

The great Palm weevil temp experiment
by Stevetoad- 18 replies

In an effort to see how much cold these spawns of satan can handle I devised a very scientific experiment to preform in them. I caught 3 South American palm weevils put them each in a tube and placed one in my freezer at 0f, one in my refrigerator at 35f and one in a cooler with ice and salt and was able to hold the temperature between 26-28f. Here are the results… freezer at 0f for 1 hour (dead) refrigerator at 35f for 12 hours (alive) 40 hours (alive) salt / ice at 26-28f for 12 hours (alive) 40 hours (still alive) not a great outcome being that those temps would do a bunch of damage on its own.

Leaf spear and bugs - Ravenea glauca

Hello, i have a young Ravenea glauca and noticed one of the newer fronds suddenly die during our rainstorm. Came out today to check and the leaf spear and any emerging fronds completely fell out. The inner most fronds has these maggot type worms. salvageable? Should I pour hydrogen peroxide? I am in Orange County, CA. This palm really took off this last year and was one of my first ones planted - super bummed!

Question, when wrapping palm with miniature Christmas lights, after bundling all the fronds up, do I wrap the entire tree from the bottom of the trunk to the very top of the bundled fronds with lights, or do I just wrap from the bottom of the trunk up to the bottom of the spear starts with lights? I also plan on wrapping the entire tree in frost cloth over the lights. Just wondering what protects the fronds if I don't wrap the bundle of fronds with lights as well. Will be wrapping one royal palm and one foxtail palm (both about 15 feet). In Orlando area and temps may dip to the high 20s this weekend. Thanks.

Coccothrinax argentata nor not?
by Tracy- 2 followers

While Coccothrinax argentata is probably one of the more commonly planted of its genus here in California, they still aren't common enough for most Californians to immediately identify them in a line up. So, I will blame my ignorance on that. I purchased the palm in question as a 1 gallon Coccothrinax argentata and it seems to be a good consistent grower in my garden. Reading other posts that say these are a slow grow, I thought it worthwhile to post and ask those more knowledgeable about the genus if this matches up best as C argentata or some other species. So with that introduction, some photos: Trunk, abaxial leaf view, looking down on plant, adaxial leaf with ha…

Garden Gifts

While catching up on farm maintenance after an amazing IPS adventure in Peru, I spied two garden gifts. My only Licuala sallehana v. sallehana has two flower spines. It bloomed once before without making seed but maybe this will be the year? I would like a group of these! Nearby I see that my Geonoma pauciflora is also trying to reproduce. Any gifts of surprise flowers/fruits from your palms recently?

Sabal Palmetto in California`
by el-blanco- 37 replies

I know Sabal Palmetto palms are as common as St. Augustine grass on the Gulf Coast. I am wondering why we never see them out here in Southern California? I have a 5 gallon S. Palmetto I pulled up out of my grandfathers yard in Hommassassa Springs (TAMPA AREA) that I should have put in the ground many years ago. VERY ROOT BOUND. Always does fine and looks green as can be. I like this tree and it reminds me of spending all my summers in Crystal River, Hommassassa, Weekii Watchee areas. Anyone growing this in California? THanks, Jeff

Florida Lethal Bronzing Status in 2022.
by BlueMarlin226- 21 replies

Anyone with knowledge about the subject able to provide a current status update and outlook for this terrible disease? Most of the articles I find are from 2019/2020, and don’t provide much useful info. I used to live in Lakeland and didn’t notice it until 2020, and in the past two years it seems to have gotten so much worse in the I-4 corridor. Apparently it’s been in the state since 2006, so why has it seemingly spread so much in the past few years? Is it likely to get much worse, or is there any reason to be optimistic? Thankfully it doesn’t seem to be too bad on the East Coast at this time, having lived in and near Jacksonville for the past year and traveling around a…

Differentiating between Phoenix sylvestris and Phoenix dactylifera
by Farid Belbachir- 11 replies

Dear all. Hope this finds you well. I am puzzled about the morphological differentiation between Phoenix sylvestris and Phoenix dactylifera. Here in Algeria, I am used with the latter species, but not at all with P. sylvestris. In the literature, the morphological caracteristics used to distinguish between the two species are not sharp. I do not know if a similar request has already been adressed in this forum. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Caryota (forgot species)

I planted this Caryota inside my greenhouse years ago. I forget what species it is. Its gotten pretty large over the years. I was up on my ladder taking a photo of my Arachnis orchid and took a photo of one of the fronds from above. Is it possible to ID the species from the frond?
