What are their differences? I think I heard of their fruits being different shapes but is there any other visual differences between the two varieties? Thanks

I wanted to share something important with fellow palm enthusiasts who have been following the ongoing issue of lethal bronzing. I’ve recently published new research that looks deeper into how lethal bronzing may actually lead to palm death. Instead of viewing the disease as simply “blocking” the palm’s vascular system, this paper explores the possibility that the palm’s own internal defense response may become over-activated — and that this extreme reaction may be what ultimately causes the collapse of the apical meristem. This is not presented as a cure, but as a step forward in understanding the mechanics of the disease. My hope is that clearer insight into w…

I grew a batch of seeds (from China) of his relatively cold hardy species. They grew well in pots in deep shade of the forest. I ´d like to plant out some of the bigger seedlings. What do they prefer? Half shady conditions, bright shade or full shade? Can they handle full sun? Show me please your palms!

I have two seedlings and I can't figure their growing needs in winter time and I must say they are tricky for me even in summer time. When first temperature drops they got these fungus marks and slowly start to decline. I'm not sure if they need overhead protection due high dew .....? Daily temperatures are usually between 13 and 17C, night drops about to 5-10C. Would moving them inside help? I'm afraid of spider mites infection

Hey SoCal -Get ready!

It sure feels good , it looks like Mother Nature is going to soak our gardens . It has been quite the dry spell here since the deluge in November. I have been holding off on watering the last few days because the weather calls for a lot of rain to fall in our area. The last rain event delivered about 10” of rain over 3-4 days . The palms and flowers looked so happy. Then it turned dry and warm with high pressure dominating our weather. THAT is about to change. In my area it should start late afternoon . Los Angeles and south to San Diego will see rain by evening 🤞. Our Northern California neighbors have had flooding inland , unfortunately , and the burn areas down here ma…

Some have claimed the Newport Beach Coconut might be the farthest north in the ground with sustained growth, at around 33 degrees, 37 minutes latitude. Please submit any other farthest from equator claims - be sure to include exact latitude position, north or south.

The wonders of enough water..
by quaman58- 1 reply

Hey all, i’ve had this plant in the ground for a number of years. Located in pretty close proximity to a large Beccariophoenix and amid numerous other plants all vying for water. Up until a year or so ago I had a number of zones irrigated primarily through above ground spray. It certainly always seemed like they should’ve been getting enough water, as most of the other plants in the area had reasonably decent growth rates. But this one just languished. As I’ve posted before, I had drip irrigation put in about a year ago with a fertilizer injector, which has been remarkable. But I was walking by this plant yesterday and noticed the difference in the growth ring spac…

Phoenix reclinata x theophrasti
by ahosey01- 8 replies

Courtesy of @Fusca, who is becoming a good friend of mine since touching down in Texas, I received this Phoenix reclinata x theophrasti seedling. As I understand it, pollen came from @Laaz and seeds came from @Josue Diaz. Jon knows how much I love Phoenix and so was kind enough to gift it to me. I'm particularly excited about this cross for the following reasons: It is somewhat unusual and, with theophrasti, should be absolutely indestructible in our area. My idea of Saturday fun is risking a trip to the ER to trim 300 suckers off a palm that appeared since the Saturday prior. Will post updates over time:

A while back one of you knowledgeable persons ID’d this unusual Chamaedorea and stupid me can’t remember what it is. It’s solitary, fruits are tiny and brownish black when ripe, nodes on trunk are bulged and irregular, and leaflets are droopy and a bit irregular. The palm is roughly fifteen years old.

By now, I've given away lots of the seeds, and I've learned the mostly good fates of many. So, good, bad, told before, or not, share your Chamadorea radicalis seed sprouting experiences, even if you didn't get them from me. I have a lot by the way. If you've had bad luck, maybe we can help change it. Palmy love to all!

Might as well get a couple more in the ground, with some good irrigation they will be fine in the house garden. With a little soil amended and a good watering from the grey water septic system they will certainly get a lot moisture and nutrients, Thanks to a bio cycle system, a great way to water palms.

I found this small botanical garden and was surprised to find quite a few unique palms there . I still appreciate when i find something where i have no idea what species. My first thought on this on was something in the Bactris genus, but then my mind went to Pigafetta. Only 2 species in that genus . Is it Pigfetta filaris? There are minimal tags there

Moving a small Canary Palm
by GMann- 8 replies
I may need to move this Canary Palm about 3 or 4 feet closer to the street to put in a circular driveway. How big of a hole do you think I will need to dig? How big and wide? Will it survive the move? The palm has a little under 2 foot of trunk and it may not be a pure Canary, maybe it’s a hybrid so a little smaller? It just produced some tiny fruit for the first time.

It is not frequent, compared to Sabal Palmetto or Minor. It has a thin trunk and withstands low temperatures. I think I'm going to buy 2. Does anyone know tell me the speed of growth with respect to other sabal? https://www.coldpalm.nl/en/sabal-rosei.html

It had sped up a bit only after I had buried next to it a mastiff dog🙄! If it were a Caribbean sp, I'd say it needed some dose of voodoo magic, but it is actualy from the West Coast. I like the bright reddish fiber around leaf bases.
