On the occasion of the first pinnate leaf of my N°1401 I open a new thread for this only little known species Lytocaryum insigne TOLEDO 1944 (now again Syagrus insignis BECC. 1916, former Cocos insignis MART. 1854 and Glaziova insignis DRUDE 1881) Please post your pics of L insigne here, too! It doesn’t matter if they are in pots, in gardens, or (best of all) in habitat. I begin with my oldest baby N°1401, born 2014-02-14 during the cold winter in Germany, grown up together with nine other siblings, out of which six emigrated into other European countries, so that at my place now are remaining still four plants: N°1401, 1402, 1404, and 1408. Here comes the bigg…

Rust fungus or bug
by D. Morrowii- 3 replies

A couple weeks ago I noticed some slightly sickly looking leaves on a couple of palms in the front yard. I tried spraying with a castille soap, alcohol and dawn mixture that I use for mealy bugs and scale but it didn't seem to have much of an effect. I bought some Daconil recently to treat some crown rot on a Veitchia and noticed it treats “rust funguses” The orange stuff seems to mostly be attracted to a couple coconuts and seems to be causing some premature leaf death. I read a little on IFLAS website about it and it seems like it might be hard to knock down. Is this something serious or just treat with fungicide kind of thing? Thanks Dean

With the drought setting in certain areas of Australia gardens are starting to suffer i mass planted in the recent record breaking rains Australia had now iam constantly trying to water all those plants to get them established and the drought is not doing me any favours at all you either walk away and let your plants die or water them in hope you keep them alive long enough for some rain I have a bore for water but that comes at a cost to the environment and electricity if it keeps up much longer iam going to get on the roof and do a rain dance in some hope of decent rainfall iam sure a lot of gardens are starting to suffer not to mention the physiological affects a droug…

Today wandering the garden as I often do while taking a break from work I noticed that my Beccariophoenix madagascariensis seems to be starting to put on a little size. I can’t remember exactly when I planted it. It’s been about 6 years I would guess. It was a small 5 gallon. Over those years it has consistently put out new leafs, but it never really seemed to get too much bigger. While still considered small, it seems to finally be putting on some size. 5 gallon bucket in 2nd pic for scale. So what palm in your garden caught your eye today? It doesn’t have to be your favorite, just something that stuck out to you today.

One Year after Hurricane Ian in Cape Coral, FL
by PalmatierMeg- 3 followers

Yesterday was the 1-year anniversary of monster Hurricane Ian hitting SWFL. The South eyewall passed over our house after coming ashore over Caya Costa with wind gusts of 178 mph. Our house suffered almost no damage except to lanai screens (thank you, Sabal Row). But our 5-lot landscaping suffered massive damage the following photos only hint at. I thought Hurricane Irma (2017 - beware the "I" storms) wreaked destruction but Ian was mind-boggling. Yesterday I read an article about expected timeframes different local communities faced to fully recover. Estimates ranged from 2 to over 10 years. Fort Myers Beach has hardly started rebuilding but says it will be back in 5 y…

Royal palm locations in California

Hello all, Through my travels and research/reading through Palmtalk threads, I have created a Google My Maps of all of the royal palms I know of in California. I know there are lots that I'm missing, I know there are royals in the Inland Empire (Riverside, etc.) and Low Desert (Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio), and plenty of others in LA, OC, and SD. Please let me know of any other CA royals to add to the map. Thanks, enjoy! https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1FSlnGtLXPdk2x783aR92jki_cjqTH9c&ll=35.38601949243062%2C-119.92030945420171&z=6 Here are some videos I've taken of California royal palms on my YouTube channel Palm P…

This is my personal experiment of germinating and growing Cocos nucifera in Malta and succeeding in most of them surviving in winter by positioning them in South facing sunny area

I was wondering who's growing one of these? Where'd you get them? How do they do in your climate? Under what sort of conditions do they thrive? In what kind of soil, how much water? I have 2 campestris, one I've grown from a strap leaf from Jungle Music, I got it well over a decade ago. It was happy until recently, now I'm having issues with chlorosis. I potted it up and I'm fertilizing with iron, hoping for the best. My other campestris looks great, as does my one schizophylla. I ordered a bunch of campestris seeds on ebay and I've been lucky enough to get a few to germinate.

ID a Pritchie for me?

This Pritchardia was sold to me as a P minor, but I’m open to thoughts. It’s been in the ground for about ten years; I think it might like more water than it has been getting. Leaf underside.

I would like this to be a thread where Palmtalkers post cold sensitive zone 10 palms you come across in the Orlando area. The ever-increasing effects of the urban heat island are more evident each year. The first is an updated photo of the Cocos nucifera growing at Smashburger near downtown.

First flower on mystery Dypsis / Chrysalidocarpus

One of my favorite palms is flowering for the first time. It’s most likely a hybrid so the seed might not be viable but I’ll still try to sprout some. that last picture shows Chrysalidocarpus sp. Lafazamanga on the right which is always flowering and seeding. Maybe it can somehow cross with the mystery hybrid?

They say look at someone’s book collection and you can get a pretty good idea about that person obviously iam a palm nut in the days before the internet (I only started to google about 10 years ago) there was a thing called books information was a bit limited so you had to do research with a book then you had to find the books with the content you wanted I still use my books it’s nice to read them and it’s better than having a pixel addiction with a flat screen also you can learn a lot from books it’s a different feeling holding a book instead of looking at a screen 📺

Northern CA Royal Palm Update

For those of you who have been following the existence of this royal palm here in my northern latitude, here's a picture taken today, December 10, 2011. This summer's cool temperatures allowed only two new leaves and a third is trying to make it out but will have to wait until spring arrives. Now in its sixth year in the ground from a tiny two leaf seedling, it's making some progress as you can see some exposed trunk. Hopefully next summer will have more normal highs so this baby can add a few more fronds.

Weepy dypsis onilahensis let’s seem em

From the time I first got into palms dypsis onilahensis weepy form has always been one of my favorites. I remember it taking me a while to find one but after buying a few that ended up being the upright form I finally got one. Not a rocket ship by any stretch especially compared to the upright form. I’ve had this one for about 8 years from a one gallon. Always a solid plant. Never been fed hasn’t cared if it was in full sun or shaded. 118f no problem, 26f no damage. Show em if you got em.

Palm identification help
by Foxpalms- 2 replies

I need help identifying these seedlings. All were grown from seed. The seeds were collected in mostly zone 12b areas and a couple came from zone 13a where every type of palm grows due to the fact the humidity and temperature seems to be fine for all palms. All were germinated around 3 months ago and have been growing outside fine here with some sunburn. I'm guessing the bottom one is some sort of archontophoenix? Which if it is could be any except purpurea. I'm not sure about the top one. I'm guessing these are bottle palms.

I have a howea fosteriana that I bought a couple of months ago, and it's way too big for the pot where is it right now. Is it okay to plant it in November or December? Temps are normally around 18º at day and 10º minimum temp. I mean, I saw the forecast of lord Howe island and they get similar temps.

Hello everyone! I look forward to following up on the growth of this hybrid palm. I have no experience with this hybrid, although I have others like butiaXsyagrus or butiaXjubaea. It has been bought for 110€ from a local grower, I don't know if he is a forum member. JULY 2023 Pre-purchase photos: JULY 2023 First transplant. I am located in Spain, near Madrid. Zone 8b. I hope to keep it outdoors in semi-shade for as long as possible. I accept advice! I will update with changes. I hope I am lucky and it grows healthy and stro…
