What is the secret to growing Neoveitchia storckii?
by Palmaceae- 1 follower

I planted a small Neoveitchia storckii back in May of 2014, never did that well. It would put out new fronds but very slowly. I put it in the most protected part of my yard but did not receive that much shade as I really did not have any at that time (that was the first problem, too much sun). Since then things have grown and it did get partially shaded during the day. This year we never went below 40 but it is quickly declining. So the question is, what is the secret of growing this palm? Below is a picture of it a month ago, looks a lot worse now. It is the small palm in front of the small coconut.

Building the new greenhouse so why not start a bit of landscaping. A couple of rouge macrospermum in the greenhouse and a kentia should do for a start around the new greenhouse. It seemed to have worked planting a few palms around the old greenhouse. At least I will see them grow up and be part of a feature in the future.

Rhapis subtilis flowering after 24 years
by happypalms- 6 replies

An original rhapis germinated from seed some 24 years past. It has finally become an adult palm after all those years. Most likely the big rain event we just for 3 months triggered the response. I doubt I will get any seeds it’s rare for rhapis to set seed in my climate, they will set seed but very rarely, I will be hopeful gor a couple of seeds if iam lucky. But still it’s nice to see it flowering after such a long time.

Is it true that the smaller the palm, the less additional waterings it needs to get established? Therefore would it be true that tiny seedlings barely need any additional waterings to survive?

Some new palms purchased prior to last winter in summer., so round two for these beauties facing another winter. Pinanga declinata, Areca rhephyptica and areca vidaliana. All the tropical growth has suffered in aclimitisation, with them being solely tropical sp. Some zone push winers in the collection now. It was worth the try.

Today wandering the garden as I often do while taking a break from work I noticed that my Beccariophoenix madagascariensis seems to be starting to put on a little size. I can’t remember exactly when I planted it. It’s been about 6 years I would guess. It was a small 5 gallon. Over those years it has consistently put out new leafs, but it never really seemed to get too much bigger. While still considered small, it seems to finally be putting on some size. 5 gallon bucket in 2nd pic for scale. So what palm in your garden caught your eye today? It doesn’t have to be your favorite, just something that stuck out to you today.

Planting a few palms red Areca joey dasyantha

Some proven winter winners. I might as well get em in the ground, at least with the cool weather, they won’t need a lot of water, resting up tucking themselves in for winter and then they should be right to go by late winter early spring making it a bit easier on the watering.

What are your favorite edible palms? I’m looking for something less common I already have several varieties or açaí and snake fruit but I’m looking for something different I have açaí, snake fruit, jelly palm, bactris ferruginiea (probably misspelled it) bactris major and bactris gasipies/ peach palm (also probably misspelled) I would like if it was rare but not so rare that it would be impossible to find besides going to its native area. Thank you

Dypsis plumosa flowering aka fakey ambositrae
by happypalms- 5 replies

The good old plumosa. Originally sold in Australia as ambositrae which it is clearly not. One tough palm heat tolerant and cool tolerant surviving pretty hard conditions. I know that because these ones have seen some dry times and temperatures down to 2 degrees Celsius. The only problem I see with them is the lower leaves tend to break while still green and in good condition, perhaps it’s wind but all three mature specimens I have do the same. But a great landscaping palm with a relatively small trunk fitting into a lot of places between paths and buildings, which we all do for some reason plant near concrete paths a buildings. Still a beautiful palm worth growing and see…

Hey guys, I planted my Sylvester tree in March, it’s starting to turn a little yellow. I have watered it religiously all the time. I don’t think that’s the issue. Is it time for fertilizer? And how much and what is recommended?

A nice little winter seedling order. They will be fine in the hothouse. I wanted a few more dypsis cabadae for the garden. And ten gronophylum pinangoides 100 ptychosperma waitianum such a nice coloured new red leaf. And while I was at a few pachypodium to gro on the side in the hothouse, they always seem to be a popular plant at the markets. I like to grow a bit of diversity in my plants, plus I will plant them around my garden in the dry hot spots. Some nice healthy seedlings to raise on the farm so to speak.

I have a 15 gal Bizzy wanting to put in ground. Where I want to plant the palm is right by the water line. I did a walk around the neighborhood to see if there are any other trees around other water lines on other houses & there are, some very near, others farther. My husband is worried about the palm's roots causing damage to the line. Is he worried for nothing ? From what I read, palms roots are more shallow. Thoughts ?

I have been observing my plant for about 2-3 weeks. I have noticed that the new leaves are quite bright in color, different from the other plants I have grown from seed. I suspect that it may be a variegated plant. Please advise.

The tree was identified as a Phoenix reclinata, or at least close to one, in a prior thread so that's what I am going with. It's been here forever it seems. Right now its a big mess out there as I trim a bit more each day. 97 degrees and 100% humidity really takes it's toll on you. That whole circled area is what I am trying to get under control. Everything that grows below the main trunks. I know they eventually turn into new trunks but that could take decades, right? So about the pups (if I am using the right lingo), over the years we have been here they keep spreading out, which I guess is a good thing because the tree is healthy and …

(This Is My First Post Ever) I used to have 100+ screenshots of different coconut palms (over 110) growing in Monterrey, Mexico. Sadly I lost all of them. Most of those palms are probably dead by now anyways because of the February 2021 freeze. these are some that I could remember. Bonus Attalea Sp screenshot at the end. (Also in Monterrey) Killed by the freeze Killed by the freeze (2) The state of this one is unknown, most likely alive. This one is alive and it never gets cold damage, last year it snowed and it was like nothing happened. Unknown state (2) Unknown state (3) Un…

Jax, Fl Royal Palm Update
by RoystoneaJax- 24 replies

I thought I’d give you all an update on the big royal palms in Jax along the St. John’s river. We had a pretty mild winter in Jax overall but there was one very cold spell that lasted for about a week. In that week we had 4 nights in a row that hit the 20s and two of those nights it got down to 24. As you can see the royal palms got hit hard but I think they all survived as there still looks to be some green on them. I have, or had, a small royal in my yard that was completely defoliated but so far hasn’t had spear pull and I think might just barely be holding on as the spear seems to still be growing. Each one of the Christmas palms I had in my yard, (I had three) were c…
