Did any of your coconuts or any other zone 10a palms survive?

…..almost yearly problem in my garden when things fill in. I feel like I’ve removed what others would consider grail plants just to thin the heard. Tough decisions. I think the hard work is done for that plant. It looks happy now and appears like it will gain momentum in the coming years. -dale

As you know, cycads leaflets and leaves can change as they mature. Hopefully the smaller of the two develops a little more character like the one in full sun over time. Patience is the mark of a cycad grower. N'est pas? Nicht wahr?

Dale, I planted that as a 2 leafer in 2018, so that represents 8 years in the ground by the end of summer. Not a speedy cycad, but I also could have given it more sun. Unfortunately my planting area for cycads was pretty limited by that point. I did manage to squeeze it in and perhaps will have to remove another nearby cycad to give it room someday. There are worse problems than trying to triage which of one's cycads will stay and which will go.

1.5 inches in june and watering restrictions are still in place. Premature yellowing, tip burn are evident in all moisture lovers. I am hiding my containers in shade, all of them. I am glad that I planted 65 palms(on 0.3 AC) including a number of clusters and multiples. Seems like the more exposed they are, the more burn they have. I still don't have the full canopy back after Milton and that means many palms are more exposed than they would be. Even one watering a week by irrigation makes a difference. If I didnt have auto irrigation even just once a week, a bunch of stuff would be dead now. One more time I am glad I didnt get a bigger yard, it forced me to plant things closer together and that has them protecting each other from the heating and drying sun. I'm sure the cactii here are loving it.

I got some seeds sold as Encephalartos turneri about 12 years ago. One is flushing right now that is planted in deep shade. It’s still fairly small and has only been in the ground for about a year. These two photos were taken about a week apart. I have another one that’s bigger, it’s in full sun and has a more interesting leaf form. It’s not flushing at the moment but here are two photos of the plant. I’ll also upload photos next time it flushes, which should be soon.

There are several. Probably the oldest one is in front of Flagler Tavern. I saw it about a month ago, and it was in better shape than the South Daytona photo I shared. There is also a Veitchia sp planted next to it that had a fair amount of green

Here, it’s rained three times in June this month. About 1/3rd of an inch each time. We’re about 6 inches short of normal for June so far. Hot, clear sunny skies. Irrigation keeping things alive, but not overjoyed. 90s during the day and 80s at night. Some of the fancier potted palms yellowing from the invariable 24 hour heat and humidity. We are in need of some tropical storms.

Min of 18.3c/65f slightly cooler than the night before with the easterly breeze coming in off the north sea with a high of 30.5c/87f with 17.5c dewpoint so a bit sticky. MUCH hotter tomorrow with potentially two days of 40c on Wednesday and Thursday. Clouded over here with potential for some light rain later this evening. I can hear thunderstorms in the far distance. Western England/southern wales has potential for tornados tonight. A moderate risk in place.

Progress with the little wooly cycad. Yes, this is my favorite right now as it flushes and often when it isn't.

I don't recall the species of this bromeliad but it isn't growing in my yard so don't feel compelled to know. It is attractive. I recall these being planted at least a dozen years ago, as I often pass this home while walking my dogs.

That looks like about two years growth down here by the coast.

Many years ago I got seeds of this hardy north anerican palm and it thrives well in my subtropical climate with cold winters and humidity year round and with fresh/warm summers because of the aktitude : 1030 m (= 3379 feet)

Removing stalk might help. Make sure to fertilize when temps are in 80's

After two days of 35C / 95F and the hottest day and night in May on record, yet another record breaking heatwave is on the way this June. But first to document the May episode in here… Now onto the current heatwave. Some proper disgusting model output. ARPEGE has Wednesday as the hottest day with 41-42C / 106-108F temperatures. UKV has the highest temperatures on Thursday but is also showing 41-42C / 106-108F. No surprise to see Red warnings issued by Met Office for extreme heat with 40C expected. Probably the most shocking chart yet is the 30C / 86F nighttime minimum on ARPEGE in Somerset for Wednesday night. That is just insanity. Watch this space…

Beauties, one of my favorite palms. I tried one years ago in an exposed location which did not survive. However I’ve had two under canopy since then that are doing just fine. Veitchias in general just scream “tropics”.

It looks like temperature shock, growing in a warm spot, perhaps acclimating to its new home. Let it dry out and keep it in a warm position. Trim of the dying leaves. And as for a rain plan as long as it has good drainage I can’t see why you cannot just place it outside and treat it like any other container palm. Dont fuss over it they are as tough as nails.
