Who wants an Arenga engleri hedge
sonoranfans replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEAnother factor to be aware of with Arenga Engleri is the fruit mesocarp has a high oxalic acid content. Always wear gloves when handling fruits or trimming as oxalic acid is a severe skin and eye irritant. It can give some painful contact burns. Most obviously do not swallow fruit. So when they are fruiting, handle with care, eye protection and gloves. I would not want to dispose of the fruit from dozens of palms and it goes without saying keep the kids away from them when fruiting.

TX cases = 29, as of today, though today's addition ( Pecos County ) is listed as inactive. Overall, cases continue to stack up. S.I. Rearing / Dispersal facility in Chiapas has officially opened. Once running full throttle, it will be able to produce 100 Mil. sterilized flies per week, adding to the 100 /100+ million flies already being produced at the COPEG facility in Panama. -

Areca catechu sunscald
SoulofthePlace replied to SoulofthePlace's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI doubt it's just wind. As soon as it sheds a frond the exposed bright green trunk quickly browns from sunburn just like it did now during summer without any winds. Interesting that in the above photo in Florida it does not become sunburnt. -
Satakentia liukiuensis seed
SoulofthePlace replied to atlantisrising's topic in For SaleThe SL seeds were kept and germinated inside of a large garage with large ceiling windows. The seedlings germinated many, but over time they all declined. -
Germinating Brahea Armata seeds.
amh replied to BayAndroid's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI'm resurrecting this thread because I too have noticed that brahea seeds germinate best after a cold period. The fresh seeds may germinate without cold, but I have found that older seeds need to be left out over winter. - Today

Perhaps a well-aired consideration..
tim_brissy_13 replied to CPS1's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThey are pretty tough, I think it will be fine. In retrospect, I think the only thing you did that I wouldn’t recommend is the blood and bone fertiliser but as long as it wasn’t excessive, it shouldn’t cause permanent damage. I’d keep it on the more well watered side of things at least for the rest of your growing season and then back off a bit as it cools down. -
Why not grow orchids?
Tracy replied to Matt in SD's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsThis small terrestrial orchid grows at low elevation above the Arctic Circle in Norway's Lofoten islands. I don't know how much further north or inland that it grows, nor do I know it's name. For me, it was an unexpected find during a hike. Why not native orchids in Norway though? -
Burretiokentia Species
PlantMorePalms replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI'm growing B. vieillardii and B. hapala which both do great in our cool climate. They're much happier since they got some canopy from a nearby Telanthophora grandifolia and are now outpacing my Chambeyronias which are constantly suffering from sunburn. Hard to get a good pic but here's my B. vieillardii. Side note, T. grandifolia is a nice fast-growing canopy option, mine's almost 20 feet tall from a seedling in a bit over 2 years.

A place for my seedlings ! My new greenhouse
realarch replied to Harry’s Palms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEGood on you Harry. Nice and compact, looks to be of good quality as well. I’m sure there will be a learning curve throughout the year, but as much time as you’ll be tending to it, you’ll figure it out fast. Tim -
Perhaps a well-aired consideration..
CPS1 posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHi I live in South UK and I got an 8' tall, very healthy CIDP (I think), for free. It had been brought up in a partial-shade garden. The roots had been contained by virtue of it having been originally planted between breeze blocks, so they came out intact. It was transplanted within 24 hours, the owner keeping the roots damp with a wet towel overnight. I dug the hole (without any informed advice, totally exposed to the wind and sun) and planted (in clay soil) with loads of (peat-based) quality compost. Also did another apparent no-no, gave it some blood, fish and bone fertiliser. Watered well. A couple of days later it poured down, so ground around quite saturated. 4 weeks on, I think it has survived the transplant, but a lot of the outside leaves have turned brown. I chopped some of the fronds, then read they're best left until horizontal. But my dilemma was, given the soil..is this transplant shock, over-watered or still under-watered? The crown seems healthy and secure. I took a soil sample 6-8" down, and it was the perfect 'moist'. But, part due to my my 'gut feeling ' and part my impatience/not enjoying a sickly-looking plant, I've now drip fed it, outside of the dug hole/it's original root boundary, thinking well if it wants it, it'll 'reach out', otherwise, it shouldn't cause direct waterlogging. Was just my theory 😄 On a sunny, dry evening..over time, it probably got several gallons. Now I've crossed my fingers.. So having come across a site with experts, (although somewhat 'after the horse has bolted'), thought I'd ask, did I do good or bad? Might it survive my possible abuse? Last pic is the crown bit. What might I do next, if anything? Will it survive the upto 50 pmh winter winds? Cheers Sent from Outlook for Android

New Smyrna Beach coconut and other exotics
Bazza replied to Golden10's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHi everyone...... I've posted Coconut pics here before - in particular the oceanfront property down by Van Kleeck owned by the Golden Corral founder/owner. Since the Feb. 1 freeze, I had ridden by several times and his Coconuts, while severely damaged like many of ours, appeared to have mostly survived and were beginning to recover. Then yesterday I see this., Every one removed including some other species. And it looks like the property may be on the market. Uploading Attachment... -

I can import live snails but have trouble importing living palm seeds
Harry’s Palms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI understand your frustration . I think , for now , my desire to import seeds or plants has diminished as fees everywhere rise . Here , costs are going up disproportionately to affordability. I understand the idea of biosafety and all , but the cost is driving some into smuggling mode. I have an idea of what it takes to germinate palm seeds and it is a lot of time and a bit of work. I get my seeds for free but still spend on soil and containers . I admire your dedication to the palms , I can only imagine the amount of effort and $$ required. Harry

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"
flplantguy replied to SubTropicRay's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEPreliminary dats for june shows most of the state below for the month with the weat coast in the top driest junes on record. A hotter atmosphere holds more moisture but also takes more forcing to generate rainfall. The result is drier on the daily chances with rain "bombs" when it does rain and large amounts. Florida is used to this pattern but it has gotten amplified recently and we are seeing that play out. Im hoping the pattern shifts for the rest of the summer and fall. -

A place for my seedlings ! My new greenhouse
Harry’s Palms replied to Harry’s Palms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEMy plan is to get a solar fan but I really should have a power source for a bit of warmth in the winter . Yesterday I opened the door and , with the vent partially opened , had very good air flow . It is almost always windy up here by the afternoon hours. The problem then becomes maintaining humidity . With the door open , the humidity drops to 45% instead of 80% . Harry
