It is great that it is growing well for you , but honestly it will be many years to maturity . To me , that’s what I like about them. Harry

32 at my house in Altamonte Springs, 35 at Leu Gardens. If you followed local "news" you would have thought FL was having another Dec. 1989 freeze with the ridiculous feels like temp ratings hype.

Than started following Root barriers

Not exactly about palms but I wasn't sure in which forum to post. I am wondering if anyone has tried root barriers around trees, and whether they are worth it. What is your experience with trying to contain aggressive roots? To give some context, I want to plant my Eucalyptus deglupta in the ground, provided it makes it through the winter. It's been doing fine so far, despite totally unprotected and in a pot, and has survived 28F with minor damage. Now, the only spot available in the garden is about 20 feet from a retention wall downhill. My property is on a slope and the wall retains it. The wall is about 12 ft tall and quite sturdy. I don't want the roots of the tree to damage that very precious wall, even if that happens in years from now. I read that this species' root system can get very big and can damage walls and foundations even if sturdy and far.

Welcome to PalmTalk! I've been super impressed by my original 5 Alfies, taking minimal damage down to ~25F with frost. They get some leaf burn and some yellow Magnesium-tipping deficiencies after cold snaps, but generally sail right through upper 20s with ease. My yard hit a low of 27.5F with not-quite-snowlike frost, but pretty close! That's a lot colder than the local airport, once again! I think the delta between my house and the airport really is tied to windspeed. This time they recorded 31F for a 1 hour dip about 7AM, but I was below 30 for at least 3 or 4 hours this morning. As in previous windless cold fronts, my front yard is around 2F warmer than the back yard. I'm glad I put a box over the Arenga Westerhoutii and Corypha Lecomtei "big seedlings." I will probably do the same on Sunday night.

Thanks! Everything really did!

Yeah, I agree its way too close. We haven't had any freezing temps at all this year (Houston TX). I'll try to get more pics, the fronds are all horizontal. It's never looked like that before and I don't think any other healthy Butias look like that either.

Awesome photos everything did so well for you in 2025

It looks a lot bigger in person!
-
Same, I love the look of them. They remind me of a lady palm. this is the biggest one i've seen only 1 hour and a half away from me at the national arboretum in dc

This is a good reason for you to write Palm Mod for help. Sorry I can’t directly help.

Actually I think we do get enough heat and humidity in our climate it has been pretty fast growing for me I have noticed it is put on a lot of growth this year and the trunk has really gotten bigger

I do love that deep green of needle palms. First nice one I have ever seen was in the Columbia, SC area. Must have been at least 5 feet tall! I tried to grow one from a 1 gallon size that (stunningly) they sold at Walmart, when I lived in Albuquerque and it couldn’t survive the summer. I probably didn’t water it enough either. Plus the ground was infested with ants. 🐜

It will be many years , they are slow growers , especially in that climate zone. The good news is they can survive very cold winters! Harry

Phoenix Roebelini love water and good drainage . As long as the pot is draining well and it gets protected during winter , it should be fine . It will take a while to rebound this time of year . I would not let it dry out completely , keep it watered regularly until just the top of the soil dries. Harry

Thanks! Are coldest temperature was 4f in dec so not bad for z7a

What's going on with my neighbors Butia
Harry’s Palms replied to Keys6505's topic in COLD HARDY PALMS
I don’t think you have anything to be too concerned about . It is winter and I don’t know what your climate is there , but it may just have slowed down due to weather . From what I can see it looks pretty good . It is kind of scrunched in though. These get pretty big with a wide spread . I wouldn’t have planted it that close but that’s just me . I have planted palms very close to my house , but not large , thorny ones like that. Harry This was planted as a strap leaf seedling about 25 years ago , maybe more. I am glad I didn’t plant it next to my house!! The fronds reach out almost 8’ from the trunk in some places. The teeth on the petiole will tear into your skin. -
🤗 A surprise late winter bloom is developing quickly! Fresh ripe seeds are being picked daily. Another 200 seeds will be available over the next 2 weeks. Reserve yours now. Only $15 total per 50 seeds sent post paid. It's really a great hardy and compact palm for today's smaller residential yards.🌴 aztropic Mesa, Arizona

Right?? I knew that canopy helps but I wasn't expecting this massive difference. Unless damage will show later, dunno, it's too early perhaps. But outside the canopy the damage was obvious from the first day! Now I know that in March I will plant 2-3 fast growing evergreen trees and cover as much of the garden as possible!

Great post! Can’t wait to see how that Needle Palm looks when matured. What was your coldest temp in December?

27F this morning. Multiple hours below freezing. High is forecast to reach the low to mid 60s today ahead of the next front.
