If anything the angle used for the pair of leaves on the ground underestimates the actual difference between the two. The larger of my pair of Encephalartos ituriensis is flushing now but I am waiting for it to get further along in the process before sharing photos. Mine hasn't attained the caudex height of yours yet. I will have to count flush leaves on both of mine now, as the theory you posed is interesting. My male Encephalartos turneri is mid flush right now. Old cones from last year are still partially hanging on. It is another species that starts it's flush quite furry.

I’m seeing more upgrades as well today. The risk of us seeing 40C / 104F again is increasing for next week. The June record certainly looks like it is going to get smashed next week. Potentially 3-4 days of 100F+ here. ARPEGE high res has 39C / 102F on Tuesday for me here. UKV showing similar with 38/39C on Wednesday. So maybe 2 consecutive days of 100F there for us down south basically. Neither model goes beyond that period as they are short range models. GFS however has 100+ degrees F again on Friday too. For some of us in Western Europe, this will probably be the worst heatwave ever on record, especially in parts of France.

Hi! I would realy need help with identifying this phoenix palm species. I got this palm from my mother-in-law. I asked her numerous times if she recalls where she got it and what species it is. Once she said that it could have been grown from a seed, which she found in a park, but doesn't know from which tree species it is (there were many). The plant is almost 10 years old and potted. It has a yellowish colour and slightly arching leaves that resemble phoenix canariesis. It also has a basal sucker that looks nothing like phoenix canariesis, which does not produce them (I know beacause I have some) and the leaf scales of the main trunk are starting to fall. The trunk is also just 20 cm thick which along with the sucker strongly favours phoenix dactylifera. The leaves are bright green, not silvery as in most date palms, but also not dark green as in canary ones. One difference is also the spear which opens when the entire leaf is out (canariensis opens leaves much quicker). Thak you!

I just scored a fantastic deal on a bucket list palm for me. I got an Old Man Palm, Coccothrinax crinita, with 2 ft of hairy trunk for $72 !! So now I have to keep it alive. I am looking for advise on how to successfully grow this in zone 9a in a pot. North Florida Gulf Coast Panhandle region. Super hot and muggy now and got it in full all day sun. But winter is right around the corner and I know it might spend 3 months in my garage in Dec/Jan/Feb. Thanks!

You can aspire to this. No such thing as too close 😝. You can see its already trunking in 2008 and made it into 2021. Yes that is Chrysiladocarpus lutescens next to it in 2008 during Houston's great warm period. They can be quite hardy even out in the open...this one planted circa mid 2000s in colder west Houston (Westheimer) made it to 2018. A good number of Ravenea rivularis in warmer areas in the 610 Loop and southeastern Houston made it to 2021 even out in the open. There are still some in New Orleans.

The UKMO (Met Office) pulls in a 25C+ hPa 850 airmass into southern England which would be near all-time record breaking for upper level heat. What does that translate to at surface level you might ask? Well… 40C / 104F in Somerset and Dorset in southwest England. So even hotter than the July 2022 heatwave for some places. Even 37C / 100F in Wales… in June. The ECM (Euro) has 38C / 101F for London on Tuesday and like 6 consecutive days of 35C+ / 95F+. There are worrying scenarios in there which feature all-time records later next week. Unlikely to occur, but still crazy to see on models. The Atlantic trying to fend off the heat for us, but SE England going well into the 40’s C potentially on some runs. 107F for west London on this…

The more upright leaves makes me think Fischeri. I have a lot of them in my garden, Vasquez leaves tends to hang a bit. But that’s in my garden and not all gardens are the same!

Well written words, people hear the word licuala and think tropical water loving, not cool tolerant and down right hard to grow. Like you said they are over looked for some strange reason. They are fantastic container specimen palms. And the amount of different phenotypes available is staggering. I guess a lot of growers are distracted by other more popular palms. I say dont underestimate the licualas!

There are certain palms that are for sale that where once worth a lot of money. But sometimes they are not worth a lot of money. Anyone want to buy a rhapis palm!

Nice picture, there a palm to me that needs to be keeped clean and thinned out. I have seen some beastly looking clumps. Still a nice palm if kept in check, let it get out of control and it’s not the same beautiful well tended one that has that cultivated look.
