One of my favourite palms kerriodoxa elegans
Tropical Toni replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEdo these require super high humidity ? I have one in the garden. The lighting is a mixture of bright shade part of day & filtered light. It's under canopy. I water it well but noticed the tips can brown easily. The palm is still small though. Thinking it was an acclimation issue since it came from Florida ( I'm in California where its more dry but the microclimate it's in, I try to boost humidity with watering often). Have you found them to brown tip easily ? Or maybe it's when they are just juvenile ? - Today

Why is there no list of nurseries?
SCVpalmenthusiast replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in ADMINISTRATIONFunny enough I found an excellent nursery about 80 miles away, they have a wide variety of somewhat rare palms. Im not necessarily interested in becoming a collector and obtaining the rarest palms in cultivation, but like many I prefer palms that aren’t the typical big box store palms. I would agree to research diligently if you want to be a collector. But there’s plenty of nurseries that carry common exotic palms like various Dypsis, chamadoreas, etc. I think the reason why these uber rare collectors palm nurseries go out of business is there’s simply not a huge demand. The hardcore collectors would rather collect seeds and exchange them with other hardcore collectors. But there are middle ground nurseries that are very successful.

Texas Palms
RedRabbit replied to MarcusH's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSI appreciate the concern about it being planted too close, but a majesty would be toast if it were planted open yard here. When I recorded 27f by the house it was 20f open yard… The temp drops quick as you move away from a house. -

What level of membership is required to gain access to the archived journals?
kinzyjr replied to Austinpalm's topic in IPS GENERAL DISCUSSIONS@Austinpalm I think I was able to replicate the login that was failing. The logon screen was a WordPress login and wouldn't be our IPS account credentials. This is probably the screen you're referring to: I did find a way to have some success. Try this and let me know if it works. Type a year in the Search textbox and press Enter. The page will spin for a little bit and then bring up some search results. If you want to keep the results up, right-click an archived journal link and select Open link in new tab. On the tab that opens, you should be able to read or download the issue. Hope this works for you. -

What level of membership is required to gain access to the archived journals?
Austinpalm replied to Austinpalm's topic in IPS GENERAL DISCUSSIONSAm going to the page with the latest journal issues. I am able to open or look at the various issues on that page and download various articles. What I cannot do is a search for one of the archived journals. Basically, anything prior to late 2024. I type in a search topic, and nothing happens. I enter a volume number and them am told that I need to click on a link to the archived journals. Then am told that I need to sign in. When I enter my username/password which has already been accepted, I am told that my username/password is not good. So I am unable to look at any of the journals from before Oct/Nov 2024 or so. -

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"
flplantguy replied to SubTropicRay's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEI miss rainy season. I too hope this isnt the new normal, but have seen climate projections suggesting we will get closer to an arid Cuba climate in the future. It seems like we cant win, either la nina brings freezes and dry winters, or el nino brings hot dry summers (at least early) and wetter winters that are less useful for the garden. Gardening anywhere has challenges, but it seems like Florida hates us on the west coast again this year. Up to 7 days this summer at 80 for the low temp and upper 90s mulitple times, both more than typical for here. After 12 freezes this past winter, and the heat now, Florida is making the case for desert style landscapes in the future. Im going that route anyway for much of my front yard, outside natives that hopefully do well. -
Who has a backyard nurseries in Southern California? Just bought a house!
SCVpalmenthusiast replied to kylecawazafla's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEBecarriopheonix handles the desert, many folks here in AZ have Royal palms they thrive in heat.

kinzyjr replied to Austinpalm's topic in IPS GENERAL DISCUSSIONSDusted off Chrome for a test drive. Everything below is without logging in on the latest version of Chrome: Went to site: https://publications.palms.org/ and scrolled down to the first available issue (March 2026) as a test. I right-clicked the Download This Issue button and selected Save link as. Click Save on the dialog to download the file. It occurred to me that I might be misunderstanding what you're trying to do. Let me know if that is the case. -

What level of membership is required to gain access to the archived journals?
kinzyjr replied to Austinpalm's topic in IPS GENERAL DISCUSSIONS@Austinpalm Are you using a PC? Phone? Which browser? I'm currently on a PC and using the latest version of Firefox (152.0.1). I logged on here first: https://palms.org/Membership Then opened a new tab and went to: https://publications.palms.org/ Your browser might be locked down so tight it isn't recognizing that you've authenticated. That's just a shot in the dark, though. -
What level of membership is required to gain access to the archived journals?
Austinpalm replied to Austinpalm's topic in IPS GENERAL DISCUSSIONSThanks for the response. I have been trying that and it does not work for whatever reason. I can log in prior and am told I need to log in again. Then am told that my username/password is wrong. I clicked on the link you sent and indicated that I wanted to review volume 16. Very quickly, I am told that I need to sign in. When I try, I am told that my username/password is incorrect. So no luck so far. -

Things are moving slow in the palms in pots section
Kreps replied to happypalms's topic in PALMS IN POTSVery nice! Adonidia dransfieldii is still pretty uncommon in cultivation compared to the standard Christmas Palm, and those seedlings look healthy with some good color in the stems already. It'll be interesting to see how they develop over the next few years.
