Dwarf Sabal minors in Texas

Hi all, I thought I'd share this spectacular Facebook post from the local plant legend Adam Black yesterday (He's OK with me sharing it). Does anyone live nearby this population to check for seed? "The coolest find today was a population of miniature Sabal minor! There are several well-known sites in Florida with similar dwarf plants, but this is the first I have heard of from Texas. Note how they are mature at this size with the old inflorescences...a normal young Sabal minor would not flower at this size, there would be fewer leaves, and they would not be this divided. Like some of the FL dwarfs, these are growing among normal-sized plants...you can see one i…

Trachy getting yellow-green fronds and folding in 7b.

I got a couple of young windmill palms, maybe about 3 years old, last year. They overwintered just fine, but now in spring, I'm noticing the leaves are more of a yellow green, and are getting a few brown spots here and there which don't seem to be leaf burn. I did realize that I forgot to fertilize them last fall so I assumed it was a nutrient deficiency. I gave them some Jobes palm food about 2 weeks ago. We had a crazy rainy March but the last month was pretty average rainfall for here on Long Island I'm not super concerned, but I did buy another one that's nice and healthy blue-green, so the difference is really stark right now. Any ideas on the likely cul…

Hey everyone. I am just looking for some opinions about planting my two trachycarpus tails in this particular spot. It faces east southeast, so they would benefit from the afternoon shade for years to come. My biggest concern is that trachycarpus like to grow straight up. It is about 11ft to the eave of the roof. If I plant them in this spot, will they grow straight up into the roof, or will they lean themselves out toward the light to get out from underneath the roof line?

First windmill Palm!

Hello, I got my first windmill palms from palmpei zone 6 Massachusetts in palm citrus cactus soil and 3 gal pots. We’re supposed to get cool rain tomorrow so I will bring them under an over hang or inside somewhere. Just watered and they’re in the hot sun. I might move them in a cooler spot in an hour but they need sun. Here’s the spear too, also musa Basjoo baby banana. Thank you to everyone for your help I’m really excited to watch these grow! As far as the spear should I be worried about the discoloration or is it fine. I bet it’s fine I’m just worrying to much I’ve never owned these. They will go on my deck which gets full sun every day but I might move them in the sh…

Trachycarpus finally germinated after 38 days

20% of them have already germinated in the past few days, with more of them to come! I use the baggy method and tuck them away in the corner of the bathroom, where it benefits from the humidity to allow faster germination. I harvested them straight from the Dublin botanical gardens in ireland. In regards to planting them, i presume I place the growing side facing upwards, right? (that is, before adding a layer of soil on the top)

My sad box store Trachy palm
by WSimpson- 6 replies
I bought this Trachy at a box store about 10 years ago and it has always been my least hardy Trachy and ugliest palm . I am going to do everything I can for it so that it looks decent soon . I've already fertilized it with palm fertilizer , and I've been watering it . All the fronds were zapped after quick 6F shot of cold air came down around Christmas year before last , so all the green fronds on it now were all grown during the warm season last year . With the exception of that 1 cold snap , the winter 2 winters ago was a mild winter . The worst part of it is that it is in the front yard and has a landscape light that comes on it at sunset till about 12:00am…

Sabal Minor in New Hampshire z6?
by 603Tropics- 2 followers

Hello this is my first post. I’ve been growing palms for 3 years now but only in containers that I overwinter indoors since I’m in New Hampshire zone 6. Today I decided to start planting my Sabal minor in the ground and about a foot down into digging I realized the ground is only sand. It’s very fine sand. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting but will this be a suitable planting spot for the Sabal minor? I’m going to back fill with a mix of potting soil, native soil, compost and course pumice. Then mulch over top. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on how I should plant this palm and/or info on how this palm will do in zone 6 with our bipolar New England climate. T.…

CIDP recovery/death progress

Canary Island Date Palm, freeze 10F damage. The palm was wrapped and heated,... obviously not enough! It is a continuation of this thread with a better title: https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/83670-spear-pull-moisture-after-rain/ A month after spear pull and a week after cut. About 90% of the top tissue is solid, 10% soft (damaged?). Hydrogen peroxide bubbling is low to medium. The top is wet every morning = there is water conductivity in the remaining tissue. Good? or Bad? Avg daily temps recently about 75F, max 85F. !!!Unfortunately, there is no growth!!! 😢 I don't know if it's still too cold? Or will the palm not recover and di…

Nice Amount of Spring Rain
by GregVirginia7- 2 replies

Spring rains and feeding have really brought my Trachy back to the crown it had before the weird rollercoaster winter of 2022/23. It really suffered single digits. And now…damaged bottom fronds are the only ones left. Most all others are new. It is loaded with inflorescence and I’ve let it go. I’ve always cut them off but they do have some aesthetic interest…if tons of little yellow balls drop to the ground, does that indicate male or female? I guess it’s on its way to 12’…what a great palm tree this has been!

Sabal IDs
by Gville Palms- 2 replies

I own some acreage that I partly garden on and partly just let be a forest. Lots of sabals grow in the forest part of my yard that I’ve never taken much of an interest in because there’s so many of them that they are more or less like weeds. That said, there are a few decent sized ones I have always liked and that I’ve gone out of my way to take care of. I’m curious if any of the Sabal fanatics on here have an idea as to what varieties they may be because there’s clearly some significant differences structurally between them. I have put some pictures below. This first one is about 7 or 8 feet tall. The way the fronds fold almost looks like Sabal palmetto but most eve…

I'm on the warpath against some Mugwort that I lazily allowed to get established over the last few years , and when I was spraying it I accidentally sprayed some small volunteer Trachys that were hidden underneath it . So I cut off all the fronds on the small Trachys figuring that by cutting off the fronds I was also cutting off the Roundup that was on the fronds . We'll see if that works ? Anybody else accidentally sprayed something ? What was the outcome ? I'll update on my success or failure with these small Trachys . Thanks , Will The larger Trachy in the back left didn't get spray on it .

Northeast cold hardy palms

I’m curious who else in the northeast has had success growing palms. What kinds and where are you from? I’ve been posting periodically since I planted my Trachy in 2019. It’s certainly been slower growing up here in coastal Maine, but with some winter protection during winter storms and cold snaps they’ve all continued to grow. I have both sabal minor and needle palms successes and failures. But overall next to the foundation has been a huge plus. The sabals are the least protected of all the palms and they are doing well three years in with new additions each year. I also added a yucca rostrata in 2021. It’s taken a beating last winter because it was so wet but it s…

I've been meaning to prune the suckers off my Needle for years , plus weeds were getting up and around it and it was so full of sucker fronds that I had a hard time dealing with the weeds . Now it's easy to deal with and I can see what's going on with the main trunk . I just fertilized it and watered it well ; I'm planning on a lot of new frond growth this summer . Bull ? Overview :

Phoenix Sylvestris dying after 6 years
by Skiddy- 8 replies

I'm not sure exactly what the root cause of the infection is but my Sylvester Palm got hit with something that started last fall. The branches started browning from bottom or oldest first and has now, over seven months later, taken over the entire branch system. The tree is about 7-9 years old and stands roughly 15-20 ft tall. The only green I can still see is the newest growth from the crown. Very sad as this has been a beauty over the years. Always getting compliments from our neighbors. My landscape friend told me it has been hitting this area of Florida (West central gulf coast) and can be spread by birds, in which I have noticed several nesting Doves and Mocking bi…

We are building a new house on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (zone 9a). The house is about 98% done, and we are working on the landscaping. Tomorrow, 12 hours from now, we are having planted: - Four sable palmettos - Four mule palms - One four-trunk bottle palm - One four-trunk pigmy date palm - Various fruit trees (mostly citrus) On the lot there is a pre-existing Mexican fan palm, and two clusters of what we think are dwarf palmettos. I am very concerned about the bottle palm. It was expensive: $260 from Lowes. My wife wants to plant it beside the pool enclosure beneath a second floor deck. It would be heavily shaded here. The area receives a little …

Hello everybody I'm relatively new in this beautiful world of palm trees 🌴 but I love them and offcourse with my dumb luck I am born and raised I Norway, but the silver lining is that I live on the all the way down south In a small town called Farsund. But it's a hassle to find companies that ships to norway because we are not a member off the EU (we want all the oil money to ourselves 🙈) If there is one soul here that knows about someone who ships to Norway, please let me know.
