Trachy left to fend for itself in Sweden

Hi everyone, First post in this forum for me. Hardy palms and other exotics are something I've been interested in for quite some time (decades) and I've tried my luck planting them out north of Stockholm - in a cold city called Uppsala (just south of 60N latitude and lot colder than Stockholm in winter) many years ago. Through the years it went surprisingly well - every time we had a big freeze I just covered the Trachycarpus and other exotics in snow, which we had a lot of some decades ago. They survived this way for quite a few years - until I moved to Stockholm for work. To my knowledge the fig trees are still there - turned into fat bonsai's by now. A few y…

With so many fertilizer brands on the market it's not easy to pick the right one. For now I'm using a Big Box Store brand ( Miracle-Gro) . What brand is the Mercedes under all fertilizer?

This is a Jubaea Chilensis grown from seed and it’s officially putting out a first leaf. These things can be tough to get sprouted and can easily rot with too little sunlight or too damp soil. soil mix: peat/top soil/earthworm castings mixed together and then the resulting medium finally mixed with 50% perlite. pots are deep “disposable” plastic pots from Amazon. humid zone 8a Alabama.

Progress for the Zapped Medi.
by GregVirginia7- 2 replies
No big deal but really happy with the recovery of the Medi so far…after total defoliation on the big trunk, I thought it was a goner but spear growth is like a rocket… I fed it good with PalmGain in March and will do it again mid-June…mulched and watered well but not too much water as it likes things a bit dry. Smaller trunks are really growing as well…this palm has such a great history…from garden center greenhouse, three fronds covered in mites and about 10” tall…delivered into the hands of a complete palm newbie and into the ground…it is now two 12” and one 3’ trunk…very glad it didn’t die. Will make sure to keep close tabs on it this winter…if El…

Washingtonia filifera seedling variation 1 2 3
by Las Palmas Norte- 2 followers

I started some Washingtonia filifera recently from two different trees. A friend gave them to me who'd been in Arizona, both in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Even at this very early stage there appears to be a distinct difference in coloring at the base of these small starts. The one collected in Scottsdale is a white / cream color, while the Phoenix seedlings exhibit a reddish color, very reminiscent of W.robusta. I've also started a reliable "filibusta" hybrid which has about 95% of the seedlings showing the reddish cinnamon color. My question is it too early, even at this very early stage, to make any certain determinations as to a true species ID? Should I wait till th…

Sabal Palms in zone 5

Hi everyone I, I just joined the group and wanted to share with you my Sabals this is the 3rd year for one and the second for the other 3. I also have 4 Christmas palms that are in pots which I keep indoors during the winter months. I do protect the Sabals in the winter by putting up a temporary green house and wrapping the trees with some c-9 lights. So far so good. The oldest Sabal is producing fruit, my hope is to plant them and see if they will germinate.

Sabal McCurtain too Deep?
by GregVirginia7- 10 replies
This Sabal McCurtain has bee in ground for several years…not enough sun but it seems happy…anyway, it’s at the bottom of the bank and with added mulch and holly leaves seems to have gotten buried a bit? I know Sabals are a trunk underground palm but if the crown gets buried too deep is that a problem? I see the heal but heavy, wet dirt is enveloping the crown…any advise?

Hi, I'm in the UK and have a Chamaerops Humilis, I've had it for nearly three years and has been doing fine. However I've recently noticed in the centre what looks like rot or fungus (I don't know, see picture) from the new growth. Should I be worried and/or what can I do to help? Thanks all.

Interesting Washingtonia recovery
by DreaminAboutPalms- 2 replies
This seedling i started last summer had spear pull from December freeze when we hit 11, and as it recovers it appears a dead leaf base that rotted off in middle is stuck to the new growth. This is why it’s important that Washingtonia get heat after being mined with cold, because if this spear didn’t keep moving it might have not made it and died of rot

Hello everyone, i am new to the hobby. I picked up two windmill palms last year. They grew decent. Just picked up two more this year. For some reason they seem to be getting brown and yellow toward the ends and they are not growing as well. I fertilized them at the beginning of this season And i try to water them once a week. I am just a little lost on how to care for them at this point. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sabal early summer surprise
by Chester B- 1 follower

This winter was the worst one I experienced and as a result I lost a number of smaller palms and had a number of spear pulls. This week alone I found three more palms exhibiting damage now that we have really warmed up to summer like temperatures. Two of the early casualties were a Sabal uresana and a Sabal causiarum both in the ground for three years. I left the stumps in place “just in case” with the plan on waiting until the end of June to officially call it. Well to my surprise the Uresana started growing last week and just today I noticed the causiarum had moved. First pic is uresana showing some blue/green and the second is the causiarum that has grown and covered a…

I was wondering if a young Queen only grows a few fronds a year since mine only grew 2 fronds so far and it's already mid May. My Queen palm defoliated in December 2022. I read under good growing conditions they can grow 6 fronds a year. Do they mean growing season or the entire year? I fertilize the palm with a slow release miracle go fertilizer. Don't know if it's a good brand. Any Queen palm growers out there who can share some experiences and advises ?

Hello, I live in Oregon where it has been a wet winter. I was trimming my Windmill Palm and noticed some brown to the inner fronds and also some wilting. I haven"t fed it yet this season but was planning on doing so. We have not really had any recent freezes and my other Windmill Palm in the same backyard seems to be fine. Any cause for concern or suggestions? Thank you!, Brian

@Allen was Right
by GregVirginia7- 7 replies

@Allen was right. He said wait till spring to determine damage after the short lived Christmas freeze and he was right…I thought my unprotected Trachy made it through relatively unscathed but by early spring I could see it didn’t…fronds were pretty much all affected…hoping by end of summer it will have recovered completely… It is really sending out inflorescence…I cut about 8 off three weeks ago and will remove this latest round. I really want the energy to go to frond growth and not seeds. The unprotected Brazoria has 3 new fronds on the move but it lost several as well…flower spike emerging as well. The unprotected Needle was unaffected. In fact, given t…

Black spots on Mule palm frond.
by Desert Badger- 2 replies
This picture is of a new frond on a mule palm. The palm was hit hard by this past winter’s freeze but the fronds that survived and the new frond is growing. But the new frond from the heart is very droopy and has black spots (see picture) that wipe off. There also were a number of ladybugs (what I call them) inside the frond as well. So, are the black spots a fungus or mold? Caused by an insect? If so use a neem oil or similar? Or nothing to be concerned about as it is growing. Thank you for your insight ahead of time!

Butia surprises after 6F
by WSimpson- 13 replies
I really didn't know what would happen to this Butia and its inflorescences this growing season after 6F last winter , but it's nice to see healthy looking inflorescences growing out . I just noticed them 10 minutes ago . I've had 3 inflorescences grow out a couple years ago , but it's nice to see these 2 . Will I trimmed off the dead parts of the fronds a month ago or so . New growth is coming in nicely . I will be watering and fertilizing next week .
