Tragic news. Just found out that Charlie Maas (CharlieM here on PalmTalk) died Thursday March 26th. Charlie was a past Vice President of Hawaii Island Palm Society, a good friend, and an enthusiastic palm grower with a beautiful garden on Alapai Street, one street away from where I live. My thoughts go out to his wife J. and family. Charlie will definitely be missed. Bo-Göran

I never met him, but will provide further information as it becomes available. Those who knew him are invited to share their memories. Here is a picture of Mr. de Leon, on the right.

Sad to hear news of John's passing today. John, past IPS and PACSOA member and director, and husband of past IPS director Jeanne Price, had been ill for several years. He did a lot for the palm world, and was the long time editor of PACSOA's 'Palms and Cycads' magazine. My sincere condolences to Jeanne and family on this sad occasion.

Vince ran a modest nursery under the powerlines off the Cherry Avenue exit from the 91 freeway in North Long Beach. He had a coconut and Zamia pseudoparasitica growing in his hothouse. He once gave me a bundle of palms that had rooted through the flat and said "Here you go - start a nursery." He passed away November 8.

Jeffrey R. Crandall (1939–2013)

This sad news from Bill Hemmer: Jeffrey R. Crandall (1939–2013) For those of you who can remember way back when: Teddy Buhler got Jeff to join the Palm Society (now the IPS) during our first palm sale at Fairchild Tropical Garden (now Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden). Jeff just decided to help out, bringing large purchases to customers’ cars with his trusty wheelbarrow. "Oh we must get Jeff to join the society," said Teddy. When our friend Paul Drummond became president in 1980 and held the 1982 Biennial in Miami and Key West (and now it comes around again in 2014!), I asked Jeff if he would like to help pull the Biennial together. I was Treasure at that ti…

John Ellement

Last night John Ellement, a long time member of the Western Australian plant and palm scene passed away after losing his fight with cancer. John was an unassuming, quietly spoken, hard working man who I had the privilege of knowing for a while. He started "Palms Galore", a well known palm nursery in WA and had been a member of the WA Palm and Cycad Society for a very long time. After he sold Palms Galore he started Wattleup Wholesale Nursery which continued to grow palms and cycads and was situated on a lake. He planted many palms, cycads and even a giant Pandanus on this lake and it later became known as Palm Lake. John was often seen rescuing older palms and cyc…

Ken Adcock has passed away
by Tyrone- 2 replies

On Sat 12th of October 2013, Ken Adcock, one of the founding members of the Palm and Cycad Society of Western Australia passed away. Ken worked for a long time in the WA Agricultural department and his love of palms was shared by his close friend and work colleague Peter Skinner. Together they decided to start PACSOWA back in 80's. I always found Ken a very helpful and knowledgable individual who was very supportive of those interested in gardens, but especially palms and cycads. His passing comes as a huge shock and he will be greatly missed. The WA tropical plant growing scene will be much poorer due to his absence. Goodbye Ken.

I've never posted on Palmtalk before, but it has come to my attention that one of the people responsible for the early mass distribution of palm seeds has died. I believe it would be hard to have palm garden that hasn't had a seed from Inge Hoffmann. She passed away after a long illness with cancer in San Leandro.

I received a call from Terry Sullivan this morning, informing Cindy and I that Pauleen Sullivan his mom, has passed away on Wednesday August 8th 2012. Cindy and I are very saddened to hear this. Pauleen, to us, will always be the palm queen. Her gardens in Ventura and Hawaii and her passion for palms have been very inspirational to me and many others. Pauleen has traveled all over the world for the love of her passion palm trees and has never let the fact that she was in a wheelchair, due to Polio, at a younger age stop her for any reason. I have many memories with Pauleen. I will never forget the time when she had spray painted a palm crownshaft orange as a prank, …
