Vince ran a modest nursery under the powerlines off the Cherry Avenue exit from the 91 freeway in North Long Beach. He had a coconut and Zamia pseudoparasitica growing in his hothouse. He once gave me a bundle of palms that had rooted through the flat and said "Here you go - start a nursery." He passed away November 8.

Vince was a good guy. I visited his nursery a number of times after I moved to La Habra, got a lot of plants from it. They included most of the A. purpureas in my garden, along with some of the A. tuckeri, and the four biggest B. alfredii.

RIP, Vince.

I visited Vince at his Nursery many years ago. The Ceroxylon alpinum liner I bought from him made it through the freeze of "07 and is doing quite well. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing.

Never knew him or met him, but always sad to hear the passing of the pioneers. :(

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Vince was the second person I met after I got into palms. He was always very friendly and patient to a newbie, and was always ready for a good laugh. I also got some nice palms at great prices from his cool little nursery under the powerlines. RIP.

  • 1 year later...

Just read this now. I hadn't seen Vince for many years. At the time I was the Editor of the Journal for So California palm society Vince and his wife were very active and knowledgable members of the palm society. They are also two of the nicest, friendliest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. I got a lot of great palms from Vince and he was a very successful palm grower. Sadly, the weird politics associated with running the society soured his experiences and eventually they both left the palm world for the more exciting one of off-road driving. Once he sold his nursery, I never saw him again which was too bad since he was a great guy and was always good to me and my wife. He passed before his time (pretty sure he was younger than I am). Very sad.
