A legend in the cycad world has passed on this morning. I met up with Loran a few times. He's a super nice guy! I will never forget our meeting at his garden!!! His book "The Cycads" is world famous and is a collectors item.

Wow. That is Sad news...I too remember his garden and tour.. super nice guy. Great masterpiece in unusual place.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Irrespective of his tremendous stature in the plant world, Loran was, above all, a great guy - a gracious and exceptional individual indeed.

Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.

I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.

The title "Legend" is probably bestowed more often than appropriate - but not in this case. Loran touched many with his passion and enthusiasm, and shared with many his knowledge. Sad news indeed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Loran and touring his garden last year. He was a most gracious host and a fountain of information. His personal garden remains in my mind one of the most impressive private gardens I have ever seen.

I can hardly believe he's gone. The whole plant world will miss him. What a great person... and friend.

A few shots of Loran in his garden...

He will be immortal in our remembrances.

I'll never forget his singular paradise of a garden in the middle of Los Angeles. An acre and a half of splendor, a perfect setting for a gathering of plant lovers.

RIP Mr. Whitelock.

Loran influenced me and my garden in many ways.

He will be missed both professionally and personally by many.

Just think how many gardens and collectors he influenced around the world and that is a legacy to be proud of!

Jim.

I can only echo everything that has been already said about him. On my visits to the Los Angeles area I'd often give him a call and see if I could drop by and take another look at his fantastic cycads and see what rare or unusual cycads he was growing from seed.

Many of my more unusual or rare cycads I have now came from him as sprouted seed or tiny seedlings. His passing is and will be a great loss for all, especially those having a great interest in Cycads.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
