Thermal effect of water

December of 2010 was the worst month of cold I've ever experienced in my 13 winters living in Highlands County, Florida. You can't get any farther inland between the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. As such, there is no thermal influence from both bodies of water. However, there is a thermal lake effect influence, but it doesn't carry far. I have three friends who live in a lake front community. All are master gardeners (as myself), hence they are concerned about and record low temperatures. Two of my friends live right on the lake (3,504 acres in area) and one friend lives about 500 feet of the east shore of the lake. On my coldest night last December I recorded a low …

For me, it is starting right now here in South East Queensland, that is, late summer to mid autumn. Great growing times, great days, great sunsets, the blue sky looks bluest, the general colour of everything looks grand. What's your favorite time of the year ?

Winter Weather Threat - February 2011 1 2 3 4

Hi all: I wanted to create this thread, with the correct year, as a continuation to the January thread. A few weeks ago, I had posted about the models latching-on to a possible outbreak of very cold arctic air spilling down the plains. Although the models were consistent, they were questionable as the cold air that was needed never really built-up in Canada as depicted. It's very common for the GFS to show some scary scenario 10-14 days away but the cold air needed to make it all happen is lacking. We have had the two fronts come down, and while very chilly, it's nothing record-breaking. Still - it's been below freezing at my house now for about 12 hours so this …

Check this out. It is way above my pay grade but it looks like more cold coming next week. This came from a topic on a Citrus forum. http://www.westwind.ch/?link=gfsm,http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rhavn,.gif,122,242,362,482,602,722,842,962,1082,1202,1322,1442,1562,1682,1802

Cyclone Anthony came ashore last night around Bowen as a Cat 2 cyclone. Next in line is Cyclone Yasi which looks to be the big one for the year. Here is a projected path track: http://www.usno.navy.mil/NOOC/nmfc-ph/RSS/jtwc/warnings/sh1111.gif Good luck to everyone up the coast. Bruce Fallbrook/ Childers

Snow igloo with a tropical flare

I'm placing a link to this forum for the SE USA. We're getting tired of winter around here and a fellow palm fan in Alabama built this awesome igloo then landscaped it with palms when MA Nature whacked him with yet another snow event. I thought some of you might find it as enjoyable as I did. This forum has some weather maps too so you have to scroll down to see the igloo. Its worth the effort! http://members3.boardhost.com/HardyPalm/msg/1296819424.html

Springtime In January
by Jim in Los Altos- 9 replies

Eating my late morning breakfast in my backyard in t-shirt and bermudas in the sun and eventually had to go into the shade. It was too warm! Today the mercury went into the 70s here for the first time in 2011 and the forecast for most of the Bay Area is for continued dry and warm weather possibly through the rest of January and with night time lows no lower than the 40s and 50s. Now the plan is to get through the middle of February above 32F and I'll have my first frost-free winter in a few years. My low so far this winter is 33F. We still need more rain too.

Topsy-Turvy Weather

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/25/science/earth/25cold.html?_r=2&hp=&pagewanted=all Interesting article that points out how for the past 2 winters, Arctic air has descended well into the middle latitudes while the North Pole is experiencing record warmth. The AO [Arctic Oscillation] created unusual cold last winter and again this winter in the Southern U.S. and a summer that broke all-time records for coolness along the U.S. West Coast. Maybe this is something we will be dealing with year after year.

Rain and disaster in Rio de Janeiro
by amazondk- 18 replies
- 1.8k views
The past few days have had torrential rains in Rio and surrounding areas. There are estimates that over 250 mm of rain fell in 24 hours in many areas. The mountain city of Teresopolis was especially hard hit with maybe 200 people or more dead as the mountainsides collapses and streams turned into rivers in flash floods. The mountains around Rio are granitic mountains that are very old and weathered. There are big boulders all over the place. These boulders once rolled down hillsides. So, even though yesterdays disaster was large similar events certainly have happened many times in the past. There just were not all the people living in areas where they happened. Th…

Have snow?
by Erik- 7 replies

Who has snow? I finally got my first snow of winter, but only about 1 cm -- not enough to protect the soil from the -15 oC I expect the next couple of nights. This map (found on HuffPo: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/11/snow-in-49-states-map_n_807741.html) shows that on 1/11/11, there was snow on the ground in 49 of 50 US states today. Pretty cool, huh?

January 2010 - Possible Arctic Outbreak 1 2

Hi all. I'm an avid weather watcher, I have been for many years, and this is a topic I feel deserves a new thread. There are not many times when I see an event depicted on the computer models that have me truly concerned about my garden. We see these horrific scenarios show-up all the time, only to drop off a few model runs later. It's not easy to get my feathers ruffled. To put things into perspective, since we moved to Houston in 2005 the first time I got really concerned was January of last year. And for good reason - I had a low of 19 and stayed below freezing for almost three days straight. Onto my point: the models are showing a potentially devastating cold…

Coldest Temps of Winter for California 1 2
by happ- 1 follower
- 6.2k views
California will be blasted with extremely cold temperatures into next week due to a pattern allowing Arctic air to flow easily down the West Coast. Frost and freeze warning are posted for tonight and Friday night for nearly all the coastal valleys in southern California. The wind last night gusted to over 40mph in metro Los Angeles yet the temperature still dropped to 43F\ 6.1C at my house. Tonight will not be as windy and dew points will be very low = frost for many locations. Weak storms are forecast to circulate down the trough into next week and usher in even colder air for California and the Southwest. The clouds and wind may be the only thing to save some garde…

December 2010 Summary
by spockvr6- 30 replies

Today was far and away the warmest day of the month for my station, wih a logged high of 79F. The values for the rest of the month are a bit chillier! The month has ended with an average temperature of 51.2F, which is 2.1F lower than the alltime record for Tarpon Springs of 53.3F (1903). The average high of 61.2F is actually lower than the normal average temperature for the month. Heres hoping for a better January! Look Out Florida, Its Coming Again II

Well, I'm not sure if this is heading your way, but after the cold left a couple days ago, we now have thunderstorms, a flash flood warning, and a tornado warning. Now having those things is not all that unusual down here, but thunderstorms and tornados in late December/early January is darned unusual. Hope you miss it, but the red warning flags are up.
