Super Heat - no rain - burnt offerings

Yesterday was close to the hottest day for 2012 here in Beerwah, temp reached 40c/104f. Add to that a series of hot days and no rain for a long long time, and what you get is damage to some plants, whilst some others carry on regardless. Here's some photos taken this morning on a day expected to reach 33c. The sun damaged include a Licuala ramsayii and a New Guinea lace tree fern, but have a gander at that whatsisname plant, really smashed:

Phoenix Area Cold Snap update

It has been two nights of this cold weather. So far, palms look good! Pigmy palms, so far have no damage, I did not cover any of them. Bizzy looks good, however, time will tell as I have read that damage may occur later in the week. My 5 foot tall chinese fan palm looks flawless. Washies, and B. Armata palms look normal. Cuban royal palms show no signs of damage, they are wrapped in tarps and covered in xmas lights, same with my triangle palm. Both of these palms are small enough to completely cover. The triangle being about 6 feet tall with about a foot of trunk. Lots of non palm casualties. All hibiscus are fried, and smell funny except for a few th…

Awoke this morning to the kitty cat burrowed under the covers, snug and comfy in a cold house. Outside, it got down to 32 F in the upper part of my yard, and 28.6 in the lower part. Cold, but no damage. The tender stuff had been covered up. How about the rest of you?

Hades opened up over Tas today ! We sure had a scorcher down here today on my day off it ended up reaching 45.2 C (113F ) here @ Old beach a record high . I set my computer control unit for the dripper system to come on for 2 hrs last night and again early this morning . I ran around like a maniac with the Hose soaking everything including hundreds of palm seedlings early this morning . The only damage i can see this evening is crispy fronds on my Cyathea medullaris tree fern and some damage on cyathea cooperii . All the palms seem ok except for some leaf scorching on Phoenix roebelenii in terrrecotta pots . Hedyscepe ,leppidorrachis and Rhopalostylis baueri …

Rainfall Rates
by MattyB- 10 replies
- 2.2k views
I'm looking at some blueprints and they give some interesting rainfall rate calculations that the gutters and downspouts have to hold up to: Rainfall Intensity (10 yr) = 2.2"/hr. San Diego, CA Rainfall Intensity (100 yr) = 3.1"/hr. San Diego, CA Anyone ever remember getting 2.2" of rain in an hour? I know that might be nothing for you guys in wetter climates, but if we got 2.2" of rain in an hour I think that there would be millions of dollars worth of damage caused by mudslides etc. What kind of heavy rainfall rates do y'all see in other parts of the world?

I'm not very happy with my current indoor/outdoor digital thermometer. It displays the temperature in 0.1 degree increments, but only records min/max in 0.5 degree increments. I didn't realize this until I noticed the pattern when posting those temperatures to my web site. It also has some commonly used controls relegated to the back of the display (i.e. the button to switch channels), and when the batteries go bad in one unit I need to remove them from all units to reset the entire system. Periodically I see threads on this board regarding weather stations or indoor/outdoor digital thermometers and I know at least a few folks here use them. Since the technology is con…

Southern California, winter is here
by nkbish- 6 replies

Tonight is the first cold night of the year. My area tonight is forecasted for 36 and tomorrow for 31. Within the last few hours NOAA has dropped the temperature by a couple degrees. Let's hope the high pressure moves in quick and the offshore winds keep the air moving and the frost down. I will be protecting some recently planted palms.

Cooler than normal fall for Central Florida
by palmsOrl- 1 follower

So far, we have had a cooler than normal autumn season here in Central Florida, especially the last 3-4 weeks. Temperatures have consistently been below average to average some days with periods of overcast weather ever since Hurricane Sandy passed to our east. I haven't had the air on for almost a month except for a day or two, and I am the type that keeps the thermostat at 70F year-round. I remember many years here where November was mostly 81-85F during the day and 60-65F at night. Temperatures and clouds have been perfectly to my liking but I have worried about my palm collection, to which I have added substantially in the last few months (ALL very tropical of c…

Hard to believe that one week ago my daytime high temp was 100f. Overnight lows the last two nights have been 38f and 39f. Double checked at my buddy's place a few miles away. And his temp at the top of the canyon was also 38f. Just wondering what others in the area are seeing for low temps now.
