What's your soil temperature?
by Jastin- 6 replies
- 1.7k views
What is your soil temperature? I came across a few articles on the effects of root development and plant/root growth. I have dense soil which takes a while to heat up and thus root development is slow( especially in the winter), which means my plants grow slower. Having a lighter soil mix allows the sun to heat the soil faster which speed up the process of root/plant development. This morning the air temp was 41 degrees at my house and my soil temp was 49 degrees. I checked my garden area with lots of new compost at the same time and it was 70 degrees. I've heard that root development stops at around 55-60 degrees (soil temp) Root system http://www.mendeley.com/…

North American Winter 2011 - 2012
by amazondk- 9 replies

I took a look at forcasts for North America this winter and came up with this map on neoweather.com. If this is the way it goest things do not look too bad for the southeast US palm areas. It does look bad for the northern plains where my parents live. And, if possible I hope to get there in the winter, as I can not make it before.

Early January Freeze. 1 2

I got up a little earlier this morning and looked at Wunderground, this is what I saw. http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=27.04283905&lon=-82.35276031&zoom=8&pin=Venice%2c%20FL I did not know how to save the page, but at 445am, it was 60F in Venice, and the Suncoast from Bradenton to Sanibel Island were all sitting between 57-62F. Oddly enough it was around 50F in Tampa, 48F in Naples, upper 30s to low 40s everywhere inland and south of Orlando, and mostly low 50s from West Palm to Miami. Even the northern Keys were colder than the Southwest coast here. I thought it was a misread temperature, so I went outside, and even with 30mph winds, I was no…

Florida Winter 1 2
by gsytch- 42 replies
- 4.7k views
We have had quite a bit of warmth lately. After a chilly rainfall and 50's on Monday, and a chilly 44F at my house Tues morning - the coldest yet - it warmed to near 80F since then, with near 80-F to the low 80's expected thru Thursday. The week before was very similar except the one night chill was barely 50F. Sunny, breezy, not much rain since Halloween. The warmer it stays the more nervous I get. I have not even covered my one shadehouse with plastic yet. Too warm. It is ready to go up and on in an hour though, just in case! I love it but I do not want all this luscious growth to get zapped! Why so cold? 1 2
by gsytch- 45 replies
- 4.4k views
Perhaps someone can shed some light. I've been here long enough to see quick cold snaps, but this year has me confused. There is little snow cover up north, and the land is relatively warm. The Gulf is warmish and yet tonight I am not getting any influence. The AO is not negative, yet this looks as cold as anything we had last year. I knew this arctic air was sitting in Alaska weeks ago, and I always worry when it gets that cold there...but how did this dip occur? It looked cold last week, but not this! I never went above 47F this afternoon and the wind was awful. Anyone chime in? How did this happen? Thanks!

Why Do Belem And Manaus Stay So Warm
by Rick Santos- 2 replies
- 1.5k views
What are the biggest reasons Manaus and Belem are always warm, compared to latitudes right at the Tropic of Cancer ? Is it the sun intensity? Or is it that they much too far away from the temperate latitudes that air might not be able blow down there? I imagine sun intensity has something to do with it also.

Record winter drought
by iwan- 10 replies
- 1.7k views
Last year was one of the wettest winters in local history. This year the driest. We have not had rain since Nov 20th and last December tied the record for no rain set in 1989. Some of you may remember 1989. I hope this is not an omen. We are about two weeks short of having the longest winter dry spell on record and the ten day forcast has no rain in sight. Luckily the central Sierra reservoirs are still well stocked from last winter.

Current Winds - San Diego
by MattyB- 1 reply
- 1.3k views
My dad found this link to a graphic of the current winds, updated every 10 minutes. We're up in Alpine right now and it's pretty darn windy with and Easterly Santa Ana wind. If you know the topography of San Diego it's interesting to link the terrain with the wind. Like you can see how the East wind comes down the San Pasqual valley in Escondido and hits the mountain by Lake Hodges and really roars. Or how the flat, low desert of Imperial Valley suddenly raises up to the mountains and it really ramps up. Current Winds Link

Good news for east coast winter (or lack thereof)

From Accuweather's Henry Margusity NAO, PNA and La Nina Are Just Ruining Our WinterDec 12, 2011; 9:36 AM ET Discussion Videos will resume on Wednesday when I am back in the office. In the meantime, the weather pattern, while stormy, is not the one snow lovers in the eastern part of the country want to see prior to Christmas. Here is why.... La Nina - Remains weak, so pattern remains typical of a La Nina with the cold weather in the West and northern Plains and the warmth across the East. The storm track has been from the southwest to the western Great Lakes. NAO - North Atlantic Oscillation remains positive, so no blocking and therefore no East Coast storm…

Miami And The Tropic Of Cancer 1 2
by Rick Santos- 1 follower

I realize the Tropic of Cancer is an important area on the earth. What makes the sun appear directly overhead on the summer solstice? I know the tilt of the earth has something to do with it but : *Is the curve of the earth steeper or different in that part of the world and that also contributes? It appears so when you look at Miami and the tropics ( from the side ) of a Google Earth download * Is it necessary to go somewhat below the Tropic of Cancer to get tropical level sunlight intensity, vegetation etc. or is Miami close enough to the tropic line to get those benefits most of the year? *If you had to compare latitude 25 N to the true official tr…

Funnel cloud in San Diego

I was at work today and glanced out my window and saw this...Pretty exciting, I'd never seen a funnel cloud before. It lasted for several minutes and you could clearly see it rotating. It was much more impressive than the photo seems, but definitely not big enought to be scary. This is just off the coast from the driving range of the Torrey Pines Golf Course in North San Diego (La Jolla). Matt
