Any Advice For An Old Man (Coccothrinax crinita)
Alicehunter2000 posted a topic in PALMS IN POTSI just scored a fantastic deal on a bucket list palm for me. I got an Old Man Palm, Coccothrinax crinita, with 2 ft of hairy trunk for $72 !! So now I have to keep it alive. I am looking for advise on how to successfully grow this in zone 9a in a pot. North Florida Gulf Coast Panhandle region. Super hot and muggy now and got it in full all day sun. But winter is right around the corner and I know it might spend 3 months in my garage in Dec/Jan/Feb. Thanks! -

Texas Palms
Xenon replied to MarcusH's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSYou can aspire to this. No such thing as too close 😝. You can see its already trunking in 2008 and made it into 2021. Yes that is Chrysiladocarpus lutescens next to it in 2008 during Houston's great warm period. They can be quite hardy even out in the open...this one planted circa mid 2000s in colder west Houston (Westheimer) made it to 2018. A good number of Ravenea rivularis in warmer areas in the 610 Loop and southeastern Houston made it to 2021 even out in the open. There are still some in New Orleans. -
What is your current yard temperature?
UK_Palms replied to GottmitAlex's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEThe UKMO (Met Office) pulls in a 25C+ hPa 850 airmass into southern England which would be near all-time record breaking for upper level heat. What does that translate to at surface level you might ask? Well… 40C / 104F in Somerset and Dorset in southwest England. So even hotter than the July 2022 heatwave for some places. Even 37C / 100F in Wales… in June. The ECM (Euro) has 38C / 101F for London on Tuesday and like 6 consecutive days of 35C+ / 95F+. There are worrying scenarios in there which feature all-time records later next week. Unlikely to occur, but still crazy to see on models. The Atlantic trying to fend off the heat for us, but SE England going well into the 40’s C potentially on some runs. 107F for west London on this… -

I wonder if anyone is interested in buying a rhapis excelsia
tim_brissy_13 replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI love the specific $14210.70 asking price 🤣. They could ask for $142 and still struggle to attract a buyer. -

Zamia Vasquezii or Fisheri?
happypalms replied to Palmiz's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsThe more upright leaves makes me think Fischeri. I have a lot of them in my garden, Vasquez leaves tends to hang a bit. But that’s in my garden and not all gardens are the same! -
Container growing licualas
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in PALMS IN POTSWell written words, people hear the word licuala and think tropical water loving, not cool tolerant and down right hard to grow. Like you said they are over looked for some strange reason. They are fantastic container specimen palms. And the amount of different phenotypes available is staggering. I guess a lot of growers are distracted by other more popular palms. I say dont underestimate the licualas! -
I wonder if anyone is interested in buying a rhapis excelsia
happypalms posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThere are certain palms that are for sale that where once worth a lot of money. But sometimes they are not worth a lot of money. Anyone want to buy a rhapis palm! -
Caryota mitis
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDENice picture, there a palm to me that needs to be keeped clean and thinned out. I have seen some beastly looking clumps. Still a nice palm if kept in check, let it get out of control and it’s not the same beautiful well tended one that has that cultivated look. -
For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

Caryota mitis
Palms1984 replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEIt fuuny you say that people like or dislike Caryota mitis. I personally think they look pretty messy with too many trunks. My friends have a beautiful one that have five naturally spaced trunks. It looks awesome! I’ll post a pic from Halloween last year.

Dypsis decaryi
Palms1984 replied to Hu Palmeras's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHere in San Diego I’ve grown many Dypsis decaryi in the 26 years I’ve lived here and always have watered them very often. I’ve never had one die. I guess I’ve been very lucky. There’s several very large trees in my neighborhood and the only problem I’ve seen on a few is the baterial problem which affects the fronds and eventually kills the tree.

One of my favourite palms kerriodoxa elegans
happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThat one is over 25 years old, but it was in a container all those years only recently planted. The larger leaf picture is the same age as well yet it has 6 feet long petioles and not far of forming a trunk , so growing conditions do dictate growth. Get them in the ground! Also the other ones are the same age from an original purchase some 25 years ago, only now since I have gotten back into my garden they have really started to move on, water or lack of was the main reason for such slow growth. -
Chambeyronia about to flower
Palms1984 replied to JD in the OC's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEUnfortunately, I don’t have a shady spot in the ground for it.😞. It will have to stay in a big pot for now. 😎

Container growing licualas
Kreps replied to happypalms's topic in PALMS IN POTSGreat overview. I think a lot of people overlook Licuala because they assume they're difficult or ultra-tropical, but many species are surprisingly adaptable once you understand their water and drainage requirements. The diversity within the genus is what really makes them addictive-one plant can have almost perfectly circular leaves while another looks completely different. I also agree that their relatively slow growth makes them excellent candidates for greenhouse collections, where space is always at a premium. They're definitely a genus that deserves more attention from palm growers.

Iguanura palms
Kreps replied to happypalms's topic in PALMS IN POTSThat's impressive. Iguanura isn't a genus most people would think of when talking about cold tolerance, so it's always interesting to hear real-world experiences that challenge the conventional wisdom. It sounds like the key was figuring out their moisture requirements some palms will forgive a dry spell, but others really let you know when they're unhappy. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's useful information for anyone experimenting with less common species. For people trying to identify unusual palms or compare species I have found https://botanapp.com/identifier/palms to be a great palm tree identifier.
