Honza posted a topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsHello, My yucca Rostrata will go into the ground. Do you have experience with 100% mineral substrate around the ball, no organics? I have very heavy clay soil and that would destroy it. It will need cover in the winter. At the moment I have a small package full of coconut fiber from the seller, I will leave it and I would like to settle it in 100% mineral. The clay is dug up, deep drainage and water drainage away through a drainage pipe. I am from Czech Republic. In summer temperatures up to 37°C and in winter down to -20°C. And a pretty rainy autumn. happypalms posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDETwo palms that have surprisingly taken the cool weather quiet. The Calyptrocalyx was the biggest surprise as they are quite fussy, and the dypsis was a surprise as well for such a tropical looking palm. Either way both have lived through my winters in the ground with temperatures dropping down to 2 degrees celcius.

Both are 30 years old, one is raging along while its cousin is still doesn’t even have a trunk, planted about 3 meters apart. They are tough palms and have done the job that I wanted when planted with a vision. I see them planted around the place in my home town in full sun situations but to me they look better in shade I think. A wonderful tough palms and worth growing!

happypalms replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEAtbb VB it again getting a spring batch of seeds in, bottom heating 30 degrees celcius. Although it’s going to get a bit cool at night now so I think k the ambient temperature will most likely be around 25 degrees celcius. A stack of licuala varieties, along with some cycad seeds. Even a batch of Zamia inermis from Nature girl in the good US, they shall be treasured little babies when they germinate. Some good varieties rare and exotic for all tastes! Time will tell how successful this little batch of seeds are.

Tracy replied to happypalms's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsTonight when I was walking by just as the sun was about to set, I noticed how attractive it is for both our native humming birds and hooded orioles. Both varieties of birds were flitting from flower to flower as we approached these bromeliads. That is an added bonus to growing them, feeding the native birds. -

kinzyjr replied to Golden10's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEMy two largest coconuts are recovering, but not fully out of the woods. All of my healthy Chrysalidocarpus. Some stuff was alive and sulking and I didn't want to waste a single rain shower since we don't get rain everyday anymore, so I dug it out and replaced the bulk of the other tropicals with Brahea, Livistona, and other stuff that is a lot more cold-tolerant. There are some photos of the coconuts on page 9 of the 2026_02 - Florida Palmageddon thread, along with several other species over time as I get around to the various gardens in town. Don't want to hijack this thread. The topic is interesting and intriguing.

I feel like I’ve removed what others would consider grail plants just to thin the heard. Tough decisions. I think the hard work is done for that plant. It looks happy now and appears like it will gain momentum in the coming years. -dale -

Hopefully the smaller of the two develops a little more character like the one in full sun over time. Patience is the mark of a cycad grower. N'est pas? Nicht wahr?

Tracy replied to Tracy's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsDale, I planted that as a 2 leafer in 2018, so that represents 8 years in the ground by the end of summer. Not a speedy cycad, but I also could have given it more sun. Unfortunately my planting area for cycads was pretty limited by that point. I did manage to squeeze it in and perhaps will have to remove another nearby cycad to give it room someday. There are worse problems than trying to triage which of one's cycads will stay and which will go.

sonoranfans replied to SubTropicRay's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATE1.5 inches in june and watering restrictions are still in place. Premature yellowing, tip burn are evident in all moisture lovers. I am hiding my containers in shade, all of them. I am glad that I planted 65 palms(on 0.3 AC) including a number of clusters and multiples. Seems like the more exposed they are, the more burn they have. I still don't have the full canopy back after Milton and that means many palms are more exposed than they would be. Even one watering a week by irrigation makes a difference. If I didnt have auto irrigation even just once a week, a bunch of stuff would be dead now. One more time I am glad I didnt get a bigger yard, it forced me to plant things closer together and that has them protecting each other from the heating and drying sun. I'm sure the cactii here are loving it. -

One is flushing right now that is planted in deep shade. It’s still fairly small and has only been in the ground for about a year. These two photos were taken about a week apart. I have another one that’s bigger, it’s in full sun and has a more interesting leaf form. It’s not flushing at the moment but here are two photos of the plant. I’ll also upload photos next time it flushes, which should be soon.

We’re about 6 inches short of normal for June so far. Hot, clear sunny skies. Irrigation keeping things alive, but not overjoyed. 90s during the day and 80s at night. Some of the fancier potted palms yellowing from the invariable 24 hour heat and humidity. We are in need of some tropical storms. -

MUCH hotter tomorrow with potentially two days of 40c on Wednesday and Thursday. Clouded over here with potential for some light rain later this evening. I can hear thunderstorms in the far distance.
