It’s sulking from the planting out. A lot of newly planted palms sulk after being planted in the ground. It’s a wonderful life in a container all the water nutrients a nice cosy pot to grow in most likely in a nice microclimate as well, we come along and wack it in the ground and then the palm goes what’s going here I liked my nice comfy container. It will soon realise the freedom ahead and a better life in the ground. Dont replace that is for sure. Just look after as if was any other palm and in a year or so you won’t even notice the situation it was in after planting out. Time is a palms friend!

I have seen two from the same seed before,kerriodoxa elegans, but nothing like that at either end of the seed. Keep that on marked as special!

Plant a Bismarckia there, if you insist on archontophoenix, a nice triple planting of Alexander’s would look good! A nice baroni black petiole would seal the deal for me. And give the street a wow factor.

I'd choose A. alexandrae over cunninghamiana if Californian heat and UV is anything like where I am. Alexandrae handles it much better especially when young.

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a truly unusual biological anomaly I just ran into with my Jubaea chilensis seedlings. While going through my latest batch, I discovered a single seed that produced twin sprouts (polyembryony). Given that Jubaea is strictly a single-embryo palm species, finding a double-header like this is exceptionally rare. Both sprouts successfully pushed out their own separate, distinct root and shoot systems from the exact same nut. Instead of risking the taproots trying to separate them, I left them completely intact and potted them up together into one of my 12-inch deep tree bands to grow as a multi-trunk specimen. (The rest of the successful batch all got potted into their own individual 12-inch tree bands as well). Has anyone else ever encountered true polyembryony in Jubaea chilensis before? Would love to know just how uncommon this really is in cultivation!

It's awesome someone is bringing more Butia sp.into cultivation. Butia odorata is so successful across the south it will be great to have more variety up here in the colder palm zones. Thanks Phillipe!

I purchased a 32 inch box alfredii, it looked amazing for 3 months and now it looks perfect for Halloween. Its scary. I have decided to do what many Floridian members did and just put it out of its misery. Im considering replacing it with some tender cunninghamianas. I figure of they die it wont cost me $1000 and it wont be a pain to remove. What do you guys think? I’ve heard alexander is better in full sun. This area gets blasted all day in full sun.

It does seem to grow in spurts. It is in the.middle of one right now. It's pot right next to my barbecue means that I am continually looking at it. Growth habit for mine is straight up.

It’s mostly Ka’u that was badly affected with major structural damage similar to hurricane Iniki on Kauai but obviously not as bad. I went to Kona to visit some gardens and there’s more carnage there. See photos below. It’s Brian Lievens place.

Rating Phoenix as anything other than 0.0 suitability for Hedyscepe did make me laugh. I’d have thought San Fran is much more suitable than Sydney too, although of course nature specimens exist in both cities, Hedyscepe can grow basically out in the open unprotected in San Fran from what I’ve seen on thus forum. Without making this an AI debate, it think it can be a useful tool. There is value in summarising a large amount of data from multiple sources and compiling into concise chunks, even at the expense of some accuracy and nuance. It’s primary strength is certainly not teaching a bunch of palm nuts about the suitability of palms in their climate, but it does take simple intellectual labour tasks and make them drastically more efficient than what a human can achieve, even if you account for any added time that may be required for fact checking. Funnily enough, I think I have to agree with its rating of Melbourne suitability here. I would describe Hedyscepe as being a must grow in Melbourne for palm lovers. In my opinion it’s the most beautiful palm we can grow, but it isn’t without its challenges here. Either full sun and/or lack of supplemental irrigation would spell a quick end for them here in summer.
