Yes , I have observed this phenomenon. That is a beauty , Jim. I will say that the Rhopalostylus Baueri are pretty fast . I brought a juvenile home from @DoomsDave and this Cheesemania is gonna be a bigun’ ! Yours will probably outdo the parent palm . I don’t know if there is any advantage of climate acclimation but the volunteers seem to sprout and grow very well. Harry

A couple of others lived out of about 8 clinostigma. Definitely border line cold spots on leaves. We got down to 2 degrees celcius with two big frosts in the Clarence valley, a few smaller frosts but two that were a doozy. Mostly 6 degree lows and up to 8 to 10 average pretty mild winter. High temperatures average around 20 to 24 with a couple of 26 degree days in the sun. All in all very mild this year. Not a lot of cold wet weather, a wet start to winter but that was in the mild start of winter. Only mid July, and august was a tasting of the real winter with a few wet cold days but still a mild winter. It’s not officially over yet but a promising sign is the days are getting warmer and the afternoon cool weather around dusk is not so bad only the mornings. Cloud cover has been good for that winter blanket. Still it’s the southern polar bear chapter thay are the real cold growers iam just on holidays in my winter getting away with a lot of new varieties of palms once unthinkable of growing, plus with so many new varieties out now there is something for most growers!

Ever notice how volunteer palm seedlings grow super fast sometimes. This Rhopalostylis baueri volunteer sprouted less than a year ago at the base of an Archontophoenix in full shade and you can almost see it growing in real time. It’s 2 1/2 feet tall (76 centimeters). The one in the last photo sprouted in full all day sun about the same time. Never a burnt leaf no matter how hot it gets. Not even my 20 year old adults will tolerate direct sun here. There are ten year old A. cunnnghamiana volunteers taller than twenty year old ones that were planted as five gallon plants. Anyone else notice this kind of growth with volunteers allowed to grow where they sprouted? First three pics are same palm. Last one is the full sun one.

Thanks guys. I just have no idea what else could have caused this. We haven’t had rain since they were installed. They’re also made out of aluminum, and while I realize that can too corrode, I don’t think it’s normal that this happened already. The roofer said he will fix the spot and report to the manufacturer.

I’m envious of your climate. Clinostigma samoense I think has no cold to cool tolerance but you gotta try hey. Or it could be just that one individual. What’s the coldest you’ve gone down too and what are your average max and mins at the moment. Something positive - Spring is 2 weeks away everybody!!!!!!!!! If you own the property you live on, then plant it although they do get big, it will take more than a lifetime before it becomes a problem. Or you could donate your tree to a botanical garden in your area and that way it will live on, and be for everyone to share such a beautiful tree.

They grow great in Phoenix you can’t get much hotter and drier than that!!! Hard to get a picture in the jungle!!

Two is to many, my therapist said you never have two many palms, now iam confused @Harry’s Palms why do I listen too a therapist when there’s more good advice on palmtalk the biggest palm nut can find. Yeah, I bought them from bellamytrees.com about 2 years ago. I don't think they sell them anymore. They do seem pretty adaptable. Mine have done well indoors although they do appreciate a lot of water. I want to plant them outside eventually but I don't know if I have enough space. Here's the larger of the two plants I have. The leaves are about a foot long and deeply corrugated and spiny. Attractive bark as well, it's light brown with papery reddish bronze strips.

I must be a masochist because I saved several seedlings. My 3 single Roebeleniis are almost too tall to manage. I figured that I would just grow replacements. Now I’m not sure if I will even keep them.

Ravenea palms are so diverse and some only occurred in very limited areas like remote mountains . So many of them are threatened or endangered . There is a great video on the IPS main site about “The Lost Palm on Comoros . Worth the watch . Ravenea Moorei. Harry

Why would you want to grow sabal minor? Most of the people who grow it have few other hardy options. You could also choose a small brahea that loves your climate.

He's right, I live outside of Kansas City,in a semi rural area. Late April to early May when these dudes come out it's insane,I even had one fly in my mouth when I was a boy while riding a bike. I don't much care for them, but I don't hate them either. Anyways never seen any issues whatsoever in 40+years of living in the area. It's either a manufacturer defect or improper installation.

I just happened upon this article published this past April, documenting the rediscovery of a species of Ravenea not definitively documented since its original description in 1927. The species is Ravenea latisecta, and there have been a few possible sightings in the ensuing 99 years, although apparently virtually all of these were misidentified, most turning out to be R. robustior or R. madagascariensis,. According to the article, there are no documented specimens in cultivation. So this is apparently quite a find and gives some hope for other species that have been "hiding" while presumed extinct. Depends where you are. Moist soil might not be bad if you have consistent 100 degree days. No pics but sounds distressed. I use moon juice when I transplant trees to encourage root growing and help reduce shock.
