Devastation from SAPW in the neighborhood
Tracy replied to Tracy's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEUnfortunately it is just that San Diego comes first as they expand habitat. As the name implies, their original habitat was South America. It wasn't long ago that they were still South of the border with s few incursions into Chula Vista and Bonita. My housein Carlsbad is immediately south of Legoland, across the canyon. Legoland was still flower fields when my wife and I moved to Carlsbad and the SAPW was not even a part of our vocabulary. Time and the weevil just keep marching forward. - Today

Chrysophyllum imperiale young container plant
sbpalms replied to happypalms's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsYeah, I'm definitely considering donating them to a botanical garden or some other public garden at some point. This is definitely a tree that deserves as much space and onlookers as it can get! I've heard the same, I think a lot of species in the family Sapotaceae tend to be recalcitrant unfortunately. I've previously tried germinating another species of Chrysophyllum and didn't have any luck. Hopefully you're able to find some viable seeds! -

Archontophoenix alexandrae with two spears / stuck spear issue – why isn't the older one opening?
mcfly01 replied to mcfly01's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEA magnificent explanation; I wasn't aware of that detail regarding this type of palm—I'll pay closer attention from now on. Thanks for the photos; I can clearly see the same spears that my palm currently has! -

Habitat Photos - Northernmost Natural(?) Washingtonia Oasis
flplantguy replied to stevethegator's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEWashingtonia still reside in North America, whearas those other species do not, so its not the same argument. Native ranges shift over time, but a species that has gone exctinct in a given continent cannot have a shifting population/range. -
Chambeyronia Macrocarpa(Flamethrower) in Santa Clarita
happypalms replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEBeautiful little palm, with a nice white backdrop should highlight for all to see from the street and make em go wow! It doesn’t matter where they are, you get a big impact statement for not a lot of trouble of growing. -
For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"
Looking Glass replied to SubTropicRay's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEIt’s 96 out again. This is insanity. Not a cloud in the sky day, after day. You cannot irrigate your way out of this when the ground is sand. -

avoiding frost by planting canopy trees
Silas_Sancona replied to Josh-O's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEGrows like weeds ..even here. Seed filled pods fly ...Everywhere.. during windstorms ( See this thread: https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/80400-flyin-weeds-the-case-of-a-trash-tree-leucanea-leucocephala/ ) Seeds will pop up ..pretty much any / every-where they land. ( Gutters, cracks between pavers / concrete slabs, cracks / nooks near home foundations. Wood is weak / branches break easily during big storms. Doesn't provide much canopy during the winter and will go thru a summer semi deciduous phase in June and July. Avoid like the plague.. -
avoiding frost by planting canopy trees
Than replied to Josh-O's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEI am looking for plan B trees in case my Kigelia drops its leaves again this winter. Has anyone tried Leucaena leucocephala in zone 9b? Does it retain its leaves after mild frosts (around 29 F)? I've read it grows super fast and the roots aren't very aggressive, so I am considering it. -

Habitat Photos - Northernmost Natural(?) Washingtonia Oasis
Monocurious replied to stevethegator's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEBy this logic, would you not conclude Metasequoia or camels are currently native to Nevada, since their fossils are there? This is a large speculative jump.

Did any East Central Florida Chambeyronia survive last winter's freeze?
Eric in Orlando replied to SubTropicRay's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE2 of 3 Chambeyronia oliviformis survived at Leu Gardens but have been slow. The first leaf on both were deformed. -
Bismarck Palm: when to trim decaying fronds
sonoranfans replied to USCGGreg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI am probably 5 miles from parrish. These are easy to grow here. leave it alone, when the rains come or when we can turn the irrigation back on 2 days a week they will open. We have been in an extended drought, so not much root development has occurred. You also have very lush looking grass and that is likely bad for your bismarckia that like to grow deep roots. When you water frequently, the soil can be water logged near the top and this suffocates the deep roots. My best advice without actually seeing your palm is to space out watering intervals and water for a longer time. I would not remove a leaf that is not at least half browned out. The palm will retrieve its precious fluid(like our blood) as it gives up the leaf. Thta fluid takes time and energy to produce so overtrimming generally leads to mild setbacks and stunted growth. This is also true for overwatering(as in every 2 days in a lawn). The grass around my bismarckia is not very happy these days. But my bizzie is very happy. Bismarckia do well here with 2 days a week irrigation and once mature they mostly dont need irrigation.

Bismarck Palm: when to trim decaying fronds
Johnny Palmseed replied to USCGGreg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEYour Bismarckia looks fine. If you can leave it on without it being in your way, leave it until it’s dry. It will not damage anything by hanging down. The only thing would be if someone were mowing and tore it off. That would be worse than just pruning it. The bed is somewhat undersized and it’s understandable. The palm was probably about that big around when you planted it. Of course, a Bismarckia crown can be much larger and will likely increase its width. Until it grows tall enough for that to not interfere with lawn care, you might want to increase the size of the bed.

Chambeyronia Macrocarpa(Flamethrower) in Santa Clarita
SCVpalmenthusiast posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEMy macrocarpa is doing great in this spot and microclimate. It just opened up a new frond. Thought I would share in case anyone in the area is considering buying one. I would add Im in central Valencia, climate may differ slightly from places further north in foothills where it gets colder, like Saugus, Canyon Country. The teddy bear palm has been doing exceptionally well, it’s almost in full sun most of the day.

Devastation from SAPW in the neighborhood
SCVpalmenthusiast replied to Tracy's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThis seems to be concentrated in San Diego. I was up in your neck of the woods a few months ago to go to Legoland. I would say half of the Canary Dates were either dying or dead. However, in LA and Ventura I have not seen any dead Canary dates. I wonder if its because the climate is slightly more temperate in San Diego.

Bismarck Palm: when to trim decaying fronds
quaman58 replied to USCGGreg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI understand the "don't cut 'em off until they're dead" logic. In my area, fresh cut green leaves can invite palm weevils & other nasty pathogens. But... I'm also balancing the amount of air circulation required in a densely planted garden, as well as the aesthetics. If the palm is robustly growing, that's a leaf I'd remove if it were in my garden. But I'd also treat afterward with tree wound dressing just to cover the bases. Again, that's just me. I know there are a lot of people who might disagree. So that's my disclaimer.. -
Devastation from SAPW in the neighborhood
quaman58 replied to Tracy's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDETracy, I have a visual image of you taking off one of your flip flops and running around like a mad man attempting to murder anything that walks, crawls or flies within a 20-foot radius. Sounds exhausting. Hope you had a cold one after that. -
Texas Palms
Chester B replied to MarcusH's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSHere is a good example of what the beetles do. I thought I caught the beetle right away, but clearly I didn't. I had two beetles attack this Sabal palmetto "Lisa" about 2 weeks apart that I was able to destroy. After removing the beetles everything seemed good for about a month and then the palm started going downhill fast, and eventually spear pulled. I removed the palm and this is what I saw. This palm was about 5 feet tall. -
For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"
sonoranfans replied to SubTropicRay's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEno rain since last friday. Its dry here, the familiar hot and dry of the late spring and early summer. We are in drought but all the containment ponds have been just about full for a week. The canal is high and slow moving. A few months ago I could see the drought from the low levels of the containment ponds and canal. At my place its feast or famine on the rain and its much less frequent than I remember. We had 4 heavy rainfall days the last month or so, and ~24 totally dry days. This needs to change soon. but at least we are supposed to be getting some cloud cover in the afternoon today.

Zone 10 Palms in the Orlando Area Mega Thread
pj_orlando_z9b replied to palmsOrl's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE100%. He said he maintained and trimmed the coconut for years but knew it had internal damage. At the time he said only cocos that had a chance of recivery were the ones at Volcano Bay because of proximity near water. Meanwhile, they're recovering all over town. Purely a reactionary decision. Makes no sense because it lost the crown as well in 2018 and this was it one year later.
